Returning to the colony after 25 years surely was a blast. This game is so beautiful and once i was nearing the end i got a little sad, knowing the journey will end soon. Exploring the world and finding the little secrets at almost every corner was so refreshing compared to those gigantic empty open world games we get fed since years. The difficulty was insane and even though i died like a million times it wasnt frustrating but just challenging. i really hope the devs will do Gothic 2. Though the game is great it wasnt perfect. I had a few crashes and bugs with NPC behavior (like Milten and Saturas going into a duel after the "charging" of you know what). Also the lockpicking wasnt my thing. I think its a cool system and if you are into solving rubic cubes its definitly something you would enjoy but i am just to stupid for this one. While i was able to pick easy locks withinh 5-10minutes with a couple of reloads there is no way i could ever pick a lock that has 25+ steps. Luckily there is an online tool for that (google gothic remake lockbreaker). The "inflation"-system for trades also didnt serve its purpose and IMO wasnt a good design choice. I understand that this is to prevent the player from getting "to rich" but all it did was to force me to just sell all the crap weapons i didnt need (especially from Goblins, Orcs and Skelletons) amd rings/amulets still letting me finish with like 10k in the Bank while i simply couldnt get rid of hunting tophies at all. Since their value would drop to "0" after selling a few, there was no point in selling them at all. So i kinda wasted learningthose early on, cause i fishiehd the game with probably around 1.000 tophies (teeth, claws, pelts, etc.) I can see the Devs love Gothic as much as i do and i am grateful for their work and the opportunity to play this game again cause i simply cant get myself to play the OG to its poor aging.
An extraordinary rare achievement for a remake, to recreate an experience fully while also expanding on it without changing its vision. Fully recommend to anyone who liked the original game and a cautious recommendation for anyone else, if you have the patience for eurojank. The game is like salty licorice. It's unusual, you need to get used to it, but you will not find anything quite like it and if you enjoy it, you will crave more. There is simply no substitute. I was very worried about the remake but I am blown away by how much I enjoy the it. Everything I liked about Gothic 1 is still there, the atmosphere, the immersion, the small but densely packed and vertical open world, the unique flavor of the original has been reimagined very successfully. That alone is something I would celebrate but what makes this experience really worth it is the expanded content, slight rewrites of the story and better fleshed out characters. The devs and writers seem to really understand the original game and had enough respect for it to fix several minor hiccups with the original story beats, and expand content without damaging the old atmosphere. They instead expanded massively in areas where the original had ideas that could not come to fruition. Underwater exploration, climbing, unused gaps in the original map, underutilized characters, monster ecology, abandoned quest concepts from the original. The Devs used all that to put a bunch of new interesting content in the game that sits neatly alongside the original, never gets in the way, never feels out of place, always enhances the original content. The degree to which they made all these pieces fit together is the sign of a development team truly understanding what made this 25 year old game tick. They were so committed to the bit, they even put in a bunch of bugs :D None of them were game breaking for me, some were very amusing in a typical eurojanky way but you should quicksave often, so you can laugh and try again if your allied Quest NPC suddenly switches sides mid combat because you looked at him the wrong way. I also played on Linux. Had to lower the graphics ever so slightly to get my preferred high FPS but the game ran stable without any issues.
I finished OG Gothic 1 probably around 31 times since it was released in 2001. I highly recommend the remake to anyone who loves the original Gothic or anyone who does not like handholding in RPGs. It feels like OG Gothic, and it basically plays like OG Gothic — just a better version of it in general. I really enjoy every type of combat, and the world and graphics are just gorgeous, yet still have that dark G1 atmosphere. HIGHLY RECOMMEND 10/10
For non Gothic fans: This game is designed to suck at the beginning and get better and better as you play. Most games start you off weak and throw weak enemies at you, increasing their level as you get better. This one starts with you so weak that it's frustrating but once you do get better and are able to defeat those monsters or NPCs that made your life hell, it's so much more rewarding. In 2001 I quit the original Gothic 1 after less than one hour of playing, but after reading a review in a magazine that told me exactly what I'm telling you now I tried it again, managed to get past the ugly begining and it's been my all time favorite game until Witcher 3 was released. Also, don't bother trying to master it's fighting system, bother getting better weapons and investing skills in it as this will change how you fight and how efficient it is. At the end of the day, it's a classic RPG, not an action game. For the Gothic fans: The best thing I can say about this game is that it has everything you remember fondly from the original, with improved graphics, UX and even fighting system. There isn't one element that I can think is a downgrade from the original, maybe the lockpicking system but that's debatable, it gets better as you get used to it and put 10LP into it. The only negative thing I can say about the game, from a Gothic fan perspective, is that maybe it's too much the same as the original. There's maybe less than 10% of new content, some new quests and some twists to the old ones, but most are exactly the same but with improved dialogue. So from the story and quest perspective, it feels like you're playing a modded version of the original. If you were itching for replaying the original, then this game is a no brainer, it's that but so much better. If you played it so many times that you didn't really feel like trying it once more time, you'll probably only half enjoy this game. Disclaimer: I've had 14.5 hours put into this game so far, and I completed the original about 8-10 times over the years, most recently in 2021.
One of the best remakes of all time. Exemplary. It's hard to believe that it exists, but I'm playing it and can't stop. Only at Chapter 2 and already can't wait for Gothic II Remake in the same style. It's just that good. A must play for any RPG and especially any Gothic fan.
