Hey, you. Person scrubbing through for negative reviews because the positive ones make your eyes glaze over. I've got what you're looking for. The negative reviews you're most concerned about, the ones citing lack of depth or hooks, all have low playtime as a common factor, and this is the primary directing influence of those reviews. Not to say first impressions don't matter, those reviews are there for a reason, but they aren't missing these hooks because of a lack of them. They just didn't trust the process. All I can say is stick with it and you'll feel rewarded. If you're an old hand at roguelikes, you're gonna feel like there's a lot of technical detail in the combat that you're not having the opportunity to flex due to the enemies just dying immediately. Get the core loop down and secure that first win, after which the game opens up in earnest, and you'll have that chance. You'll get it. Additionally, if you're having trouble with the visual clarity, open up the accessibility settings and mess around with them. Those are there for your benefit, not for decoration.

If you’re looking for a game that delivers relentless action, razor-sharp combat, and an atmosphere drenched in cosmic horror, look no further than Katanaut. From its very opening moments, the game plunges you into a space station rife with mutations and menace—every corridor hums with dread and every swing of the blade feels meaningful. Katanaut's combat is a standout: fluid, responsive, and satisfying. The katana feels weighty yet agile, the guns provide great complement for ranged threats, and the dodge/slash rhythm genuinely makes you feel like you’re mastering something. Katanaut's roguelite progression is nicely tuned; you’re rewarded for each death with more knowledge, more build options, more freedom to experiment. The memory-fragment upgrade system ensures that each run matters. The pixel-art design is rich and moody, the environment evokes a dilapidated space station in collapse, and the sound / synthwave soundtrack give the whole experience a strong identity. Whether you prefer rushing in with the blade, picking off from range, or mixing abilities and implants, the game offers enough toys to keep you invested and exploring different styles. If you’ve enjoyed games like Dead Cells, Katana Zero or other tight-action roguelites, Katanaut hits that sweet spot of difficulty + reward. The thrill of chaining kills, dodging at the last moment, exploring the next section of the station—it all adds up to a very satisfying loop. It’s also refreshing to see a strong indie title that combines melee and ranged so effectively while keeping things fast-paced. Plus, the setting gives it more flavour than many generic action games—there’s a cosmic horror twist, an underlying narrative of a station gone wrong and twisted creatures lurking in the dark. I'd give Katanaut a solid 8.5/10.

this is not a good game. it is a GREAT game. hyper-violent horror-scifi narratively akin to Dead Space and visually similar to games like Carrion and Iron Meat but with a focus on Metroidvania game mechanics and an emphasis on swift, stamina (arguably one's most precious resource - its all about the timing!)-fueled-melee-combat...it plays smoothly and its loads of fun - amazing that it was developed by a single individual and i imagine we will be seeing some great things from Voidmaw. i don't have much else to say because i feel "great game" sums it up rather succinctly as that is exactly what this experience is.

I had the honor of translating this game, so I might be a little biased (even though I purchased the product myself after release and did not receive any compensation for posting my opinion). As a person who does not play (m)any roguelike titles, I was immensely pleased with what Katanaut had to offer. Intricate monster designs inspired by Dead Space and classic sci-fi horror, varied and gripping gameplay with lots of skills and weapons to choose from, as well as the awesome synthwave music to accompany your journey. If you enjoyed Dead Space or Dead Cells, definitely give this game a chance. Very impressive work by a solo developer well worth its money, and a great entry point for people less familiar with the genre.
