It's a fun romcom that delivers nicely on both the romance and the comedy, almost devoid of conflict. Nozomi and Miu's routes are great, with the others ranging from good to ok. Unfortunately, it's riddled with typos and such, but hopefully they'll be addressed in the future. (My playtime is inflated from reporting every single one I found.)
As another VN from SMEE- this felt like 3 steps forward and 2 steps back compared to Making*Lovers (one of my favorite VNs). Not a bad read if you're new to SMEE's brand of wacky rom-com humor, but as someone who loved Making*Lovers, I finished this wanting a bit more. Let's start with the improvements over Making*Lovers. The only reason why I hold Making*lovers in such high regard is solely based on the Karen route, there were 2 routes that were such a slog to read that I gave up half way (namely the Mashiro and Saki route). On the other hand, LOVEPICAL's lows weren't as bad as Making*Lovers' (I'll go over which route I had issues with later on) and the routes were consistently enjoyable. Another thing they did right were the side characters (Ayako and Kuma san) and dorm roomers themselves, the dorm and H&B felt like a tight knit family, rather than the hollow institution that was Ninki Seiyuu's dorm. Lastly, the gimmick of LOVEPICAL are the speech bubbles that appear over the heroine's minds, revealing their thoughts to the readers if clicked on. I felt like this added alot to the immersion without interferring with the overall pacing of the scenes. Now onto the less good. Although many praised the common route for being longer than average and fun to read, sadly this came at the expense of the individual routes' runtimes. You can definitely feel the crunch after each first date as the relationships were given very little time to breath and develop. Especially the routes for the side heroines Tanpopo and Ayako which felt underbaked and left me wishing for more. Huge shout out to DarknessInferno's review, because I would never have known that the scenario writer for SMEE- Hayase Yuu had recently left and went on to make Amanatsu. I personally prefer the Amanatsu approach of having fewer girls if it means each route gets enough time to develop and breathe. My final gripe is that the routes lacked what made the Karen route so great- brilliant chemistry between MCs, seemless pacing, together with a down-to-earth yet original premise. The routes in LOVEPICAL, although less offensive than the worst routes in Making*Lovers, mostly failed to reach the same heights. I'll go over my thoughts for each route so feel free to skip if you haven't read LOVEPICAL yet. Let's go over the side heroines first, Tanpopo and Ayako. Imagine my surprise when SMEE decided to give Tanpopo a promising sub-plot only to resolve it in 10 minutes, I've read H-scenes longer than that. Just goes to show how much potential Tanpopo had. Meanwhile Ayako's route was too short and generic for me to stay invested but I still liked her character as she's the glue that holds H&B together. Next is Tamaki, she's exactly the dilligent hardworking type that we've all encountered in eroges. However, at the end of her route, where her dorm roomers expressed their gratitude towards her and gifted her a new giraffe plushie was a very wholesome way to end her route. Overall, a very endearing and by-the-books character. Now we've reached what I consider the best routes of the game. Miu is our resident tsundere who is also an influencer. Although superficial and self-centered on the surface, she's actually very independent with a work ethic that matches her attitude. Towards the end where we discover that she's a nepo baby that rejected her silver spoon to earn her own fortune and fame made for an admirable conclusion. However, compared to Karen, her chemistry with the MC boils down to clingy co-dependency once their relationship starts. The MC ultimately becomes a horny yes-man that goes with every whim she has, losing alot of their rapport in the common route. Overall, her character was the most charming and indepedent of all the heroines. Another highlight would be Nozomi's route. She's a freaky girl with an equally freaky body. Her confession scene had me in stitches. Due to her lack of self-confidence, she initially relied on corny online articles to attract the attention of the MC. Later on her reverts to back to her authentic self and shows us that shes got a heart of gold underneath all that freakiness. Defintely worthy of being the main girl. Remember when I said I had issues with a certain route? Yeah that would be Suzuka's route. The sheer whiplash I got between common route Suzuka and heroine route Suzuka made me drop the route halfway. Her character moment where she tells the MC to chase his dreams and stop coddling her made me root for her growth, yet all of that is basically undone in her route. She regresses into a selfish, shell of her former self where she legit crashes out when the MC forgets his phone during a week-long practical exam (someone please make this make sense) and hasn't contacted her for days. Worse still is how she makes it everyones' problem and just says ♥♥♥♥ you to independence and growth, combined with how nonchalant everyone reacts to their biologically incestual relationship, made for an absolute trainwreck. All in all, LOVEPICAL is not great not terrible. I still prefer it over Ninki Seiyuu which shares a similar premise. Yet it still pales in comparison to the Karen route and Amanatsu as a whole. Only buy this if you are unfamiliar with SMEE's work as it is consistent and more approachable compared to other SMEE works.
So... let me start this off by saying I'm a big SMEE fan. I love their past work a lot. Fureraba, Making * Lovers, Sugar * Style, Harem Kingdom, they're all gold comedy VN's. That said, I was always aware that after Sugar * Style, SMEE seemed to have lost both their artist and their scenario writer. Now, having read this, the first work without them involved, I can sadly say that my worries were vindicated. The artwork is a half mimicry of their old style, with changes. The faces look similar, clearly meant to emulate the old style's brand identity, but the coloration is vastly different, and the actual posing of the characters is *awful.* I think we're dealing with an artist who can draw well on the surface, but doesn't understand the theoretical side of artistry. All the CG's are *super* awkwardly posed. The loss of the scenario writer is felt the most. The usual "SMEE humour" that's part of their brand is gone. There's a few moments that are kinda quirky like it, but it's an absolute shell of what once was. Having read Amanatsu, which their former scenario writer worked on and 100% feels like you're reading a SMEE title, I'm convinced that man was the core of what made SMEE... well, SMEE. Lovepical-Poppy is inoffensive enough to be a decent read, and the actual characters are all likeable, but that's all it is. There's no clever comedic skits, it's straightforward romance plot from start to finish, and it gets quite boring by the last few hours. By the 4th public swimming pool fluff scene nothing burger, I was very much checked out. Honestly, it feels like a VN from their parent brand Hooksoft.
