Higurashi When They Cry Hou - Ch.1 Onikakushi This is the first visual novel released by 07th Expansion, written by Ryukishi07. This consists of 4 question arcs and 4 answer arcs, along with a few bonus chapters, and features absolutely zero gameplay. If you need gameplay, then I would suggest skipping this, but you would be doing yourself a disservice, as this is an absolute gem of a story that is greatly improved by the strengths of the VN medium, with appropriate music and voice acting that truly bring out the mood of each scene. However, this is only if you use the 07th Mod, which gives you the option of using the much better PS3 visuals (a significant improvement over this release's photos-with-a-filter). Even as someone who normally likes a silent protagonist, I found the incredible voice acting massively enhances the experience. The story begins with you playing Keiichi, the transfer student to a rural village. You quickly become friends with Rena, Mion, Rika, and Satoko, and enjoy the silly slice-of-life moments with your new buddies at the after-school club. Alongside these lighthearted moments, we gradually learn more about the town and its dark history. However, all seems relatively normal until Keiichi goes to the Watanagashi festival, and suddenly people start turning up dead or go missing, causing all of his friends to act extremely suspicious. The best part of this VN is how it keeps you on your toes, constantly wondering what will happen next. You really feel Keiichi's growing paranoia as the game progresses. I'm looking forward to getting through all of the question arcs so I can finally discover what on earth was going on in this chapter's answer arc.

Okay... NOW I see why my review count was so much lower than my completed game count... I didn't review any of the Higurashi series... Well... here it is... I got this because I watched the anime. I do NOT generally like horror... but I loved the anime, so I wanted to play the games.... and.... well.... they're not really games. They're completely linear. You just click through them. But they're pretty entertaining all the same. So sure. Get it... experience the plot firsthand. MIGHT be better to just watch the anime and be done with it though. It does kinda present things better.

The "getting to know all the characters" part of the game dragged on a bit too long, but once things got going, they REALLY got going. I was convinced to pick up the bundle. Looks like I have a new horror series to get into!

Came for the "horror", stayed for the plot. The first chapter is free, but I'd pay for it. Read it. The true mystery of it all still keeps me up at night. Probably one of my favorite VNs of all time. I don't really have more words, just a heck of a lot of feelings. I really should watch the anime at some point, eh? ♥

As someone who's seen all the anime like 10+ years ago, it's still just a good as I remember. The games give you the full experience and so this is a must play for newcomers and fans alike!
