This is great! A real hidden gem with the right sound design, movement, guns, humor. A cross between Quake and the build engine games. The enemy variety is exactly right, from pawns to good old 'OMG not this thing again!!'; Great horror elements. Real tension because you can't save scum yourself through the levels. No joke: I rate this higher than DUSK because how non chalant everything feels. To the developer: you undersold yourself here, this is to cheap. People like me usually don't buy 1 buck games because the pricing makes the game look bad from the beginning. Self worth is important.
Carnal's that game you play when your friend invited you over to hang out a long long time ago and he showed you some custom Quake levels he'd been working on. There's a fun kind of polished amateur feeling to it when it comes to the presentation, which really endeared me to it. It's just a bit rough around the edges, but a lot of fun, creativity and passion shines through. I even feel a bit of Duke Nukem sneaking in there too with how mundane locations like a neighborhood or a grocery store are transformed and translated into the game through a filter of dark retro style while still having a good sense of humour. As for the game itself, it's solid and very Quake-like as you can tell from the trailer and screenshots. If you've enjoyed the earlier Quakes as well as any of the more modern retro-styled games that have come out after it, then I think you'll definitely enjoy it! While Carnal may not have the polish and depth as something like DUSK, I still feel it's a worthy addition to my retro FPS collection, especially when it's as cheap as it is (and even moreso when its on sale). So yeah, give it a shot! What've you got to lose? The money you could've used to buy 2-4 gumballs at your local Blockbuster?
I all around agree with the handful of other reviews that point out that if this were a one episode and done sort of thing it would actually be better. Ep 1 is varied enough and at around 90 minutes at a dollar it would be pretty much perfect. The sight gags are funny, the enemy roster is varied, there's some actual interesting level design the further into Ep 1 you go etc. The issue is Ep 2 and 3 feel so tacked on and frankly lame that it kind of drags the experience down in retrospect. I respect this dev a lot and still recommend the game but in all honesty, play Ep 1 and pretend the game is over in my honest opinion. Recommended.
