Crymachina, I really wasn't expecting this game to be as good as it was. Coming from someone who 100%ed Crystar (The previously believed prequel to this game and by FAR my favorite game) This game was not only a pleasant surprise, it exceeded my expectations. The gameplay is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fun. The leveling/progression feels clean. the soundtrack is phenomenal, Sakuyzo completely knocked this one out of the park (again). Story and characters are just the most loveable and emotionally attaching aspects of a game i havent experienced in a while. If you want a unique, emotional, captivating experience, play Crymachina, i just know you'll love it. 10/10
The story is decent if somewhat confusing, graphics are unremarkable, gameplay is anywhere between decent to terrible (the balancing is even worse), lip-syncing is non-existent, character animations are bare bones outside of combat, and the whole thing is a visual novel in disguise. Unfortunately even with all that said the true ending managed to make me cry and the soundtrack is amazing (Sakuzyo doesn't miss), so I'm obligated to leave a positive review. Just never buy this at full price.
CRYMACHINA is a decent game, Honestly for the most part I enjoyed my time with it, the story was great, and the gameplay (early to mid game) was fun. I liked the characterization of each character I felt almost every character was fleshed out and without spoilers there was ample development throughout the games plot. The plot was the highlight for me with multiple twists I didn't expect. Ample foreshadowing was given too. The story did invoke a little emotion in me at times with funny, sad, and happy moments. Nothing too overblown but content nonetheless. The combat initially I found fun. A little jank but at its core I enjoyed it a lot up to mid game. Character designs were unique (which i liked) I liked the art style The overall game environment is alright just passable, it really was just hallways to funnel you into your next boss or enemy group though. It didn't blow me away but it didn't stick out as "bad" either. The Music was genuinely peak. Sakuzyo cooked. However the game falls off a little, CRYMACHINA is a short game if you focus on the main story it will last you 15hours give or take but it seems the devs knew this and tried to pad time by forcing grinding. Later on in the plot you run out of level ups and enemies start 1 shoting you even on "casual mode". They do this during pivotal plot moments it felt "cheap" and unfair, I cheesed not wanting to grind by using explosion Auxiliarys that do percentage damage but still you have to perfect dodge everything or else you just die. I felt I was bashing my head into a wall just trying to get good rng on where the boss would TP to use my cheese since I was so under leveled nothing I had would do damage. Also "Jank" the combat is janky at times dodges sometime have collision and sometimes do not, they sometime dodge "snap" according to a lock-on and sometimes do not. It felt really inconsistent especially when fighting multiple enemies at once, I would perfect dodge then my character would do a automatic counter but I would just die in the counter due to the issues I mentioned earlier. Or I would get stuck on "nothing" and just not move when I dodged. However when the combat works it feels honestly great, hitting a counter into a stun -> down attack was peak gameplay, I just wish it was more polished. I played CRYSTAR earlier this year and went into CRYMACHINA comparing it. I felt like the CRYSTAR story was much stronger but the CRYMACHINA gameplay was better. I will look forward to the next "CRY" game iteration. The "CRYSTAR" style art scattered throughout the game had me hyped for some reason. Pick the game up on sale if you liked CRYSTAR.
a gold star for you simply for considering playing this game crymachina is a little bit of a weird action rpg / visual novel hybrid. not terribly long on either count, but a drastic step up from crystar (which i will reference several times, don't really have much of a choice!) so what exactly is crymachina? the loop of the game is : relatively short action stage, story event, discussions at base. by all account, the story is rather short and not terribly verbose - it says what it wants to say and gets to it rather quick. the themes are much like crystar (family, humanity and love and what those mean), but the biggest difference is the gameplay. unlike crystar, crymachina does not waste your time with endless, absolutely mindless dungeon crawling, and that allows the game to shine. which also lets every other aspect of the game shine. great performances from the VAs also help elevate the whole package. the combat isn't on par with more "modern" combo games, but between the few moves you can pull off, it felt fun to me, and is not a button masher. if anything, button mashing will get you killed really quickly - the action stages are short and the focus is on bosses, and messing up on attacks means that half your health will simply disappear. to counter that, if you stay relatively on par with the level requirement and get a bit of gear, you will do equal damage and blast though the opposition. i was able to grind what i needed to beat the game within the 16 hours (with a bit of idling) it took me to beat this. it's relatively forgiving, which once again eased the burden compared to the ridiculous requirements crystar asked of you to beat the game. i fully expect the type of person to pick up this game to enjoy it, but it isn't going to convert people who only play AAA offerings. it's much better than crystar on the enjoyment front though, thank god. if you crave more of the game, there's even a bit of post conclusion things to do! at the end of the day, this is a furyu game, which means ambition and passion meet lower budget so a more restrained game. i do think the price is a bit daunting for the average person (i picked it up on sale myself) but i had a fantastic time with this game and might come back to it eventually for the extra things i have not done. another gold star for you for reading this!
