Kids these days, they all play Minecraft and Fortnite. But back in my day, we played... HERETIC and HEXEN! Two truly wholesome video games for children of all ages. This is another great addition by Nightdive to bring these '90s shooters back from the dead. Please support them! (I didn't support them because they gave them to me for free)
The best part about revisiting old games in remasters, such as this and others Nightdive puts out, is it just goes to show how much the majority of modern AAA games have stagnated or even regressed over the years. To think Heretic + Hexen has more soul, personality and meaningful content than most of the tripe we've been seeing in recent years is truly a testament to how these classic bangers still stand the test of time, and in other ways have gotten even better with age. Needless to say Heretic and Hexen are absolute classics, I greatly enjoy Heretic as it's essentially Doom with that late 80s dark fantasy look and feel and with some extra new mechanics and aspects that Doom never really had like the inventory items. Heretic alone is already worth the asking price. Punchy combat, unique enemy types, creative weapons, labyrinthine levels and an awesome style made it a joy to revisit after all these years. But if you ask me I'd say the real gold in my opinion has got to be Hexen because it went Beyond Heretic in what it set out to achieve; huge hub worlds to explore, complex multi-level puzzles, three classes that play completely different from one another and refining what Heretic introduced to FPS games back then. Hexen is essentially what you get if someone designed a dungeon crawler game in the vain of King's Field but designed through the lense of a boomer shooter; it's obtuse, it's cryptic, it's cruel and it feels nothing but indifference towards you. When you try to play Hexen like a typical boomer shooter, it was punish you and leave you lost in its maze, but understand what it wants from you and it becomes incredibly rewarding when you figure it all out. A violent brain teaser of a game with an amazing atmosphere for sure and one I deeply respect and have come to fall in love with, despite its frustrations. Both coming with their old expansions (Shadow of the Serpent Riders for Heretic and Deathkings of the Dark Citadel for Hexen) and both getting a brand new official expansion each gave me so much to chew on the last few weeks, totalling my playtime to roughly 35 hours. And even then I've yet to fully complete the game as I have one final multiplayer achievement to obtain. On top of all of that, the game has a built-in mod browser to easily download and play a ton of community made level and modifiers, which I am definitely excited to dig into at some point and perhaps even contribute a creation or two of my own one day, because I am feeling inspired to crack open Ultimate Doom Builder to make some Heretic and Hexen stuff. On top of all that Nightdive also included a number of game modifiers to improve and enhance on the game's original shortcomings, like bolstering the number of textures for Heretic to make every episode feel more unique and making certain enemies in Hexen less of a pain to put down. All of these are completely optional and easy to enable or disable what you do and don't want, catering to players who want a more refined experience and those who want the raw original feel. It also comes with map markers toggled on by default, which is exceptionally handy in Hexen for players who get lost and stuck very easily, and while I didn't really need them in most of what Heretic + Hexen had to offer, I definitely made good use of them in Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur due to how huge, dense and complex (and fantastic) that expansion is. So there is no reason to feel intimidated by Hexen anymore. And let's also not forget the amazing remake of the soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult, who has been making headbanger after headbanger for over a decade now and he did not fail at all in his contributions here. His works here are much more faithful to the original game's score compared to his Doom + Doom 2 compositions (though I am still really fond of his reimagined take on those classic songs) while upping the bombast and a greater variety of instruments. It does change the atmosphere somewhat and it might be too much for people who are deeply in love with the original MIDI soundtrack, but man it absolutely BANGS. It sounds quintessential Hulshult and Heretic at the same time, which is exactly what I wanted from this remade soundtrack. And the best part is you can always re-enable to original MIDI tracks if you prefer that, personally I love both. And in classic Nightdive fashion, they included a variety of local and online multiplayer options where even 16 players can play together in co-op, on top of having up to 8 player splitscreen, which is absolutely nuts and I love it. So there's no reason not to play through this with a group of friends for your next Heretic replay or even to put your heads together trying to figure out Hexen for your first time through. There so many ways to play for all kinds of players. And let's not forget the vault; a wonderful thing Nightdive have been doing in their most recent remasters where they show off tons of cool trivia and assets that didn't make the final cut. That stuff is a real joy to read through and I dearly hope this feature keeps making it into every Nightdive port going forward. So what are you waiting for? This whole package is absolutely exceptional and well worth the full asking price, whether you're a returning player or someone who loves the modern renaissance of boomer shooters and getting into this series for the first time, do yourself a favour a pick it up asap. And id, Bethesda and Nightdive please do Heretic 2 + Hexen 2 at some point, PLEASE!
I'm glad they've done this, but damn... I was way more tolerant of games when I was a lad... no wonder I found this confusing to navigate, because it's genuinely very difficult to navigate!! Absolutely amazing that they've kept such an old game alive, love the vibe of what they've done here, and done it well. We were able to knock up a co-op within minutes, one of us on Linux, the rest windows, no problem, all good. This friends, is a slice of what games used to be back in the 90's and it was utter wonderland to us back then, my teenage self was lost in this for months, I'm glad I got to go back for a bit, thank you.
