⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I got Arma 3 expecting to play solo and shoot some bad guys in KOTH. Somehow, I ended up making friends, joined a community, and spent more time arguing about tactics than actually shooting anything. Started as a lonely solo player and somehow found a bunch of absolute idiots who I now consider friends. We’ve had epic missions, hilarious disasters, accidental teamkills, vehicles exploding for no reason, and at least one person getting lost despite having a GPS. I met people from around the world and joined an american server and did missions and trained with them; though the time difference was an issue and i couldn't continue getting up at 5am to play lol. Every min of these missions were special.
Hey kiddo, Handsome Jack here... and I just played Arma 3, and apparently someone looked at military simulators and thought, “You know what this needs? A game where it takes twelve minutes to figure out how to stand up.” Finally. A simulator for real workplace efficiency. You start the game thinking you're an elite soldier. Five minutes later you're lying face-down in a bush because you pressed the wrong button and your character apparently decided that the best response to enemy fire was to become part of the landscape. The scale is incredible, though. Huge maps, vehicles, aircraft, tanks, helicopters, boats, weapons, squads, multiplayer... You can basically conduct an entire military operation. Assuming you can figure out how to operate the damn radio. And the realism? Oh, kiddo. WAY TOO MUCH REALISM. In most shooters, you get shot and immediately regenerate behind a wall. In Arma 3, you get shot and suddenly you're having a deeply personal conversation with the ground. You spend twenty minutes walking toward an objective. You hear a gunshot. You don't know where it came from. You are dead. Fantastic. Excellent tactical planning. The campaign is ambitious, the sandbox is enormous, and the multiplayer can produce some absolutely ridiculous moments. One minute you're participating in a coordinated military assault, the next your helicopter pilot has crashed into a tree and everyone is screaming over the radio. That's not a bug. That's team-building. And the modding community? Absolutely insane. You can basically turn this game into whatever you want. More weapons, new maps, new factions, new scenarios, completely ridiculous experiments... At this point, Arma 3 isn't a game. It's a military-themed operating system. The biggest problem is also the biggest strength: the complexity. There is a LOT to learn. Controls, equipment, movement, communication, vehicles, tactics... I spent more time learning how to play than some games take to finish. But when everything finally clicks? Oh. OH, KIDDO. You're moving with your squad, covering sectors, communicating over the radio, coordinating an attack, calling in support, and watching your entire plan actually work. You feel like a military genius. Then your squad leader tells you to move left and you accidentally walk into a mine. Promotion denied. So yeah, Arma 3 is absolutely not for everyone. But if you want a game that lets you experience military operations with an absurd level of freedom and complexity, it's hard to beat. 9/10, kiddo. Incredible sandbox, insane realism, endless possibilities, and enough controls to qualify as a second keyboard. I'd give it a 10, but apparently I have to spend twenty minutes configuring my radio before I can tell my team that I'm being shot. That's unacceptable communication infrastructure. Hyperion would have solved this years ago. We'd just install a button labeled: “SHOOT THAT GUY.” Problem solved.
Let's brake it down for those who really wants to buy this game in 2026 or later in the future (Even after ARMA 4 release). This game is truly not for everyone - It takes several hours if not hundreds just to get into all of the controls and understanding of how game works. And also - If you plan to buy it without any DLC - It's not entirely problematic, you have a thousands of mods released by the community on the workshop almost everyday, but for some you definitely have to buy even the simplest but Official (from Helicopters and Jets to Apex) and Creators DLCs developed by the fans for the fans and published under approval of Bohemia Interactive. To Simplify - Before you buy, you have to know what you're signing up for and which each type of purchased experience (Pure Vanilla, Some DLC or all Major if not all of them) Vanilla Only - If you bought this game (and most realistically on sales) without any DLCs than you are either trying it to see if you can get into it and will you like it or not or you just want to play the completely modded experience for only 4 dollars It has only the basics - East Wind Campaign, Tutorials and showcases (Including Art of War and Zeus which were added for free to this game) and a workshop with hundreds of thousands of mods published daily or almost daily. You Bought the Ultimate Version (With or Without APEX) - If you bought an Ultimate version with basic yet most important DLCs (Even including APEX) you've just opened for yourself larger possibilities for Multiplayer - New verity of modes and ability to join them, New "Old Man" Campaign and with them your mod collection feels way more complete (I recommend this type of purchase for bigger choice and decision making in building your own scenarios or unlock more possibilities in Multiplayer) If you bought this configuration you really know what you are doing and what you are going for. Creators DLC: Most Important Ones: MAC V S.O.G. Campaign - Basically all of Mods and Vietnam content in one DLC. If you think RS2V or HLL Vietnam is too simple for you and you wish for more "Tactical" & "Realistic" approach - Buy this DLC and ask no more Western Sahara - Great DLC for those who into Middle Easter esthetics but also want to buy a Creator DLC for cheaper + Quite a number of mods require this DLC (Just Like S.O.G. Required by all of Vietnam mods and scenarios earlier). So this one also worth buying for your better ARMA experience Reaction and Expeditionary Mods - For those who rather prefer Search and Rescue instead of All out warfare + required by majority of DLC based mods. Others are on your preference and ratings of the community. Special P.s: You bought base game with monthly subscription or you want to try to: Son..... You better not....
It's a tricky game to get into as a beginner as there are a bunch of keybinds, gamemodes, and mechanics, and it's quite unforgiving. However if you find a good server or a community that caters to what you want out of the game, you get hundreds of hours of fun. Extremely large collection of mods, from guns, vehicles, to entire handcrafted maps. Even for a game over a decade old it still looks pretty good with settings on high, and there's a bunch of realism to it in terms of bullet ballistics and flight models. Until Arma 4 comes out I will still recommend this as a purchase, especially when it's on Steam sale.
After more than 4,000 hours in Arma 3, I think it's safe to say this game has earned its place as one of my all-time favourites. Arma 3 isn't a game you can judge after a few hours. It's a military sandbox that rewards patience, teamwork and learning. The scale of the battles, the freedom to approach missions in different ways, and the endless amount of community-made content mean there's always something new to experience. For me, the biggest reason to keep coming back is the online team play. There's nothing quite like being part of a well-organised squad where communication, coordination and planning all come together. Whether it's a small co-op mission or a large-scale operation with dozens of players, the moments you create with your teammates are unforgettable. The modding community deserves huge credit too. Mods have kept the game feeling fresh for years and have added an incredible amount of content and realism. It's not perfect—there's definitely a learning curve, and the occasional bug or clunky moment is part of the Arma experience—but if you're willing to invest the time, few games offer this level of immersion and teamwork. 4,000+ hours played, and I still find myself coming back for "just one more mission." That probably says everything.
