its true that the game is on the same level as undertale and pizza tower and everyone that says otherwise has a skill issue

Garbanzo Quest isn't just good, it's really good. It's very inspired by Super Mario World, even if it plays completely differently. It does share a lot of modern Mario DNA in being a platformer that continually builds stages around a specific concept, introduced at the beginning of the stage and escalating the difficulty of it as the stage unfolds. Difficulty is higher (on standard settings) than Super Mario World and it does reuse some gimmicks a little too much, like many stages has some kind of "stress factor" similar to the sun in Super Mario Bros 3, but instead of limiting usage to specific worlds or sections, it keeps doing them over and over again. Not that that is enough to bring my enthusiasm down. There just so many great levels and so many neat little touches - it even has a dvd bouncing ball screen saver with the main character, if you leave the game alone - it's another one of those, why aren't people talking about this? If you like 2D platformers it comes highly recommended. There is a very minor bug when you close it on Steam Deck, where the screen goes blank, but you can just hit the home/xbox button and go to library, so it's not really an issue.

Gorbanzo quest, unlike many other popular titles, is an actual indie gem in my oppinion

I like it! I don't give BS reviews even on things I want desperately to like, so note that what I'm about to say is in spite of the fact that it's a good time. It's charming, it's easy, it's funny. I recommend it. I got it on sale but I wouldn't have been hugely disappointed had I bought it at full price. That said. I saw the creator's video, titled "I Made One of the Best Indie Games of 2024 and Nobody Noticed", and it's a more even-headed and reflective video than the title implies. Zagawee's got reasons to believe Garbanzo Quest is one of the best indie games of 2024, namely that the aggregated reviews and the Steam charts were telling him so. Also that he clearly worked *really* hard on it. But it has to be said- it's not one of the best indie games of 2024. Namely because it's not remarkable. The place that Garbanzo Quest excels is in making a breezy sidescroller that is *really* easy for sidescrolling vets like myself to lose hours to. And I did. And I likely will again. But everything else it does, it does well enough. It's a funny game, it made me laugh a few times. It's not the rolling on the floor laughing troll game that, say, Benbo Quest or Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy or Untitled Goose Game is. And if it tried to be that, it would likely lose the sense of flow that the extremely (possibly overly) forgiving format lends it. The art is charming and cute. The color choices in particular are really nice on the eyes. Its adherence to Undertale Style Comedy Pixel Art is absolutely endearing and fun to spend elongated periods of time looking at, but it never wow'd me. The music isn't catchy but it's nice. I like it. I whistle it sometimes while it's playing. There is a story, but it seems entirely resigned to being a vessel for sparse comedy. I couldn't call any of these characters "characters" in the classic sense of the term, even if they tend to bring the occasional smile to my face, especially during their introductions. The gameplay is addictive. I love Mario, I love Mega Man, I love sidescrollers more than any other genre. It's nowhere close enough to hard to make me lose my sense of hypnotic flow and sit up in my seat- and it doesn't have the variety and surprise factor that, say, Kirby has that makes an easy game consistently engaging. One new concept per level is fine, but the concepts aren't that strong, typically a fairly fresh new platforming challenge modified by a chaser enemy (which does get used enough to border on annoying). Enough to keep me from getting bored, and that's important, but it's not remarkable. If this amount of variety was paired with a wow factor of some kind (story, music, art, concept, etc.), then it wouldn't just be serviceable, it would be perfect to make room for the other concepts. It's a nagging thought I couldn't get out of my head as I played. I feel like an asshole even saying it, but someone's got to because I have big hopes for the creator's next game, Super Debt (even if the VERY-mildly annoying narrative throughline of "corporations are why I hate my life" continues with it), but the same thing is going to happen if things don't change. I think the dev ought to reach for an emotional high. It doesn't have to be story. It doesn't have to be art. It doesn't have to be difficulty. It doesn't have to be stellar music. But it's gotta be something, and those are all candidates among others. Do something, one thing to start off with, moreso than any other game. Dedicate yourself to a moment in the game where you snap someone out of their stupor and say "woah". I think Zagawee is ABSOLUTELY CAPABLE OF IT. Moreso than most indie devs. There's an attention to detail in Garbanzo Quest that makes it feel like it was one of the indie greats that somehow got forgotten along the way. I hope it comes across with distinct clarity that everything I'm saying here comes from a place of admiration, not frustration. And what's more, I'm glad that I can give this game a good review with complete honesty so that it helps the metrics. But the cruel truth is that Ubisoft and EA can get away with making games that come and go like a fart and don't leave a lasting impact on anyone while still making money, but indies are both paid worse and expected to provide more. But that is the truth of things. I'm reminded of that line from "Experimental Film" by They Might Be Giants- "I already know the ending, it's the part that makes your face implode. I don't know what makes your face implode but that's the way the movie ends." If Zagawee figures out what makes someone's face implode, Super Debt's not just going to be good, it'll be great.

Extremely solid platformer, with fresh ideas. Garbanzo Quest is clearly inspired by Super Mario World, but it has its own bag of tricks. Almost every level brings something new to the table. It has pretty decent challenge throughout (but not quite precision platformer style of challenge). A lot of optional content (even though some of the secrets are bit lazily put just at the end of the levels). Overall very nice package, even if it might not rise to the very highest peaks of the genre!
