Normally, a game has to have Very Positive or Overwhelmingly Positive overall feedback before I will bother to try it. Himegashima Island is by Fushidaratei, the same people behind False Myth which is one of my favorite games. So, despite less than optimal reviews, I decided to give Himegashima Island a try. The description of Himegashima Island on the Kagura Games website says, “Enjoy fishing, bug fighting, secret base building, treasure hunting and more in this slow-life RPG.” I was unfamiliar with the term: slow-life RPG. But, yeah… be prepared for that. False Myth has incredible gameplay. This game is really just go from place to place. It’s a resource management game. You gather points for fishing or collecting bugs or doing chores. One of the resources is rinnel. It’s this blue crystal needed by this robot called Jizou. This robot and these crystals were also part of the game False Myth, connecting the two games in the same universe. I believe that Jizou is a play on the Jizo statue, which is an enlightened spiritual helper in Japanese Buddhism, who serves as the guardian of children, travelers, and souls in the underworld. This robot appears in silhouette in the Fushidaratei logo and appears to be a company mascot. The other resources are bugs, fish, money and goodwill. Time is also a resource. The game has a short four day week and one of those is a weekend day where you can’t do much of anything except fish. The clock is constantly ticking so there is this pressure to get things done. It’s a pressure that shouldn’t be there. If you decide to play the game, ignore any sense of urgency that you might feel and take your time. No, really. You aren’t meant to accomplish much in each day. This is meant to be a casual experience. At first, I didn’t think that I was going to like this game. It takes a while to get used to its rhythm. The mini games aren’t really “games” at all, since the only requirement from the player is just to show up and click a button. That said, the story, the characters, and the wonderful pixel art animations that I loved in False Myth are all here. The store page says that a controller is not supported, but I played using my controller just fine. I enjoyed my time with Himegashima Island and I’m going to keep my eyes open for future games from Fushidaratei. There are references to dimensional travel to a science fiction world in both Himegashima Island and False Myth, but they are just hints. I suspect an eventual dimension hopping sci-fi adventure game from the developer and I’m really looking forward to it. This one is a 9 out of 10 for me.
This is basically what I expected "Natsu no Sagashimono" to be: a wholesome, laidback and emotionally intriguing summer experience. It's hard for me to translate the pure vibes I've experienced into text on a screen, but the best description I can think of is cozy. That is not to say that the characters are one-note and shallow, they most certainly aren't. The game doesn't treat you like some braindead gooner, instead it respects your time and attention by rewarding you with fleshed out dialogue, layered characters and subtle subtext for the players to pick up on. That said, I can understand the artstyle isn't for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed the little animation details. Many users have also reported bugs, even though I've encountered only 1 crash throughout my entire 24 hour run. Still I'm more than willing to recommend this game because of how it subverted my expectations, definitely worth your time and money.
