This took a lot longer than I would have liked. GoNNER is a Run-N-Gun platformer with elements of rougelite. The gameplay offers a lot of variety in the fact that you have 3 separate slots to fill with different stuff. A mask, a gun and a backpack item. Masks supply you with health, guns shoot things, and backpacks offer special utilities from a super jump to an AOE explosion attack. All 3 of these slots have different options that provide different advantages against your enemies, although some come with drawbacks such as less health or being able to accidentally damage yourself. This is nothing new, but it's good every time you see it. Being able to customize your moveset to fit your specific playstyle is always a win. Funnily enough, the biggest problem with the game is the visuals. I'm not bashing the artstyle or anything, some elements of the game's visual style just clashes with the gameplay is all. Every time you kill an enemy, there's a short splash of color in the shape of a skull surrounding the defeated enemy. The problem with this is... it's the same color as every other enemy in the game. So if there are multiple enemies bunched up together (which happens a lot) it makes it hard to see anything going on. All you see if a bunch of color splashes and flying bullets, which is not very helpful when you are trying to bounce on top of enemies. I cannot count the amount of times I've taken stupid damage from something that I could not even see because of the game's tendency to fill the screen with so much visual noise. It gets even worse when your combo gets high enough and the colors start changing, or god forbid the combo gets high enough for the color palette to be stripped to BLACK AND WHITE!!! Where you, the enemies, death splashes, enemy bullets, YOUR bullets, and background elements are all WHITE. This game took me a month worth of attempts to finally finish, and despite how frustrating certain aspects of it were, I found myself enjoying the struggle. The visual noise isn't bad enough for me to leave a negative review, and the game managed to hold my attention enough for me to see it through. It is for that reason that I look forward to playing the sequel.

GoNNeR - A short unique 2D roguelike Another sleeper hit and a pleasant surprise during the last few days of this year! GoNNeR was sitting in my library for a long time and I was thinking to try it out for a while, due to it's unique art style and setting. What a surprise this has been! It took me around 8 hours to 100% (Mind you I have 2 hours extra on the clock from steam card farming). A roguelike at heart GoNNeR has a combo system that rewards quick thinking. The art style is phenomenal and has some REALLY VIVID colors that change depending on your combo and region. The setting is vary vague and cryptic, leaving any "story" interpretation to the player. I really liked someone's explanation on the discussions, that you are a water drop, Ikk, splashed out of the whale, Sally, which is your best and only friend. You fight demons to keep her safe up until the end... After the first few hours you can easily unlock a specific weapon-perk combo that makes going through the game an absolute joke. I very much enjoyed my time with GoNNeR and my only small wishes would be that the game somehow lasted longer and there was a bit more to the story of Ikk and Sally. Other than that, it easily earns my recommendation!
