To fix the launch issues, search up "B.A.T. v4.0 "RED CORE" - The World At War pack". Scroll down on the page at sas1946.com until you reach "Here is an example of a good universal CONF.ini;" Copy this code. Then open the file "conf.ini" in your game directory (by default, C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\IL 2 Sturmovik 1946 Replace the contents of this config with what you copied. If you need to change the resolution from 1920x1080, edit the width and height lines. If you open the game now, it will go off the screen due to scaling issues. Right click IL2FB.exe, choose compatibility, change high DPI settings, and check the box called "Override high DPI scaling behavior" at the bottom. The game is now ready to play. This game plays best when downgraded to version 4.12.2. Right click in your steam library, choose betas, 4.12.2. Then go and search up "SAS Modact 5.3 for IL-2 4.12.2m". Download "Modact 5.3x", "AI Flyables Pack 5.3x", and "SAS Featured JSGME Optional Mods for Modact 5.3x", and "SAS Featured JSGME Optional Mods Patches". Install them each into your game folder in order. Then launch JGSME in your game folder to activate the additional mods. This will add quality of life changes, like full detail skins, animation fixes, and most importantly, allow you to use all aircraft via the AI flyables mod, such as heavy bombers like the B29. These aircraft have detailed interior models and can be flown with friends in the gunners positions in coop.

This Game is the OG and still holds up fligthsim and for those who cant play it here is the fix: Set your Screen Icons to 100% not less not more and then lunch as admin works for me and slowly increasse Resulution. Or for the more easy fix switch to linux.(Arch Linux for example with Cashyos) For help Just ask here:

IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 is a legendary flight simulator with an incredible level of realism for its time. The game still holds up in terms of atmosphere and content, but the controls are where many players—especially newcomers—struggle. Unlike modern titles such as War Thunder, which allow easier keyboard input and offer a balance between realism and accessibility, IL-2 requires far more precise control mapping. Flying with just a keyboard feels clunky and unnatural, since aircraft demand smooth movements rather than rigid key presses. This pushes players toward buying a joystick or controller, which unfortunately can be expensive. While that makes sense for hardcore flight sim fans, it creates a steep barrier for casual players who just want to experience classic dogfights without investing in extra hardware. If the controls were modernized or given an option similar to War Thunder’s simplified scheme, IL-2 would become far more approachable while still keeping its simulation depth. As it stands, the game shines historically and technically, but accessibility suffers heavily for those without proper flight gear. Verdict: Amazing sim for purists, but very unfriendly to keyboard-only pilots.
