Lumines Arise follows in the revered footsteps of Tetris Effect, delivering a hypnotic audiovisual experience to an otherwise humble puzzle masterpiece. Lumines has a lot in common with Tetris. Your first hour will be reactive, often spent frantically searching for somewhere - just ANYWHERE - your piece will fit. But before long you’ll be seeing several moves ahead, setting up larger chains and entering a flow state. And what a flow state it is! The feedback this game offers when everything is going just right is sublime. Every action is perfectly synchronised to the music, and with board clearing being aligned to completed musical measures you will find yourself playing to a rhythm in a way that Tetris Effect doesn’t demand. Because the rhythm of the music directly impacts gameplay, more of your senses are ‘active’ than in Tetris Effect, creating an almost symbiotic link with the gameplay. Pair it with a VR headset and you’ll have an otherworldly ride - but it presents beautifully on a regular display too. So, we’re looking at a puzzle masterpiece, then! If you’re balking at the price then consider this: Lumines is a game you can play for hundreds of hours and still have theory to learn, execution to improve, and challenges to complete. It’s a game that can swallow an entire evening or fill a convenient ten-minute gap (Steam Deck support is excellent, by the way). This is a game you could still be booting up years from now - so what, exactly, is a fair price? If I had to criticise Lumines Arise, I’d say that the multiplayer is rather barebones. In particular, I would love to see a co-op mode similar to Tetris Effect. There’s no motivator like teamwork, and that co-op mode is responsible for several of my mates becoming Tetris fans themselves. The single-player offering here is rich, which just goes to make multiplayer feel even more like an afterthought. In summary, if you’re someone easily moved by impressive visuals and proudly OTT pop epics, someone who is hungry for games that feel like learning a rewarding hobby instead of merely filling time, then Lumines Arise is the game you’re after.
Enhance and Hydelic have done it again. If you loved Tetris Effect's music and overall aesthetic, stop reading now and get this game. It's everything you could've asked for, and more. Unlike Tetris Effect, Lumines Arise's audio and music are much more dynamic then before. The game will add in new samples and begin song progression sooner if you're building up a combo. What does this mean? Pure dopamine highs as songs constantly build up as you keep going. No other game handles music as satisfying as this - this is unmatched; the world's best. As for the gameplay itself, Lumines Arise was pretty easy to pick up. The tutorial covers all the bases you need to know. If that isn't enough, you can always turn on "no-stress" mode at no penalty to yourself. You'll still progress the game, earn achievements, and the like - but you'll miss out on leaderboards. And how could I forget about the Burst mechanic? The timeline stops clearing blocks, allowing you to fill one giant block. As you go, it'll move the other color out of the way.. letting you build up to a giant burst... and then the other colors rain back down, effectively giving you two giant bursts. Infinitely satisfying. I can't recommend this game enough! VR, desktop, Steam Deck... the game is beautiful across all modes of play! And yes, the OST releases sometime in February.
Lumines Arise is Enhance doing the exact same thing they did with Tetris Effect but with their own puzzle game formula instead. It's a trippy, 3D shot in the arm of audiovisual adrenaline and is just as addictive as it is challenging. Besides a pretty useless Deluxe Edition, it's a rare instance of a modern game where the price tag is right and there's so little inside the game to try and unnecessarily waste your time or give you FOMO. Enhance set out and easily accomplished making a wholesome experience that is super well made and tons of fun. Buy it if you love video games
It's a triumphant return to Lumines that builds upon Tetris Effect's amazing attention to sound, visuals, and incredible knack of style, but it does come at one caveat - the actual input latency / controlling of the blocks feels significantly less tight than the original Lumines or even Tetris Effect. I feel like I can stomach that for the sake of experiencing a genuinely jaw-dropping set of spectacular levels and motifs, so if anything, that just speaks to how entrancing of an experience this is that such a huge flaw can't tank my enjoyment of it. (It is something I hope they improve on in future patches though...)
