March 2025
A very well polished game aesthetically, and rich mechanically, but with many areas of improvement. I'll start with the obvious, the game looks and feels incredible. The creator really knows how to sell the animations and game-feel. The action is so satisfyingly punchy. A not-so-obvious area of strength for the game is the rich mechanics. You alternate between mech and ball forms, where the ball provides mobility and tackle damage, and the mech form provides access to your weapons and abilities. Getting the hand of seamlessly and purposefully alternating your forms, along with switching your weapons, is the start of the "getting good" part of the game that's so satisfying to achieve, which the game rewards good play with a higher combo counter that yields more coins upon defeating enemies. Coins you can use to purchase items in the shop. But herein lies my main issue with the game. It explains too little. There are two main parts that require mastery, mastering the mechanics, and mastering the builds, and the game does not provide adequate information to be able to master either of them. The game does not explain how the combo counter works; what increases it, what resets it, how long it lasts, how to maintain it, nothing. But it also does not put enough information on the various upgrades, abilities, and weapons. Something like "Increases critical hit chance", how much does it increase it? What was the chance initially? What will it be after the upgrade? How much is the Critical damage? It tells you nothing. Expand this principle to the rest of the items. I final thing I want to mention is the level design. The variety is low enough that you can spot the templates, but it still provides enough variation that you have to scour the stage to understand and make better approaches. However, whether intentional or not, the stages can create weird scenarios where you have to propel yourself in a janky ways to reach specific enemies. And sometimes, the path is so long to reach a certain place that your combo is all but gone. Might be an intentional design, but unfavorable in my point of view. Overall, the game still delivered a great experience. I was able to defeat the game on the initial run / difficulty. But the lack information barred me from delving further into higher difficulties as figuring out the intricacies of the mechanics and elements proved too troublesome. But a very enjoyable experience nonetheless.

Haven't beat it with all characters yet, but wanted to say this game is super fun. So polished and fluid to play on controller.

The movement in this game is incredibly fluid, and the graphics are gorgeous. The gameplay is pretty repetitive and the power-ups are pretty generic, but the movement is so fun that this game still stands out. Looks especially gorgeous on the Steam Deck.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that it was apparent in seconds how excellent this game was as soon as I started playing. The controls are tight, the gameplay is tight, you waste no time whatsoever getting into it. The combat system of transforming to move faster, untransforming to shoot and bashing into enemies to cancel attacks and recover ammo is smartly designed, intuitive to grasp and obviously contains a lot of depth. I will say that I do feel as though the game would have benefited from some kind of Ultrakill-style ground slam which instantly gives you a lot of downwards velocity, but it's possible I just haven't unlocked something like that yet. I also think that this game could have taken a page from Nuclear Throne and had the end of level portal also gather up all of the coins and ammo pickups left on the level into it. I'm not entirely clear on how the combo system works, but if there's no reason not to wander the stage gathering every pickup you might have missed after the portal spawns, it might as well just happen automatically to bring optimal play in line with not wasting time, i.e. faster and more fun play. This is something of a preliminary review as I haven't actually played for that long, but I feel the need to review this game because it seems criminally underrated to me. As a fan of "arcade-style" games or in general games which quickly get you to playing the actual game itself, I'm honestly kicking myself for putting off playing this for so long.

Not too shabby. The pinballing controls combined with the obstacle-rich environments make for combat that rewards creative, on-the-fly thinking. The arcade-inspired visuals/effects are on point and the constant smattering of sound effects as you roll and shoot through enemies is as thematically and satisfyingly cacophonous as you’d find in an arcade. As a rogue-like however, Go Mecha Ball is a little underwhelming. Most runs are difficult to differentiate. Upgrades throughout a run largely revolve around stat increases, even after unlocking more choices in the hub. I’m put off rogue-likes who reward progress within runs while also avoiding rogue-lite-esq permanent upgrades by putting new abilities/weapons in the pool for later runs. Keeping variety sparse early on seems like a reasonable introductory idea, but as you progress, you’re going to unlock stuff you'll never want to use that will now forever pollute your future options. Given that the game doesn’t have the healthiest variety, it's not the sort of roguelike I’d pour dozens of hours into, but I did enjoy getting to grips with the kinetic gameplay.
