Recommended with caveats. It's a short game, kinda tropey, and the writing is pretty clumsy. It's a flawed visual novel, but if you don't mind that, it's cheap and will be a nice couple of hours. I also really like the art style, which helps a lot.

Love at First Sight, developed by Creepy Cute and published by Sekai Project, is a short but sincere kinetic visual novel that focuses on the quiet, awkward, and emotionally charged moments of young romance. Rather than leaning on elaborate branching paths or high-concept twists, the game commits to telling a single, linear story about empathy, curiosity, and learning to see another person beyond first impressions. This restraint defines the entire experience, making it feel intimate and personal, as though the player is being invited to quietly observe a relationship taking shape rather than actively steering it. The story follows Mamoru, a shy transfer student struggling to find his footing at a new school, whose attention is drawn to Sachi Usui, a reserved girl who stands out due to her unusual appearance and social isolation. What begins as curiosity gradually turns into a genuine desire to understand her, and the narrative unfolds through everyday interactions, shared silences, and small emotional revelations. The writing favors subtlety over drama, allowing feelings to develop organically instead of rushing toward melodrama. Conversations often linger on uncertainty and hesitation, capturing the discomfort and vulnerability that come with adolescent relationships. While the premise could easily have become exploitative or superficial, the story consistently treats its characters with care, framing Sachi not as a novelty but as a person shaped by her experiences and insecurities. Love at First Sight is designed as a kinetic visual novel, meaning there are no meaningful player choices or alternate routes. The story moves forward at its own pace, and the player’s role is to read, reflect, and absorb rather than decide outcomes. This approach limits replay value, but it also allows the narrative to remain tightly focused and emotionally coherent. The lack of branching paths ensures that character arcs are not diluted by multiple endings or conflicting tones, and the game benefits from this clarity of intent. For players who enjoy visual novels as interactive literature rather than decision-making systems, this structure feels appropriate and even refreshing. Visually, the game has a distinctive and slightly unsettling art style that aligns well with its themes. Character illustrations are expressive and imperfect, giving the cast a hand-drawn, almost storybook quality that emphasizes emotion over technical polish. Sachi’s design, in particular, is handled with restraint, avoiding exaggerated shock value while still acknowledging her difference in a way that feels integral to the story. Backgrounds are simple but effective, framing scenes without distracting from character interactions. Although the presentation shows its indie origins—such as limited animation and a lower resolution than modern visual novels—the artwork carries a strong sense of identity that helps the game stand out. The soundtrack supports the narrative quietly, relying on gentle, melancholic tracks that reinforce the reflective tone of the story. Music is used sparingly, often fading into the background during longer stretches of dialogue, which keeps the focus on reading rather than spectacle. There is no full voice acting, but the written dialogue is clear and emotionally legible enough that it rarely feels lacking. Sound design overall is understated, but this minimalism fits the game’s subdued atmosphere and prevents emotional moments from feeling overstated. One of the most common criticisms of Love at First Sight is its length. Most players will complete the story in a few hours, and because there are no alternate endings or hidden routes, the experience is entirely self-contained. For some, this brevity makes the game feel slight, especially when compared to longer, more complex visual novels. However, the concise runtime also works in the game’s favor by preventing the story from overstaying its welcome or padding itself with unnecessary scenes. The emotional arc remains focused from beginning to end, delivering a complete experience without filler. Ultimately, Love at First Sight succeeds by embracing simplicity and sincerity. It does not attempt to redefine the visual novel genre or overwhelm players with systems and choices; instead, it tells a gentle story about connection, understanding, and the courage it takes to reach out to someone who feels distant or misunderstood. Its strengths lie in its tone, its character-focused writing, and its willingness to let quiet moments carry emotional weight. For players who appreciate short, heartfelt visual novels that prioritize mood and character over mechanics, Love at First Sight offers a warm and memorable experience that lingers not because of spectacle, but because of its honesty. It's okay but has a lack of decisions you can make through the story (I think you only make one choice in the entire game), however, the novel is sweet and enjoyable with great visuals and character designs. 7/10
