I'm not such a big fan of different timelines in anime, but when applied to horror, I perceive it differently. I do want to see how many possible paths exist and what possible outcomes there could be, because it helps me understand the story of Hinamizawa better.

Most elements bar the story and plot are common with the other Higurashi iterations. The focus is on the story itself, which is very well written, and artwork is secondary to the novel. Great music and sound effects that fits in with the story at hand. No CGs, no voice acting, rough backgrounds, and the sprites of the characters themselves appear less often then just big plain wall of texts, often with not even background at all. As for the story itself, this is where the novel excels at. Great story telling, deep character and story development that gets progressively darker and thrilling as it progresses. Like the first half of the series, some story content requires reading the sequels in order to be understood. Overall, a great novel, if for the story alone. Rating: 7/10.

I honestly can't recommend this highly enough. I've already read it on youtube but I want to buy it all to support the writer because it's just that good. Seriously. Check out the first chapter for free. If you're at all interested after that, you're in for a hell of a ride! I introduced it to my friend who doesn't even like visual novels and now he loves it, too. I'd recommend it even if you've seen one or both of the animes since there is waaaay more story in this than in either adaptation.

Wow, this chapter was actually SO much better than 'Onikakushi'. The first chapter was really tedious at times with its overblowing slice-of-life sequences (they are essentical for characters' development and buidling up the anticipation, that's for sure, but the author was REALLY demoned away in them a lot, making the length way too big or adding several SOL sequences back-to-back). So in order to get to the best part you had to literally fight your way through until the second half of it. But the second chapter cut short the majority of lengthy SOL scenes as it considered that you were already introduced to the characters well enough, and finally focused on the environment and the village lore instead, and that's where the novel truly started to shine. The SOL scenes became much more balanced and adequate, and when the heat starts building up, it doesn't stop until the end which made reading this chapter after Watanagashi night one of the best horror experiences I've ever had. The mystery was smartly convoluted and it tries to fool you until the very end. The madness and cold logic of an isolated village with its ancient not-very-kind history gets twisted just like the twin sisters the mysteries (and miseries) of which you are still about to unfold. I also loved how this chapter showed the emotional side of the horror going on, and the writing was excellent in here. The only problem is (if it's a problem at all though), is that Keiichi is still dumb as a brick but that's okay. He's just a boy after all, ke ke ke. I hope that the next protagonist(s) will be a little bit smarter...
