I was initially dismissive of *Kathy Rain*. After playing the demo, I thought it felt too much like a weaker imitation of *Gabriel Knight* and the *Blackwell* series. Giving it a second chance changed my mind. The influence is certainly there, but *Kathy Rain* has enough personality of its own. It belongs to that familiar but effective subgenre of supernatural detective adventures: an apparently ordinary mystery gradually opens into something darker and stranger. Kathy herself initially looks like a stock rebellious college student - leather jacket, cigarettes, motorcycle, dyed hair - but the family history behind that persona gives her considerably more depth. The story begins when she returns home for her grandfather's funeral after years of estrangement, and her reunion with her grandmother sets off an investigation into long-buried events. The grounded mystery and character work are stronger than the overtly supernatural side of the story. In fact, one of my strongest memories of the game is that the final, more nightmarish stretch felt like its weakest part. Some of the story elements never quite came together into a fully satisfying ending. That said, the journey there works extremely well. The pixel art is beautiful, the voice acting is excellent, and the puzzles are generally challenging without becoming frustrating. I only needed help a couple of times, and most solutions felt fair. It took me about five hours to finish, which felt like the right length. *Kathy Rain* is not quite on the level of the games that inspired it, but it is a very good adventure in the same tradition, with a strong protagonist, an engaging mystery, and a world I would happily return to. I was looking for a game similar to Night in the Woods and while I can't say they are exactly the same, the supernatural, metaphorical and somehow comfortingly eerie nature of the games draw parrelles in my mind. This game was charming and emotional and after playing through in one day I was delighted to see there were achievements left to obtain in later playthroughs! I hope everyone who comes across this game gives it the time I so humbly claim it deserves because you will not regret it, I can't wait for a while to pass so one day I forget the captivating story of this game and that allows me to experience its craftmanship and charm with fresh eyes once again. This game is, and I don't say this lightly, a true 10/10 adventure.
A gripping mystery that humbled me. I didn’t expect the story to take such a dark and mysterious turn. The first two chapters were smooth sailing—easy enough that I felt pretty confident in my detective skills. But once the logic started getting really complicated, I realized my brain just couldn't keep up anymore. Even so, this is a great game. The voice acting is solid, the music fits the mood perfectly, and you really can't fault the classic pixel art style. It has so much charm. Honestly, I have so much respect for anyone who managed to solve everything from start to finish without a single guide. As for me, I’ll be admiring the story from the sidelines while looking up the answers. 😂
