Katamari Damacy is a game about making your circle bigger. You roll around the titular katamari, gathering all manner of things to increase its radius; this is helpfully displayed in the top-left, along with a circle that shows your target size. Only items whose size is less than or equal to your katamari's radius can be rolled up, so optimizing your route through a level such that you're always just large enough to roll up your targets can be a surprisingly complex puzzle. Katamari Damacy is a game about making your circle bigger. As you play, you'll notice that things on Earth are arranged in a bizzare configuration. Dice dance around a table. Doors are placed in the middle of the road like dominoes. When you examine closer, or perhaps from farther away, you notice the artistry at play. The whimsy. The personality. The humor. This is not merely an interactive "travelling salesman" challenge. There is so much soul in this game. Katamari Damacy is a game about making your circle bigger. The civilization you roll around, that you roll up, was not built by fools. But few to notice or care when you roll up the smaller ones around them. Only when you threaten them directly do they act. Why do they resist? Are they scared? Are they comfortable with the idea of others being lumped together in an amorphous group of arbitrary labeling, but insistent - for whatever reason - that they are wholly unique and thus should be considered separate from any categorization? Katamari Damacy is a game about making your circle bigger. You're unlikely to complete this game without help from those who have completed it before. A spreadsheet - several years old, laboriously filled out by someone you will never meet - becomes your checklist. You watch a youtube video by a kind soul who sought to guide others. The title of the Youtube video is in English, but you notice they play the game in a European language you're unfamiliar with. These are the giants whose shoulders you stand on as you gather the final items. This is not the only game for which guides are very helpful. The work of those kind people is all too easy to take for granted. Katamari Damacy is a game about making your circle bigger. The ending of this game is a meditation on groups. On categories. On boundaries. As you roll, you realize that we all have our own circles. There are things in our circle, and there are things outside our circle. What Katamari Damacy shows us is that these circles can expand. It shows us that we make ourselves bigger by joining together with others, and ultimately, we are all lumped in together with everyone else, whether we'd like to be or not. Katamari Damacy is a game about making your circle bigger.

Katamari Damacy REROLL turned out to be one of the most fun experiences I’ve had this year. I had never played anything from the franchise before, but on a friend’s recommendation I decided to give it a try, and I don’t regret it. The game combines catchy, creative, and beautifully composed music with simple yet extremely enjoyable gameplay, resulting in something unique and engaging.

"I don't use drugs at all. I don't drink, please don't worry about me." - Keita Takahashi, Katamari Damacy director And yet, I kinda do. Katamari Damacy is the embodiment of the slogan "built different". In my mind, it released at the peak of the Gamecube era where game formulas weren't quite pinned down yet. And it revels in this. Nearly everything about this game is distinct from other titles I've recently played in a colorful and playful display. You play as the prince of the cosmos, rebuilding constellations after your father (the King) has a destructive all-night bender and accidentally destroys all the stars in the night sky. A side narrative of a Japanese family observes the stars repopulating the sky, following the mysterious progress of the little prince, and reminds us that The King might not be the most extra personality in the universe. The Pros: [*]What a weird game. Like, just so out there. I love it. It's so different. It's an awkward pre-teen that is finding their identity and doesn't quite know what it's doing yet and is going all in on something you've never seen before. Though it could also be an unabashed 30-year old who knows exactly what they want in life and are the kind of person that make a workplace interesting. [*]The soundtrack is spectacular. There isn't a song that's wrong in the entire game. Katamari Damacy is frequently included in retro-game compilations (Rolling Star and the eponymous title track in particular) because they can get in your head and persist well after you've shut the game off. Each level plays an appropriate track and loops it in different ways, which can lead to some levels feeling more beginner-friendly than others whereas others have a higher tempo. [*]Later levels are very, very satisfying. When the katamari gets to a large size and can essentially suck up anything and everything, it's almost a cathartic experience. The tiny strawberries you left behind early on aren't even visible anymore as you suck up whole cars, barns, and shipping containers which gives a great feeling of progression. [*]This game has a great, playable credit sequence which I enjoyed very much. The Cons: [*]There were many areas where I struggled with the controls, mostly because they get more complicated based on a number of factors. I never quite understood why, but I think there are a few influences on your ability to roll that need to be taken into consideration. First, the size of the katamari. The bigger it gets, the more inertia you need to overcome. Next, current velocity. It is understandably more difficult to move the katamari if it is moving fast and in a straight line. In addition, there are slopes which will resist movement, as well as the percentage of each stick moving forward in a particular direction. The controls are already trying to do a lot, and if you're giving the game lots of inputs, you can accidentally end up sprinting. Anywho, yeah. I spent a lot of time wrestling with the camera trying to turn around because there are two inputs required for a quick turn, but that's opposed by katamari size, velocity, and position. [*]There are lots of spots on levels where the katamari can get stuck. I mean this in multiple ways. First, it's possible to wedge yourself in between two objects that you can't suck up yet, leading to immobilization until the katamari sheds enough mass to get out (which feels bad). This can also happen with moving objects, which sometimes stop if they hit the katamari. Next, the player needs a lot of map awareness to know where other objects could be. There were some levels where it wasn't obvious that you could roll through a barrier and get to the rest of the town, leading to lots of lost time searching for any scraps that could move the katamari up a weight class. For this reason, go into each level expecting to fail and explore as much as possible on your first attempt. Later levels fix this (as levels get reused). The Indecisive: [*]In many ways, this game is a lot to handle. The controls are something I haven't dealt with before. I'm analyzing my perception of the map to try and optimize the best route to roll. Meanwhile, the King speaks to me like a DJ mix controller and the game blares at full volume that I have 30 seconds left to go. The soundtrack goes hard and sometimes I felt exhausted after completing a level. [*]I'll add that, where this game isn't just being weird, it's distinctly Japanese. Most of my katamaris started with takoyakis - a fried octopus ball that is common in Osaka. Though the King travels all over the world, each level is populated with Japanese items which might leave you thinking "that milk container looks weird". It both celebrates and satirizes Japanese culture. Not a con, just different. [*]While refilling the sky, there are a handful of different types of levels. There's obviously the main one, which is just "make a katamari as big as X in Y minutes", but there are some which involve "get as many banana peels as possible" or "get me a tree, but only one and make it as big as possible". This isn't the most variety and sometimes it comes across as weird (looking at you Virgo), almost like gimmick levels. You only really know the stipulations once you've selected the mission. The Verdict: The remaster of Katamari Damacy is a celebration of quirkiness. It highlights a game that is fundamentally different from convention in the modern era and puts it back on shelves asking players to take that chance and break out of their WASD comfort zone. Bizarre, enchanting, and at times overwhelming, Katamari Damacy is like a gaming comet that only comes around every once in a while. 8.5 / 10

The "games are art" crowd always talk about their silly little games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and The Witcher 3. Obviously games have always been art and these people just want to feel special and validated in an age of "consuming media". But people never really talk about this game in these discussions. Most of the time when this game was brought up back in the day all you would hear is how it's this super quirky game from super weird Japan! It's the country with the guy that bites the shoe and it's chocolate! They are living in 2050 because they have a canned drink with a slice of lemon in it! The point I'm getting to is that nowadays this game actually gets recognised for what it is. It's a beautiful piece of art that no other "crazy japanese media" from the "japan iceberg explained" can replicate. I mean the gameplay is literally just rolling the ball around, and the levels are mostly just the same few town areas. But when you play this game you appreciate all the details, because every little object and every musical note comes from a place of passion.
