What does it cost to actually be among the living, instead of the dead? A beautiful love story drenched in grief, set in the winter who tries to become spring. This is a slow-burn emotional roller-coaster that will make you cry and leave you with a lingering sadness. I picked Hatsuyuki Sakura because it's often considered the magnum opus of Yuu Niijima, the scenario writer, and now I see why. He is so good at writing unhealthy obsession, and the story really hurts. The music also amplifies the atmosphere perfectly. Now I have to go find the soundtrack CD to fill my house with some spirit incense... Almost everyone in the main cast is delightfully quirky and borderline broken. Yet somehow, the chemistry with them works pretty well. Maybe even better than many other gal-games I've played. The relationships between different heroines and their contribution to the main cause also make them feel like real people outside their own routes. The protagonist has a strong personality; definitely not the self-insert type of protagonist. He is rude, threatening, and pushes people away, and the narrative stays very close to his POV with a lot of internal monologues. It will make sense later on though, when you learn his relationship with his own past, and the reading experience gets better. The core themes are vengeance and the true meaning of being "alive". They do get philosophical and spiritual at times, and the plot is filled with mysteries, but I think they're still in accessible territory. While structurally a gal-game with individual character routes, the narrative fits neatly into a central mystery. It feels like a big, coherent structure, rather than a few separate routes that branch out from the main plot toward the character endings. There are long stretches of slice-of-life comedies, but they sometimes come right after the narrative promises you "this is not going to end well", and the comedies becomes rather unsettling. Despite its intense emotional impact, the game does have some noticeable flaws. The worldbuilding left too much unexplained, and why the final branch point affects the plot in that way doesn't make much sense. The pacing of the last few chapters feel rushed; several characters are brought up-to-speed with the problem at hand very quickly, and I think some tension is lost because of that. The h-scenes feature some interesting dialogue that is revealing and fit the chemistry, and the very last one did make me break into tears. Despite that one scene earning its place, the placement of other scenes is so bizarre that I got pulled out of the story several times. It's almost like there's a quota that each heroine needs to have a certain amount of h-scenes. It's narratively safe to skip h-scenes before the 3rd opening movie. Side note: If you plan to read this in Japanese, don't try to learn any spoken Japanese from the protagonist. Almost everything he says is very rude in real life.
A perfect blend of usual Saga planets comedy and sad but not too depressing story. Great contemporary fantasy setting, good for people who love ghost related settings. All the characters are fun and friendship moments are sufficient. Hatsuyuki is a likeable protagonist once you get used to the setting. Common route is good and the hook certainly is there. The OST is great, has some of my favorites.
A somber and bittersweet winter story, steeped in teenage angst. It is presented as an eroge but this is a plot driven story with heavy romantic element. Story is deeply symbolic and (if you accept symbolism) relatable, especially for those who remember how they were as teens. R18 scenes are.....really bad. Anatomy is all over the place and timing feels random, like they were inserted as an afterthought. Its hard to comprehend what this is created by the same people who made Kinkoi. Really, should've just go without, it wouldnt have damaged the story
Pros: - The game has an excellent prologue and sets up the premise very well, with cliffhangers that consistently spark enough curiosity to keep players engaged with the subsequent parts. - 4/5 routes have amazing quality, ranging from great to flawless, it's hardly to complain about anything. - The atmosphere, romance, storyline, plot twists, and more are all meticulously done, with just the right length to avoid feeling dragged out. The background stories are integrated seamlessly, enhancing the narrative without diluting it. - The music is phenomenal, both background tracks and vocal songs. Every appearance of "Freak of Nature" start, its gave me the feeling that i'm travel back to UBW route in FSN. - Sakura’s True End resolves all the major questions raised throughout the game. It's also have a beautiful romantic story. - Kawano Hatsuyuki is a main character with a brilliantly development. Cons: - Nozomu’s route is a weak point, as its quality falls below the overall standard. However, it still has some of pros, especially Sai, a character I initially thought was just a supporting character, has a larger role than my prediction. - The H-scenes feel quite random. Overall: - Despite some cons, I believe they’re forgivable as they don’t significantly affect from the experience. My experience with Hatsusaku is thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. Score: 10/10
Yet another BEAUTIFUL visual novel from Saga Planets, drawn by the talented Hontani Kanae and Toranosuke, with an equally amazing voice cast, but with a TERRIBLY BORING story plot. Seriously. Art: 10/10 Voice cast: 10/10 Plot: 2/10 I managed to finish this one but only because I pushed myself to keep going back to it. The MC is a royal jerk, boring, clueless, and when you finally get the storyline secrets revealed at the end, you no longer care what they are. If I could give this a neutral rating I would.
