Cute, fun funny, and bit-size PNC adventures. You get six main "detective cases" and three bonus ones as part of the game. The two main characters (Detective McQueen and his sidekick Officer Dooley) are the same for all of them and you have some recurring NPCs, but otherwise you can play the cases in any order. Each case can take you from 10 to 30 minutes to complete, depending on how much time you pend reading all the flavor text or trying to find all the interactions. Honestly, the main questions you have to ask yourself are: 1. Do I like this kind of art style? 2. Do I like point and click games? If you answered "yes" to BOTH of these questions then buy with confidence! Just maybe wait for a sale because $15 is a little much. I'd say $10 is a much more appropriate price for the fun you're getting. Also... the bonus cases have a TINY bit of "adventure game logic" in them, but I can count on one hand the number of times I had to look up a hint and honestly if I had more patience I could have absolutely figured out how to progress all by myself. Recommended!
This is a series of nine point-and-click adventure game minisodes (similar to the Strongbad games if you've played those): You control Detective Francis McQueen in all the episodes; he's (almost) always accompanied by his idiot, conspiracy theorist partner Officer Dooley; and some of the supporting cast recurs but you there's no overarching plot and inventory doesn't carry over. Episode eight is the shortest and takes around 5 minutes but they generally run 10-20 minutes. The episode concept is a neat way of keeping the maps small and inventory management manageable. It also makes the game skew pretty easy. For a supernatural-themed game, there are few "moon logic" puzzles and just clicking on items often gives you a hint about what you're supposed to use it for or, for example, if you try to combine two things but you're missing an intermediate step it'll say "good idea but I need a way to keep it from falling off" rather than "I can't do that". With adventure games there's always a fine line between needing to give peanuts and mice to an elephant and putting the red key in the red door and it is what it is. Just saying, if you're looking for a real brain challenge, this is probably not the game for you. There are also a few mini-puzzles scattered about that will have you connecting wires or pipes, etc. They're fun. The art is a neo-pixel style. For some reason none of the human characters have faces which I think is a weird aesthetic choice. Everything else looks good, including an adorable monster who does have a great-looking face. The story is kind of nonexistent. We're dropped in media res with in-game indicators that this is the 13th chapter of Darkside Detective cases. McQueen is kind of the Mulder of the local police force who's sent out to investigate weird cases but more often just finds something weird happening where he is and has to solve it. We're never given much explanation of the hows or whys, just "gremlins are loose, gotta round them up". As mentioned, there's no overarching plot between the cases which is a bit of a letdown, I could have done with a Phoenix Wright-style where a bunch of seemingly unconnected cases end up having a common thread. The characters are a high point, though. They all have their fun, quirky personalities from the pyromaniac rich girl to the conspiracy theorist detective to the no-nonsense computer science / occult student. It was always a pleasure to see them and how they would react to the newest case McQueen had found himself in the middle of. Again, if you're looking for difficult puzzles and a deep and immersive story, this is probably not the game for you. But if you want some bite-sized point and click fun with quirky, memorable characters, then give this a try.
I am a big point and click fan, but don’t typically play pixelated games so I was very skeptical. But after how much I enjoyed Seance of Blake Manor I decided to give it a chance. And man, I didn’t think it was possible for me to adore two pixelated men so much! The mysteries and their settings are fun and I really enjoyed the humor. I can’t wait to see more of these two.
the darkside detective is a fun point and click puzzle game following the story of detective mcqueen and officer dooley as they solve supernatural cases through twin lakes. the game features mini games and great humour in all 9 cases from both main characters. each case takes around 20-30 minutes to play through with a mixture of simple and hard puzzles as you progress. the game makes use of pixels as the art style creating a charming nostalgic vibe, the background music is impeccable when paired with the art style.
