Russian indie Half-life set in post-apocalyptic retrofuturistic USSR Still can't believe that this game was made on Unity by a single indie developer, Sergey Noskov. I'm familiar with the previous Sergey's works (personally recommend The Light Remake ) but Hail to the Rainbow looks and feels like his most ambitious project so far. It's not perfect: [*]the combat system is a bit clumsy; [*]the game levels sometimes feel too empty, minimalistic and lacking in detail (this one is okay for an indie-game actually, considering its budget and solo development); [*]the game has a lot of puzzles and doesn't give you clear hints on how to solve them: personally, i like this approach, but sometimes you spend too much time in attempts to figure out like what's going on and what the game wants from you; [*]the Silent Pines level (7-11 parts): omg, i hate it so much, especially on the hard difficulty, yes, it has strong Half-life 2 vibes, and the atmosphere is very cool, but why it feels so hard and frustrating? - there are a lot of Komar (Mosquito) enemies who chasing you and the boat's physics is awful so it flips very easily and let you die...it should be fixed for sure. BUT, everything i described above doesn't matter because you will instantly fall in love with the game thanks to its unmatched Vibe, Setting and Atmosphere! Just try a free Demo if you don't believe me! Cozy Russian winter countryside, empty post-apocalyptic cities without people covered in snow and solitude, an atmospheric OST (some tracks are inspired by Victor Tsoi and Tlou soundtrack for sure), a boy's lonely journey down the road to uncover the truth and find his lost father. One of the best vibes I've ever caught playing a video game, with no jokes! Most of the time it feels like you're playing an indie version of Half-life 2 / The Last of Us mixed with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Metro elements, sometimes the game has strong horror vibes (Silent Hill, Alien: Isolation) and, of course, Sergey was clearly inspired by Atomic Heart when creating the game - it's visible to the naked eye. Also, in some moments, HttR refers to well-known games such as Inside or Alan Wake. Playing the game, i really had this feeling like Sergey and i had the same favorite video games, and he combined them all into one great game :) Summing up, i definitely recommend to play Hail to the Rainbow to anyone who: [*]tired of AAA-blockbusters overloaded with content and grind-based missions; [*]looking for a very atmospheric single-player adventure for a few evenings to relax; [*]really like snow/winter/post-apocalyptic/USSR setting in video games (and a small tip from me: HttR is a perfect game to play on Christmas and New Year ). 7.5/10 (objective score) 9/10 (personal score based on the vibe and setting of the game) I really REALLY enjoyed it! Thank you, Sergey! Looking forward to your next game!

I've been into solo FPS games since Half-Life 1 release. To think that this game was made by a single person is BLOWING MY MIND, and they clearly know their stuff. The story, the atmosphere, the graphics, the gameplay, the level and sound design, everything is incredible and inspired by the greatests. IN A VERY GOOD WAY. I take my hat off to you, I didn't get invested in a solo FPS game like this in a while! Thank you :)

Just finished the game and must say it was really well put together having in mind it is a game made by one developer alone. Level design was simple yet very well done and the atmosphere in all places was excellent. It had some little open yet linear open areas (the ones where you use the vehicle), and then linear zones like buildings and such with some exploration and minor puzzles to solve either to advance or get collectibles, etc. I like how the game don't tell you entirely what to do yet it helps with some of the puzzles if you pay attention. The use of a drone for example, sometimes you forget about it but it is a solution to a problem if you feel like you got stuck in an area. Yes, you need to use your brain a little sometimes and I like that. Performance was really good on my end (Ryzen R9 3900X, 32GB RAM, RTX 3080Ti, installed in a NVMe 2TB SSD) playing all maxed in 4K, no DLSS with higher frame rates above 90, all fluid and not a single crash on my entire playthrough. This game was made in Unity for those that don't know. Lighting and some effects made me think it was Unreal Engine at times. I liked the story and how you find out about what happened in that world and what happened to your character. Everything was well put together in my opinion, how you go from gameplay to some cinematics and reading the things you find also help to fill the gaps. And it had some really cool little moments related to some SciFi movies you'll sure know all around. I highly recommend it, the game is slow paced have that in mind, it has some exploration bits, some minor puzzles here and there, some combat/action, and mistery, and maybe add a little bit of horror here and there too. It has some bits of HL2 (structure), Atomic Hearth (art soviet style) and even Amnesia games. Go for it, it has a good price for what it offers. ;)

I thought this game was really beautiful. To the developer, I recommend replacing all of the AI assets as I find that many people will not even touch the game due to this. This game tells a very beautiful story and delivers the experience in a well-paced package with some easy and difficult puzzles. I think the games weakest aspect is probably when you get a gun. Every combat encounter past that tends to be a very sour spot, especially with the recycler robots. I ended up playing on Hard and they had an insane amount of health, Melee felt just about impossible on them, and with their ranged attacks, it felt like a slog. Any gripes aside, I would give this game a very high rating of 9/10, and I tend to be a real bastard when it comes to my ratings. I loved this. I really really loved it. I hope the developer goes goes on to release more projects with as much passion as this one had.

The atmosphere of this game is simply amazing! It's hard to believe that it was made mainly by one person, especially when you consider the scope of the project. Hail to the Developer!
