One of the harder to review games I've done before, most of my frustrations with the game come from the way the narrative concludes; this review will be spoiler free, but I will discuss my emotions on the ending. The gameplay feels incredible. Golden Light captures the feeling of a classic dungeon crawler very well - constant swapping between weapons, unique enemies, and items with their effects randomized each run. Sometimes, a snail's head heals you and the meat face is a grenade. Other times, a snail's head is a grenade, and the meat face gives you bone shiver. Most of the time, the only way to know is to try it. This variety keeps the game feeling fun, and I still discover new mementos (perks/upgrades) constantly. One time, my eyes shot lasers when I squinted. Other times, I would be so fast that I would alert every enemy in the stage and die in seconds. Incredibly fun! Now onto my thoughts on the story - I was DESPERATE to reach the end of this game. The narrative gripped me extremely hard; the love-revolving plot made for an enticing adventure, and every new piece of lore made me wonder what would come next, how it all tied together. It did a great job giving me something to think about as I roamed the halls, and supplied me plenty of motivation to push onward and see the end. However, when I got to the end, all I felt was emptiness. The game left so, so, SO many questions unanswered. In a game like this, that can often be good! After all, an all-time favorite of mine is Signalis. The difference, in my opinion, is that Signalis answers the questions relevant to your character's story, and leaves questions about the world up to interpretation. It answer's the why, not the how. That way, the world remains mystical and otherworldly, but at the same time you still understand your character's past and what it was that drove them to take the actions they did. In Golden Light, I felt like I was trying to finish a puzzle with 15 of the 100 pieces. I understood that my character was searching for a girl after she got taken in the opening scene, I understood that they had a relationship based on the tone of that scene, but I hardly picked up any more clues beyond that (I can think of 2 more that I will leave out of this review for spoiler's sake). When I reached the end of the game, I was extremely excited to see some sort of explanation for what happened, who our character was and the past that led them to this moment. Something to tie the hooks all together! Instead, I felt confused and disappointed that there was no explanation to tie it all together. Is that the message of the game, perhaps? Sometimes, things happen in love and there is no way to know why or how? If so, that message is conveyed very strongly, but the fact that I have to question whether that is the message or not explains its main problem. I have too few pieces to feel satisfied with the narrative, to be sure that the not knowing was the message. Maybe I'll understand someday, maybe not. Either way, I love this game for its gameplay and story hooks. I just wish those hooks led to somewhere other than more hooks.

ive beat this game when my pc was offline so i have more hrs then it says, its not a bad game, yeah its not "amazing 10 out of ten' but i enjoyed playing it, i like the themes and the music is familiar but unnerving which i like for it, it has multiple bioms i think 6 but most people cant get past the first since they dont understand its meant to be played with caution and by paying attention, it does feel kinda clunky with controls but depends it fits the game. co op is nice, was weird it was removed and then brought back. overall id say try it if you like having to learn as you go and play carefully, like dont eat things if you dont know what they do lol.

Just an awful little game Procedural horror meets absolute nonsense in this meat-filled masterpiece. The story follows you saving your girlfriend. That's about it. She was sucked into a meat hole while you two were on a picnic. Now, you need to get her out of said meat hole. The trouble is that the meat hole is full of various dangers. The crux of the game involves moving from a central hub level (a rose meadow) to a "meat world" via an elevator. You enter the elevator and it takes you to the floor you were at previously. Your goal at each floor is to locate keys and use them to unlock subsequent elevator doors to get you deeper down the meat hole. Now, the game play really boils down to finding these keys, but as you do so you will find randomized weapons -- anything from a pipe, to a camera, to a fireman's axe -- and use these weapons to battle meat monsters. The monsters in this game can be visibly seen or can be mimics which disguise themselves as ordinary objects like books or computers. The level layout is random each time and so is the location of the keys. I had a level where the keys were basically right next to the elevator and I had another where I had to search high and low for a key. Anyway, you will be confronted by monsters in a jumpscare-like manner often and will need to do whatever it takes to either kill the monster or escape, or both. Attacking with weapons is somewhat cumbersome, so fighting may not always be the best idea. In either case, when you die (and you will die often) you will respawn back in the meadow, having lost all of your items, but retaining your level progress. The upside of dying is that you won't have to deal with the terrible things that lurk in the meat hole and you can explore the meadow in search of items that can help you. That's really the crux of the game. It offers a ton of nonsensical dialogue and lots of good freight. If you're a fan of being startled, then this is your jam. If you're interested in more psychological horror, then not a good choice. But generally, this game is a solid one that I dive in to occasionally, regret diving into, and forget about for several days only to return and repeat the process.
