May 2025
My Personal Opinion With Heliborne I haven't really had chance to check everything out when it comes to Heliborne as it's not the most alive game out there, but for what it's worth, there's a small community of players that are some of the most welcoming group of people I've ever met. As a new player in the Heliborne scene I was expecting this game to be, utterly horrible based on what I had read and seen around, but I feel like this game deserves more credit than it gets. For instance, This "Collection" isn't just the new Enhanced version of the game with 4 new helicopters, new graphical changes etc, nono it's got the original Heliborne in it as well. Not many dev companies out there put one price tag for both the old and the remaster, Saying that, the enhanced version is less of a remaster and more of a fresh coat of paint and I'll explain why.. Enhanced Edition I have a few problems with the enhanced edition but they're so minor. I mean, the updated graphics I dislike personally, it makes the game look... More cartoony. Where as the original Heliborne feels so much more gritty. The "updated" HUD is horrific, and doesn't quite stick to the feeling of the original but again, eh who cares, right?. And the menu is confusing, not to mention creating a match takes a bit to get used to. And you will need to since from what I have seen no one plays the enhanced version. For the good things, well, good thing. Is the sound. The sound that comes from firing a GAU or some Hydras is so satisfying. And if they put them sounds into the original I'd love it even more than I already do. Original So the original then, it feels incomplete in places. Flares sometimes don't do anything to MANPADs, where as in the enhanced it feels more consistent. The hitboxes of the AI ground troops is a bit... iffy. Sometimes you can hit them in the face with a GAU and it do nothing and the next it makes them disappear, it's safer to use rockets, honestly. And the sounds are a bit, eh. It's an old game, so you kinda just gotta live with it. Another main problem I have with both is the fact that the game has all but been abandoned by the development team. But if you can get past that, and just enjoy it for what it is. Then you'll find out that Heliborne is practically one of the best, if not the best arcade helicopter game. As of the time of writing this review, the game is on sale at UNDER £5. Which is amazing for what you get. %80 off for a game that comes with two version, countless hours of gameplay, and an infinite gameplay loop of just blowing stuff up is just incredible. I definitely do recommend this to anyone who has the same mind as me, who loves helicopters and wants a game where they can be a gunship pilot and provide close air-support to their team. And if you don't like the idea of PVP, don't worry, they got PVE, so you can demolish AI to your hearts content. 8.5/10.

Honestly the best helicopter game on the market currently. Ignoring the fact that it is one of the only. If you want to have fun in helicopters, get this game. The PVP kinda sucks to be honest, I mean helos can, but really aren't meant for air to air combat. You are trying to support your ground forces as they attack enemy LZs while the enemy does the same, ei: attacking ground targets. So it usually ends up to helos strafing side to side trying to hit each other with unguided rockets or machineguns. You can be sneaky and drop RPGs at the LZs so when the enemy lands they get popped. Later in the tier tree you get air-to-air missiles. Still, kinda sucks. PVE is the best, there's also a handful of single player campaign missions, but in reality you'll spend most of the time in PVE. Just a variety of task you accomplish with your team, with each helo having specific roles. Though rather simple, it encourages team work in order to win. Keep in mind, you'll have to grind to unlock all the helos in the tech tree, but don't worry, this grind is no where near as bad as War Thunder. The points you gain from playing matches can go to anything, so you can research weapons, news helos, or new paint jobs from either tech tree. The bad side of this game, the 'enhanced edition' is usually completely empty. The graphics really aren't that much better and really doesn't improve on anything. The game itself is also rather basic. Your thermal sighs aren't actually thermals, just turns the screen black and white. There is no cockpit view, just a very basic overlay. The graphics are mid. Lastly, the developers have largely abandoned this game, so don't expect new aircraft, maps or improvements. Despite this, it is still a fun game. You get a collection of helicopters and you can do helicopter things. No other game really offers anything on par with it. There is no steep learning curve, high grind requirement, or heavily toxic player base (War Thunder) to deal with. Just hop in your helo and have fun.
