YMMV. It's the best pirate game I've ever played, but it's also the worst Yakuza game I've ever played.

I got to 100% a Yakuza game without touching Mahjong or Shogi. More Majima games, please!

Yakuza games, giving completionists a ton of goofy nonsense to do since 2005. I'm still not gonna learn how to play majong or shogi though...

Yakuza games are like pizza. Even when it's bad it's kinda good. Standard formula besides some really grindy ship battles.

Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is a spin off from the main Like a Dragon series, featuring Goro Majima as the playable character. After waking up on the beach of a small island while suffering from amnesia, Majima joins a pirate crew in search of lost treasure. This is a tricky review to write because much of it is going to sound quite negative. However, I think the biggest factor that is influencing my feelings is that this is the 14th game in the Yakuza franchise that I’ve played, which means that much of PYiH just feels like more of the same. This isn’t a bad game, its just another one. Story (medium quality) • Main story is fine. It features a large cast of characters making alliances and betraying each other, but the stakes don’t feel as important as previous games. • The story follows on from the events of Infinite Wealth, and heavily references what Ichiban dealt with on Nele Island, so I would advise playing that game first to avoid spoilers. • Because Majima has amnesia, for large parts of the game I didn't really feel like he was the same character that we’ve seen in previous games. Especially during the substories, the dialogue could have been written for Kiryu or Ichiban. And its not just me who thinks this, because there's a lengthy drink link conversation with two of Majima's Yakuza subordinates who say he hasn't just lost his memories, his personality has changed too, he's not crazy/unpredictable, he's being too nice, etc. • Most conversations are text only, which means there’s lots of reading, in both the main quest and substories. Only cutscenes are voiced. Japanese voice acting is good as always, I just wish there was more of it. Gameplay (medium quality) • The game is quite linear for around the first 8 hours, but it does eventually give the player freedom to take a break from the main story, explore Honolulu, and do all the usual activities that are found in Yakuza games, including substories and minigames (darts, pool, golf, karaoke, casino, master system, sicko snap, crazy delivery, dragon kart, multiple choice exams, etc). • There’s a new cooking minigame, and the baseball batting has been changed so now you’re hitting cannonballs at explosive barrels. The biggest new minigame involves recruiting people to join your pirate crew, who can then be assigned to fire your cannons during naval battles, or be part of your boarding crew for melee fights on the deck of enemy ships. Meanwhile you can upgrade your ship with different types of weapons such as frost cannons and laser beams. You’ll perform these battles during the main story, and there are also multiple tournaments to compete in at Madlantis. • Combat is real time, and while running around the city, the mechanics are quite familiar. In addition to the heat meter, Majima has another meter which when fully charged will let him summon dopplegangers to attack enemies (I think he had this ability in one of Kiryu’s games where you had to fight against Majima), or play a cursed musical instrument to summon animal spirits. • Fights on board enemy ships are really chaotic, 20 vs 40 mass brawls. There’s too much happening on screen that I often couldn’t see what I’m doing, which means there’s no hope for tactics, just button mash attack and dodge. • Open world uses an Ubisoft style design, where low effort activities are spammed all over the map. For example, you can collect bounties for wanted criminals. Each one is just a simple fight against an elite enemy and sometimes a few minions which takes about 2 minutes to complete. There are 63 of these bounties. There are 50 drink link conversations which were previously seen in Infinite Wealth, where you just go to a place on the map and press the Y button to listen to a 30 second conversation, eventually unlocking a cutscene at the Revolve bar. There are 65 treasures to collect by exploring small islands and fighting a couple of enemy mobs. I would have preferred to just have say 10 of each activity, but make them longer and more detailed, more unique, more interesting. For example, the bounties could have been substories where you would talk to a cop to get background details of the crime, talk to witnesses and victims to gather information, find the criminal, defeat them, then have a final conversation with the victim to finish the story. Technical (medium quality) • It took me 46 hours to complete the main story and most substories and open world activities. • I didn’t have any problems with bugs, crashes, or framerate (RTX 3080, i7-12700K, 32GB DDR4, 1440p). Recommendation Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is definitely one of the weaker games in the Like a Dragon franchise, but its not a bad game overall, its just more of the same stuff we’ve already seen and done so many times before. I would advise waiting for a big sale. I hope that Ryu Ga Gotoku can find a way to make their gameplay and quest design less repetitive in their future games, both for Like a Dragon and Stranger Than Heaven, because these developers are clearly talented and usually excellent storytellers, and I want to see them get back to their top form.
