Ideology in Friction is a mature, story-driven RPG that places narrative choice and ideological conflict at the center of its design, offering an experience that is far more concerned with consequences than heroics. Developed by ONEONE1 and published by Kagura Games, the title blends classic RPGMaker structure with branching storytelling, voiced characters, and adult themes to create a world where personal beliefs, political pressure, and survival are constantly at odds. Rather than presenting a simple tale of good versus evil, the game leans into moral ambiguity and asks the player to navigate a landscape where every path comes with compromises. The story is set in the Kingdom of Viktor, a nation struggling with both external threats and internal fractures. You follow two young knight cadets, Clacier and Annette, who have survived the brutal training of the Royal Knight Academy and are on the cusp of becoming full-fledged protectors of the realm. Their initial goal is straightforward: defend the kingdom from mysterious monsters that have begun to appear across the land. However, as casualties mount and the political machinery behind the knights reveals itself, the two protagonists are gradually pulled toward opposing philosophies. This ideological split is the backbone of the narrative, transforming what begins as a traditional fantasy setup into a study of belief systems under pressure. Gameplay follows a familiar RPG structure, but with several quality-of-life choices that keep the pacing flexible. Exploration is handled in top-down fashion, with enemies visible on the map rather than appearing through random encounters. Players can choose to engage in combat or dash past foes, allowing them to control the balance between grinding and narrative progression. Combat itself is one-on-one and animated, prioritizing clarity and spectacle over complex tactics. While mechanically simple, battles serve as narrative checkpoints as much as gameplay challenges, often tying directly into story outcomes and character development. Choice and consequence are where Ideology in Friction truly distinguishes itself. Player decisions influence Clacier’s ideological alignment, relationships, and eventual fate. These choices are not always clearly labeled as good or bad, and outcomes frequently reflect unintended consequences rather than immediate rewards. Some paths emphasize honor and restraint, while others encourage pragmatism or moral compromise in the face of overwhelming threats. Multiple endings reinforce this structure, giving weight to long-term decisions and encouraging replay for players curious about alternative routes through the story. Character presentation is notably strong for an RPGMaker title. Main characters are fully voiced in Japanese during key scenes and combat, adding emotional texture to interactions and helping sell moments of tension or vulnerability. Supporting characters are varied and often memorable, ranging from fellow knights and instructors to civilians caught in the fallout of ideological conflict. The amount of event artwork and animated combat sequences further elevates the presentation, making the world feel more dynamic than its engine might suggest. Adult content is a significant and explicit component of the experience. Ideology in Friction includes strong language, violence, sexual themes, and partial nudity, all of which are woven directly into the narrative rather than treated as optional side material. These elements are used to explore power, desire, and degradation within the game’s world, reinforcing its darker tone. While this content will appeal to its intended audience, it also firmly places the game within a niche, and players uncomfortable with mature themes may find it off-putting despite the strength of the underlying story. Mechanically, the game does not aim for deep or demanding combat systems. Character progression and battle strategy are relatively straightforward, and most of the challenge comes from narrative decisions rather than mechanical mastery. For some players, this simplicity may feel limiting, especially if they are looking for complex builds or tactical depth. However, the focus on storytelling makes this a deliberate trade-off, ensuring that gameplay supports the narrative rather than overshadowing it. Overall, Ideology in Friction is an ambitious adult RPG that succeeds through its commitment to choice-driven storytelling and moral complexity. Its greatest strengths lie in how it frames conflict not just as something to overcome, but as something that shapes identity, relationships, and belief. While its combat systems are modest and its mature content narrows its audience, players who value narrative depth, branching paths, and character-focused drama will find a rich and engaging experience. It stands as a strong example of how RPGMaker games can push beyond formula and use familiar tools to tell stories that are challenging, uncomfortable, and deeply personal. Rating: 8/10

Ambitious work, Worth its money if you want to jork it to a real story. Two points the dev should have really gone over again though: -One villain is so horrifically evil that it loops back into a comedy -RAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH major dearth of Clacier and Annette scissoring. One scene isn't enough. I could work with Merlins magic too.

I enjoyed playing this game. I was really surprised by the amount of work behind it. It's way above the usual RPGM H-game in terms of quality. The art and animations in and out of combat are good, the girls are hot and are voiced. The maps are good looking, the soundtrack is custom made and not the default RPGM music. There are multiple different outcomes to your actions that will change the story. The gradual corruption of Clacier was hot, and allowing the player to control Annette was a great addition to the game. ( •̀ ω •́ ) The game is great overall, but there are many things that I didn't like. The story started out strong, and the more it went on, the weaker it got, and I eventually started not caring about it. The story dialogues and re-used cut-scenes can sometimes be a bit too much. The combat in this game is also really easy. There is no real challenge in the normal mode, I'm not sure if I ever used a healing spell or healing items. Too much rapey kink for my taste. Annette's corruption level is tied to Clacier, so you can't gradually corrupt her while you are playing her. When you finish the game, you get an unlock all scenes button, but it only unlocks the story scenes, it doesn't unlock all the NPC scenes you missed. Also, there are no preview images in the gallery, so you will have a hard time finding the scene you liked ૮(˶ㅠ︿ㅠ)ა
