Again, SMEE does make me grin like an idiot throughout the game with typical SMEE-ish vibe. Come, SMEE comrade, and don't fret about changing art style. You will love it alright.

LOVEPICAL-POPPY is the latest moege title by Smee. At a glance, this one is very different from previous Smee titles with the artstyle, which is done by a new artist in the eroge scene (Hanamaru). But once you get into the game, you'll quickly see that the style is no different from past Smee titles with the humor and flow of the VN. Simply put, Lovepical has all the classic humor and fun Smee is usually known for, and Smee fans will love this newest entry. The story gets wacky as soon as the very beginning, and the setting is quickly established, so in that sense, the VN is somewhat fast paced just like previous Smee titles. Reading the synopsis, you will see that the set-up is similar to another Smee title, Sugar Style, and they do share a lot of similarities. The VN starts by establishing the setting and cast. All the main cast gets introduced early, and then the common route spends the time the protagonist Tetsuya acclimating to his new environment while growing closer with all the roomers. In that sense, it is similar to Sugar Style with the protagonist there getting used to his new dorm life with his new roommates. Throughout the end of common route, you are faced with a choice, where then Tetsuya will slowly grow closer with one of the six heroines of the title. First the presentation, Smee VNs are usually known for having a "gimmick." In Making Lover, that was the ability to choose and customize your date plans with a heroine, while for Sugar Style, it was the ability to pick a "job" and looking around a heroine's room. For Lovepical, that gimmick comes in the form of being able to look around the dorm to see extra scenes from a heroine's point of view, being able to look into the minds of a heroine, and the H scenes different from traditional eroge H scenes in that you have to click certain body parts to proceed, and heroine's reactions differing depending on how much you have touched them. These gimmicks may seem minor, and in the end doesn't strongly impact the story, they do give a fresh take on the visual novel genre, and trying something new in this medium is always a positive. I do think there's some crazy fun potentials if they expand on the touching minigame and being able to read into a heroine's mind, these are interesting features, and would give make any VN experience fresh which is usually a medium where you simply read and press left click to proceed with dialogues. The story is classic Smee aka comedy slice-of-life / romance, with big emphasis on comedy. Just like past Smee titles, I found myself laughing out loud in multiple scenes. There are some serious moments, but those scenes rarely drag out, and most of then you'll find yourself laughing again quickly with more comedy. There are also various sweet moments typical in romance and slice-of-life story, and with how lovable the cast of Lovepical are, I found myself really enjoying those scenes as well. Regarding the cast, they were all vibrant and colorful, both visually and personality wise. Tetsuya himself is a fun protagonist, while the six heroines all had great and fun moments that made me love them more. Throughout the VN, there was at least one moments from each heroine where they impressed me so much they won a few points from me, without spoiling much, those moments include Miu showing her caring side for her friends, or how much Suzuka learned to care for her brother in a selfless way. Even the side characters and the sprite-less roomers were fun characters that brought colors into the setting, it really felt like the setting was one big community, and the setting would not be the same without those background roomers. The individual heroine routes are equally fun and each go into more details of a heroine's background while retaining the fun comedy flow of common route. I did end up enjoying all the routes, but my personal favorite route has to be Miu, Tanpopo, and Ayako, while Tanpopo herself ended up as my most favorite character in the entire VN. But all the routes were great. I do think the VN did a good job having a nice balance between the character development, serious moments, and comedy. One aspect does not overstay or drag on for longer than they should, so as a result the flow was perfect. I also thought the romance development were nice, despite some may thinking they occur fast, I think some routes like Nozomi, Suzuka, and Tamaki spend a good time throughout the route strengthening the relationship between Testuya and the heroine. I do not have a lot of complaints about the VN, but some of my minor complaints are picky stuff, like, without spoiling too much, I thought that the development of one heroine in common route felt pointless once we enter her route. Also, Tanpopo and Ayako are "side routes" so they are a tad shorter than the other four heroines. Despite that, I thought the length was pretty good for the two, but I do wish they were a bit longer to spend more time developing their background and such, this is especially true for Ayako, who herself doesn't have that much chance to shine during common, so her having more time to development in her route would have been nice. Overall, I love Lovepical-Poppy. As a Smee fan, I have been looking forward to the title since it was first revealed in Japan. Then when Kagura Games surprisingly announced its localization, I was very much looking forward to playing this myself, and I am glad I did, this was probably one of my most enjoyable moege experience as of late. Some may be put off by the new cutesy art style of this new work as opposed to the older Smee artstyle, but I promise you this, Lovepical-Poppy possess the classic Smee energy we all know and love, and moege and Smee fans alike will greatly enjoy this as much as I did.

Another great title from Smee, I’m glad that they chose a different approach for their storytelling this time. First of all, the protagonist was a true gentleman compared to other guys from the same studio; he was kind, hardworking, and understanding. It’s not that I mind the traditional quirky protag of Smee, but it was getting old; therefore, it truly was a refreshing experience. Secondly, the game made use of the common route to develop all heroines evenly, making the common route unusually long. This might test readers’ patience a bit, but for me, it was rather enjoyable as I could see how all heroines fell for the protag which is quite endearing. All the girls had the chance to show their colors, and I don’t feel like anyone was left behind. Regarding the heroines’ respective routes, one could be better than another depending on the readers’ taste, but I believe none were underdeveloped; even the sub-heroines’ routes were pretty charming. Overall, it was a great 2 weeks; I hope Kagami Game will localize the fandisc eventually.

LOVEPICAL-POPPY! might be the last VN I can finish this year, but what an amazing finish! It was developed by SMEE, the same company that made my favorite VN of all time, Making*Lovers! I have a single complaint about the game and it's not even a huge deal. Some routes are clearly better than the others, but I didn't find a single route I disliked. Other than that, I can only say positive things about it. While not as insanely funny as Making*Lovers, where it was quite often that I laughed out loud which is very rare for me, this game still made me smile countless times and got a few chuckles out of me. Which is impressing, considering how I usually watch almost everything with a poker face. Speaking of impressive, the most impressive thing was how insanely fast I ended up liking the main heroines and even the main character. The first impressions of the girls were so impactful and/or so cute that just after a few scenes I was already struggling, thinking who's route I want to read first. Sometimes maybe like one or two heroines manage to catch my interest this fast, even when I was reading Making*Lovers, it took me a bit to warm up to the heroines. What also impressed me is how well the heroines were written. It's not like they were something I've never seen before, but they were very well fleshed out, something I appreciated also in Making*Lovers. I know most, especially modern VNs have an amazing cast of voice actresses/actors, but here they were truly exceptional. To me the absolute standouts were Tamaki and Nozomi, but everyone else's VA deserves the highest praise I can give. The common route was one of the best common route I've read this year probably. It was fairly long (took me about 10 hours), but it never felt boring. It had some ups and downs, but nothing major as far as negatives goes and it was mostly just ups. Now, for the main routes (and the two additional side ones) in order how I've read them (the actual order doesn't matter): Tamaki: Probably the simplest route, but that doesn't mean it was bad. She's the definition of gap moe. She has a childish, innocent and playful side, but at the same time she can act very mature and everyone loves and respects her as the dorm's president. She's very responsible and disciplined, smart and has great leadership skills. Yet she also (not so) secretly craves to get pampered. It's really hard to dislike her and simply because of her cuteness, I enjoyed this route very much, she was just absolutely adorable! Suzuka: The (blood related) sister of the main character, who basically lived all her life with her big brother by her side. Which is why she has troubles adjusting to her new life at the dorm, her brother not being there. She wants to be independent and wants to reassure her brother that she's going to be okay, the reality isn't so simple. Which is basically the whole concept of her route. If I want to pick a route that I liked the least, it's definitely this one, but I also enjoyed it all the way through, so it's not like didn't like it. Suzuka wasn't exactly the most unique character, but as I said before, I really like every single character in this game, and being only a 4 hour long read, like the other main heroine routes, it never overstayed its welcome. Ayako: The first side route of the game. But I was impressed how much they packed into this about 2,5 hours long route. It kinda felt like a main heroine route, just compressed, but also without feeling rushed. She's the oldest heroine and being in the workforce for quite some time, having a "unique" boss at her workplace and being single during her entire life, made her quite the negative person. As an almost middle aged man myself, I was able to relate to her a bit too much, but it was also nice to see how her negativity slowly faded, having the main character by her side. A more "realistic" route, I guess. Tanpopo: This side route was crazy in a lot of ways. Tanpopo herself is like a storm, exactly as the main character described her. She just appears, stirs up your heart and goes at her own pace. But she's also true to herself, very open with her feelings and loves to help other people. She's a real gem and despite only having a side route, I enjoyed her's as much as the next two. It starts really fast, but it really fits her character. Nozomi: If I have to name someone who's the "main heroine", she's definitely the one. But not a very typical one. She already has a crush on the main character and does everything to seduce him, only to fail miserably. She's very clumsy, kinda freaky, but also extremely charming in a lot of ways. Except for Miu's route, her's feels like the most fleshed out. The ending felt a bit weird, not exactly in a negative way, more like it was a big upgrade to her, compared to how she was before. I guess this is what you call "character development" and I just wasn't expecting it. Even though there were hints that she's quite capable in some ways. Miu: It's super hard to talk about her route without any spoilers, so I'm not even going to attempt to do so. But what I can say is, this was on par with Nozomi's and Tanpopo's. Getting to know the full story behind her motivation and goals, not to mention the secrets she held was very interesting. Yet another well written heroine with a similarly well written route. I can very safely recommend this VN if you like romcoms. It had plenty of funny and cute moments, very entertaining banters between characters with some wholesome (and horny in the heroine routes) moments.

TLDR: If you love moege and cute girls doing fun things this is a must for you! Vn reminded me why I love SMEE vns and it surprises me everytime with how fun they are, the visual novel also has a lot of characters with the funniest expressions I've seen. Miu best girl! Kuma is the real best girl For my more detailed review about the routes: (has spoilers) Ayako route was really good and i liked it because of the chemistry between them, even if it was really short it really felt like they made an actual connection, plus I relate to a lot of things that she thinks lol plus she is super cute when she is having her small existential crisis moments. Tama-chan, I really love Tama chan but I'll be honest, her route is probably the weakest to me sadly, how they both fell in love and the actual story of the route felt pretty weak imo (plus I'm not a fan at all when they make heroines that are oblivious about sex, I hate that trope a lot) they did the same thing with Tanpopos route. Now talking about Tanpopo route.... she was pretty cute and I really like her character but I also think her route was really weak, it was cute how they went to visit their hometown but it shouldve been a bit longer or they should've had more moments together (can't use the excuse of it being short cuz Ayako is also a side route and it was pretty good.) Suzukas route I actually had a lot of fun with, I was kinda confused cuz I feel like all the stuff that they could've used the drama on, was used like literally at the very beginning of the route (them being siblings and the people at the dorm knowing, them telling their dad too) so I was a bit worried with how they were going to handle the route but I was honestly happy with how the handled the route, it's also probably the funniest of the vn and she has the pretties cg of the vn on her wedding dress. Miu route and character is by far my favorite out of all of them, her personality might be a bit hard for some people but man I'm super weak when it comes to tsunderes when they go full dere and they go full honest with their feelings, love how straightforward she was after she confessed her feelings. I was a bit annoyed at first with her wanting to record their dates and force him to be on his live streams but she was only a bit obnoxious during their first date, after that I had a lot of fun with her route and I really really LOVED the last section of her route a ♥♥♥♥ ton, the reason why she never used her actual name, to him calling her by her name while watching the meteor shower and the actual name tag changing to her real name was ultra kino, plus the after credit scene was the cherry to the top, she is for sure my favorite heroine of the whole vn. Nozomis route was honestly everything I was expecting from her route so I was not disappointed by it at all, felt like your usual cute route but i really enjoyed how upfront Nozomi is with her feelings ever since we met her during the common route, plus im a sucker for endings that do a time skip where they show them having a family, i LOVE those type of endings. In general. I only mention it a bit before but theres one little thing I really liked from both Nozomi and Suzuka and its that the other heroines don't just vanish from the face of earth and that they don't have just a small role through the route and they keep showing through the whole thing, during Tama chan even if her route was literally in the dorm you barely got to see the other heroines and with Miu you only really see Tanpopo at the beginning, its nothing out of this world but I honestly like more when heroines show in other routes and their reactions to the relationship of the girls route you are going through. But regardless of its ups and downs I think that Lovepical Poppy was a really good and fun visual novel, Making Lovers was like my 3rd vn ever so SMEE has a very special place in my heart and this vn reminded me about why I love my moege and SMEE in general. I had a really fun time with Tropical Poppy!
