Feb. 2025
This is one of the best games I've ever played. And I've played uhhhhh...... Many. At its core, Last Command is a bullet hell that is constantly reinventing itself and is not satisfied just throwing uncountable armies of circles that blot out the sun and calling it an "attack pattern." Instead, each phase of its bosses (which often have NINE phases) are creative hand-crafted ideas usually with unique art and an idea that doesn't get re-used for any future fight and this love for pouring so many interesting ideas to learn holds up to the game's very last moments. At no point did I ever feel like I've already seen everything the game had to offer nor was I 'going through the motions.' Each boss tore me down and forced me to TRULY learn what fresh hell they were throwing at me. And GOD was it difficult, but so SO satisfying. Difficulty in bullet hells I think is the real make-or-break element for me. Squeezing my way through minuscule openings to the point where I feel like I'm playing an endless game of Operation while someone's punching me in the kidneys for 10 straight minutes... does not make for fun bosses, imho. Rabbit and Steel comes to mind as a game that had very fun attack patterns to figure out since they were tough as nails but had you THINK about what sections would be safe instead of demanding you constantly threaded a million needles. Last Command finds a brilliant balance of skill-based reaction while also needing to learn the logic behind boss' attack patterns, and even the most bs feeling ones will steadily become more and more clear over your attempts as there is a method to the madness. I was extremely impressed with the game's difficulty curve. For the most part, each next boss felt tougher than the last, which is unbelievable considering how the bosses sport their own completely new ideas each time and aren't just "okay but add more bullets than last boss" or "the shots are just faster and bigger now" How the game managed to organize the difficulty of ideas astounds me. The balancing of the Modules you collect which lets you modify your skills in combat also were extremely flexible and well designed. MANY times there were Modules I felt were useless or that I "figured out the best ones" and changed my mind constantly or remembered ones that could really help out for bosses I was having a crazy hard time with and the satisfaction for finding the right tool for the job but still having to earn your victory from skill and not just countering them is just... oh man dude, this entire game is chef's kiss all the time. Gameplay feels a bit awkward at first since they're doing a really unique take on the genre with its Snake-inspired movement, but you also have a lot of control by being able to shift into 'Analyze Mode' which lets you move freely in any direction at a slower pace, usually to dodge clusters of attacks or stop your momentum. The way you simply attack is also unique where Data spawns on the battle arena in somewhat random spots which you have to chase down and collect to build up energy to unleash your attack in either a small or massive string if you can manage to continue collecting Data without getting hit. You're always in a position to show off and get more potential out of your movements which is pure genius and the act of collecting the Data ensures you don't do that thing of finding 'the safe corner' of a bullet hell boss and basically ignoring as much of the map as possible. You actually have to understand the attacks and be comfortable dodging them from so many angles. Seriously brilliant design, even if RNG plays a bit of a role in how hard a boss phase could be, but it's not to such a ridiculous degree that the RNG is *why* you lose. You are still always in control of being able to survive the attacks regardless of where the Data is sending you. While I am praising the heck out the bosses, I do have to admit some phases didn't hit the mark for me or they were a bit too creative for their own good. I was too stubborn to lower the difficulty, but if you come across a boss you REALLY don't enjoy the gimmick of, I'd highly recommend making the decision that's best for your blood pressure. My language got a bit more colorful the further I got, but even the bosses that got under my skin I ended up still thinking were fun when I finally got to grips with what was going on. Even the one I was stuck on for nearly 3 hours... Overall, if you're a fan of difficult games and are tired of bosses that feel artificially difficult these days, I'd definitely check this one out. Many modern "hard" bosses feel like they just don't respect your time by shoving all its actually tricky parts at the very end making it almost impossible to learn, or your winning attempt was because "they didn't do the overtuned attack this time" and you feel like you got lucky instead of mastering the encounter. This game does not feel that way. I haven't been this satisfied playing something in forever. Can't recommend enough.

-Cleared on Expert- TLDR: If you like Undertale boss fights, Nier hacking, basic bullet hell that isn't on Touhou level, or snake: this is a great game to try. Story: 2/5 For a ~10 hour game that is mostly spent in battle, there isn't really much to this. The story is more or less as simple as it gets. There are some interesting gimmicks to the story that some people may have seen before, but at the very least it's decent enough story for what it is. Gameplay: 5/5 The game is summarized as a snake x bullet hell game and while it isn't wrong; people would probably be thinking of Touhou when reading bullet hell and under that impression: it's not. The game is snake with a handful of interesting bosses to fight that each have their own interesting mechanics to learn to deal with: some of which might not really even have bullets at all. The varying difficulties for the game should suit any kind of player from the most casual to the most hardcore players. Personally as someone who plays FFXIV, Rabbit & Steel, and other Crespirit games: progging through fights on expert was an enjoyable experience while not being too difficult. Since I feel the gameplay is the highlight of the entire game, I don't really want to discuss anything in particular about the encounters due to how short the game is, but the fights will feel alot like how it feels to play Undertale instead of solely being a bullet hell game. Graphics: 4/5 It's not like this is some AAA game, but graphically speaking this is a really pretty game for what it is, especially when paired with how the gameplay is like. I do think there are quite alot of flashing lights so I would be very wary of that if you have issues with epilepsy. There is a colorblind mode for people who may have issues with colors in this game since some aspects of gameplay are color-related. Audio: 3/5 I actually listened to a bit of the soundtrack before playing the game and because of experiences with Rabi-Ribi and TEVI, I had higher expectations for the music, but in this case: having context and hearing the BGMs while playing the game do make a huge difference versus listening to the BGMs prior. After playing the game, I ended up liking the music much more than I expected to, but it's not at the level that I'd be rushing to play any particular song on repeat. Game Time: 2/5 This game is roughly 10 hours to beat the story, probably significantly more if you were attempting to 100% the game by beating the hardest difficulty, but playing on the hardest difficulty isn't for everyone so it's understandable that people might judge the game more for how short it may seem. There are some DLC currently available for random side content to do, but aside from adventure mode to refight bosses, there isn't much replayability to the game aside from trying to beat higher difficulty bosses. There is however a story DLC coming in 2025, so hopefully that may extend the game to a more favorable length. Overall: Don't buy this game expecting a great story, but if you're someone who likes interesting boss designs or maybe even simply just a desire for DPS uptime, Crespirit tends to do extremely well in designing boss encounters in their games and Last Command doesn't miss. Using snake as a design, the game is very fun to play and I really did wish there was much more content to play aside from adding nightmare mode to my to-do list. I am looking forward to the 2025 DLC.

Honestly, this was a unique bullet hell experience, the snake movement and form of attack made for an engaging fun time. The story is simple and a bit split apart in the over world but I can see past it with the great variety of boss fights and music. My only 'complaint' is that it gets good at using all the things you learn by the middle-end, making me want more at the end of the game when it's about to end :<. The last couple of bosses really felt like the devs were cooking bangers bosses. I'll be waiting here for when they drop dlc for this game in the meantime Definitely recommend it you were looking for something new in the bullet hell genre (it might be hard on your first go)

I'm not really more positive or negative on this game. The gameplay is amazing, the bosses are fun and enjoyable to run through god knows how many times, the music rocks no matter how many times I hear it. But there are a few problems I have with the game, and to a lesser extent, the devs/publishers. First off, The story. The story has no real substance to it, only thing it does decently well is foreshadowing and character intros. The finale to the story is also very well done. However, the are a few instances where we are introduced to a character and no less than three fights later the character gets alt+tabbed out from existence and we are expected to care about them. I don't know about you, but I need to learn about/spend time with the character on screen for at least 2 hours before I really care about them. Secondly, the cosmetics and the DLC. There exists supporter exclusive DLC for when this game was on kickstarter. The good news? it's purely cosmetic. The bad news? they have an option in the games settings for changing to said cosmetic even if you don't have access to it, plus they have a STEAM TRADING CARD depicting said cosmetic (fei vs. SpFei). I have the incredible agony that is owning said trading card without said cosmetics being accessible in game (I just want to spiff out fei, please devs add at least one more Fei skin). The last thing I want to rage about is their pre-order package. I found this game 2 years after release, but after playing the game I really wanted to get my hands on some of the pre-order items, this being the first time I have ever wanted to do so. I was extremely disappointed to find that I could not buy, no matter where I looked, the paper DIY Fei kit that was included in the pre-order bundle. The fact that I was unable to purchase a Fei for my room nor an outfit for Fei had greatly soured my mood regarding this game. I do recommend this game for those that want a (mildly) refreshing take on the bullet hell genre while not having too hard of a time, with both optional easy and challenge modes being available. TL:DR It's a good game but I'm upset the Dev's won't take more of my money Gameplay is great, story is mid, and the snake movement feels awkward at first but gets really easy to use after an hour.

Takes Undertale's minimalist, danmaku dodging combat and polishes to a sheen, and greatly improves on it by allowing you to attack during the action while expecting much more of the player overall. Plot is forgettable... something-something computer programs, humanity, 4th wall... but the combat and exploration are enough of a joy and it's enough of a pretense to string them together. Aesthetic is strong but mostly monochromatic with simple shapes and a few nice sprites. You can trust any action game CreSpirit makes to be a banger.
