Wadjet Eye Games point & click adventure games are always an insta-buy from me, I've played everyone of their games, and they have yet to disappoint me. Old Skies is no exception. It's fully voiced, and the voice acting is superb down to the last role, as always. You are Fia Quinn, a time travel agent, who travels into the past for well-paying customers. Some want to fill a gap in their knowledge, some hope to change a detail or perceived mistake in the past that has affected their whole life. Despite strict rules of the ChronoZen organization that govern time travel, these interactions with the past have sometimes unforeseen consequences, and not everyone is happy about what the past reveals. The story provides a unique take on time travel and its effects, the "ripples" that changes in the past cause in the present in subtle and not so subtle ways. The first "episode" or time travel is very straightforward, and serves as an introduction to the world, the rules and principles of time travel, and the main characters. From there on the cases become increasingly complex, and not as easy to solve. Old Skies takes itself and its protagonists seriously, and us as the players as well. What effect would it have on you if your present could change at a moment's notice? How would you cope with unintended consequences of your actions in the past? As Fia, we are confronted with these questions, and they form the overaching theme of Old Skies. There is a developer commentary that you can activate in the options, and a whole bunch of achievements, if you are looking for reasons to replay the game. My main criticism of Old Skies is that for a pont & click adventure game, there was not enough pointing & clicking. Mainly, you have to figure out what to say and do in which sequence, with the option to rewind time if you fail. There aren't many things you can interact with in the different scenes. Only in the last episode does the game utilize the whole potential of time travel for a puzzle, in my opinion the best one of the game. More of that would have been great. Despite that minor flaw I did enjoy playing Old Skies a lot, and fully recommend it.

Old Skies is another strong adventure game by Wadjet Eye, though this one might be more divisive than the others. The premise is that you're a time-traveling agent that helps clients either discover or change things in their past. This takes the form of a series of cases where things never turn out as expected. Mechanically, you resolve these cases using the standard adventure game toolset (talking to NPCs, finding and using items with the environment, etc) but there are some clever twists with time manipulation. You'll often find yourself rewinding time or jumping between timelines to discover information or items that can help you progress. It's nothing groundbreaking but it helps spice up the puzzles. The narrative is going to be the more divisive aspect of the game. Unlike Wadjet's previous games, there's no clear overarching storyline in Old Skies. Each case feels pretty standalone, even if there some connections between them. As such, this isn't really a story-driven game. It's more of a character-driven game. It's really all about the protagonist and how she evolves while dealing with the emotional, ethical and existential dilemmas imposed by timeline manipulation. In that respect, there is a clear character arc and the game's ending ties things up nicely. However, if you're expecting a traditional, story-driven experience, you'll likely feel a bit aimless as you resolve these seemingly disparate cases. I enjoyed Old Skies and respect what Wadjet was trying to do, though I would have liked to have character development and a strong, overarching storyline. As such, I'd say that Old Skies is one of my least favorite Wadjet games. That's not to say it's bad by any means, just that I prefer their other games. If you like character-driven adventure games, Old Skies is definitely worth picking up. If you need a strong overarching storyline, you may want to wait for a nice discount.

Here's my obligatory Steam Awards micro-review: while everybody is celebrating Clair Obscur as GOTY (granted, it's probably the best AAA game I've ever played), Dave Gilbert has quietly released yet another masterpiece with an intricate and insanely beautiful story. Sure, it's a small indie game almost nobody (except for point-and-click fans) has heard of, but it's my personal GOTY, and narrative-wise it's absolutely on par with Clair Obscur.

I've been playing Wadjet Eye games since Blackwell: Legacy. Every one has been a treat in a completely different way, not least because it's so rare to see a developer go from strength to strength like this. Going in, I know that all of their games will have something special that will leave me raving about them to my friends after the fact, but even so, I wasn't prepared for everything that Old Skies had to offer. So with that said, this is perhaps my favorite of Dave Gilbert's games so far. It builds on ideas and mechanics explored in past games, with a high level of polish and absolutely beautiful art. I wasn't initially sold on the move away from pixel art, but I can't argue with the results - it looks great. The voice acting is superb, with several Wadjet Eye mainstays returning, but it's Sally Beaumont as Fia who carries the game, with her initial cool professionalism revealing hidden vulnerabilities. She's by turns diplomatic, indignant, and adorably flustered. The main plot feels like a slow burn, and I felt the opening chapters were carried more on the strength of their puzzles, but once it gets going, it really is something special. Old Skies is, as with many of Gilbert's projects, a meditation on human connection, on the strange convergences that bind people together - and on the ways that someone might stand apart from the rest of humanity. For Fia, it's her role as a ChronoZen employee, walking an ever-changing timeline while leaving no footprints of her own, and it's her struggle with this that captured me. Again, this won't be anything new to people familiar with this studio's work, but the game's tone straddles a careful balance, acknowledging tragedy and impermanence without feeling as though it wallows in it. There's a rare humor and heart present throughout, a sincerity that never feels saccharine. It's a game that is honest about the uncertainty and sadness of life: everything you love could be taken away, but to live in fear of losing everything is no life at all. This game is a particular treat to longtime Wadjet Eye fans, with wonderful callbacks to past games. I was delighted to see Vicki Santini herself , as well as spotting cameo appearances from Lauren Blackwell . Gilbert's New York City has an incredible richness to it, a sense of place and presence that most games can only hope to achieve, and much of this lies in the continuity he's developed across his games. Old Skies is so cool, I wish NYC was real. Edit: updating this to add that the commentary track is, as usual, a treat, and well worth revisiting the game for. Gilbert's musings on game design and writing are a wonderful addition to his projects, and I appreciate his dedication to talking through his process. I feel kind of insane about this game and have now resorted to offering pacts to get people to play it. Send help.

And Poof. We now know each other Once again, Wadjet Eye nailed it. Old Skies is the newest game from our favourite developer, with a very interesting story about Fia Quinn, a time traveller who works at ChronoZen agency, where people who have money can alter the past to change the future. Your job is simple, yet the changes are not and will affect everything around you. Each chapter introduces a new character, but everything starts to make sense as you play. I enjoyed the story thoroughly. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3567998257 The artwork and animation were good. The cutscenes looked different, but the whole game grew on me. The soundtracks, however, were the best; they fit the atmosphere of the game nicely. The gameplay is just like any classic P&C game, but with the ability to travel back and forth in time and collect items and facts you need to proceed. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3567998428 The variety of puzzles was good; some were quite difficult, and you had to look around for numbers or rewind the time to figure them out. If you ever get stuck in the game, you can press 'H' to highlight items you can interact with, or call Nozz, your friend, for guidance through the next segment. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3568972757 Pros: +Interesting story with multiple chapters and twists. +Likable characters. +Beautiful soundtracks. +Well-done voice-over. +Good animation. +Manual + Automatic save files. +Hinting system (Calling your friend) +Steam achievements. Cons: -Artwork in cutscenes is low in quality. I liked all the characters, especially Imani; none of them were annoying, and even Elizabeth was quite interesting. I enjoyed the voice acting a lot; they all did a good job. I already miss playing the game. I highly recommend it to people who enjoy P&C games or are familiar with Wadjet Eye games.
