My favorite game of all time. I’ve been playing through the entire game every few years since I was a kid, and it’s one of the few games I’ve never gotten tired of. Steam says I have ~100 hours, but in reality, that number is far, far higher. I still remember having the original 2-CD version of the game and how the second CD broke, so I couldn’t play the game for a very long time. The game has simple but perfect game design, fantastic levels, beautiful graphics, an interesting soundtrack, great balance, etc., etc. The single-player campaign is excellent for all factions. The missions are thoughtfully designed around the game’s core design, and in every mission, it feels like everything is exactly where it should be. Of course, after playing the game for over 20 years, you start noticing that this isn’t always the case, but the game still offers a billion different possibilities and strategies for completing the levels, so I always try to play them in a different way than I did before. All three factions are incredibly fun to play, and whenever I think I’ve found some advantage that one of them has over the others, the game eventually proves me wrong, especially when playing multiplayer. So overall, the game is very well balanced. The game also has a unit editor as well as a map editor, although the map editor is a bit more difficult to use. Also, now the language versions works fine, so you can play it on German and French too. This recent update, as well as the open beta that came before it, has been fantastic. Multiplayer works well, there are no more random crashes during single-player missions, and IceReaper and everyone else have really put a lot of effort into fixing everything. The communication on the Discord channel during the update was also perfect. Thank you for that, I'm really grateful. For ultrawide monitors (21:9), I recommend using a custom resolution of 1600x672 to avoid black bars. As for KKND 2 as a game, I think it’s outstanding in every way. The difficulty scales nicely throughout the game, the level design is excellent, and I literally remember every level by heart. I think the graphics still look fantastic even after 28 years. I’ve seen some AI-generated recreations of the game, and I’ve also seen 3D models inspired by it, but I still think the original sprites are unbeatable.
Just had an initial play. First impression is that it is buggy. Load/Save works about 50% of the time. When it does NOT work the whole game just crashes. Wiped everything off the level and it just would not end. Needs to be done in a particular order. The menu at the right side of the screen contains different options every time I have run the same level. I still like the retro C&C vibe. Great music. I shall persevere. Update: 31/8/2026 I reinstalled with the new patch and it is marvellous. Full screen, high resolution and not a bug in sight. The gameplay is fab. The levels are well designed so that there are many possible solutions. Just been playing for 3 hours straight. Only stopped because of the complaints from the boss that music was too loud.
Excellent game, old school RTS game. I Excellent old school RTS game. KKND 2 is still absolute classic, Great gameplay, memorable units and that old-school RTS feeling that many modern games simply can't replicate. Almost 30 years later and I'm still playing it. That says everything.
