What a charming and enjoyable experience. This game is definitely worth checking out on your Steam Deck. Though the platforming and combat is pretty simple for the most part, this game will continue to surprise you in so many ways. The Pixel Art is beautiful, the music is Great and it's just an all around charming and fun experience, however, I do think it'd be wise to read through this whole review to understand what you're getting with this game. Well, first, let's start off with the controls. The controls are VERY simple. You can walk, you can jump...the jump is actually a bit more complex than everything else. You can just jump on an enemy and then have a double jump, OR, you can press the jump button right as you're jumping on the enemy and gain more height in your jump (and also have a double jump). This is actually an important mechanic later in the game, so make sure you get comfortable with pulling it off. You can shoot a star out of your wand that either paralyzes an enemy (so you can jump on them) or destroys them (it depends on the enemy), AND lastly, you can run by holding down the star shooting button, and that's pretty much it. The controls don't ever get any more complicated than that. With that said, the game will demand that you run, jump, shoot while in the air, and then run again, so the simple controls are a lot of fun, and bring a bit of challenge, especially when you play in flow state. With that said, the hit boxes on enemies are a little clunky. It's best to just try and aim for the middle of their head when jumping, always. Also, there is one enemy where when you paralyze it, it doesn't stop that enemy from electrocuting you, so be warned. It's feels a little jank, but I think it's intended. Next up, the Hub world. The hub world is HUGE, and reminiscent of games like Mario3/Zelda LttP, but it's as deep as a puddle unfortunately. Still, a lot of love went into it, and you can tell. Okay, so in the hub world you'll find Levels The levels in this game are like Mario 3 where it says you're in _ of 5. So there's 4 levels in that area until you get to the boss which would be level 5 of 5. Red and white enemies that look like Hornet from Hollow Knight. These are little challenges that reward you with money at the end. The Towers, which are timed gauntlets that reward you with a special prize at the end (purple ticket, big nosed fuzzy bois, heart pieces etc. You can't rewin any of the prizes, so no worries about getting duplicates of something. Every run you complet scores you something new. Beat the gauntlet multiple times, get all the prizes and then move on. There's little save stations, but I don't understand these as it looks like the game autosaves, so I'm confused with that. There's fast travel stones later on in the game. There's mini bosses, and I think that's it. Okay here's where the SPOILERS start. so...(SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS) So for those done reading here: As a whole, Mago is was a great experience and I'm glad I decided to play it. It does have a little bit of jank with some of the hit boxes, but that didn't ever deter me from wanting to keep playing this absolutely charming game. I highly recommend trying this game for yourself. The first handful of levels are really easy, but the difficulty does increase in the platforming later on. You'll be laughing at it at first, but then you'll be humbled lol. The collectibles in this game are GREAT, and plentiful. You have a ridiculous amount of costumes, with cameo appearances from other games like One Shot. You also have 6 wands to unlock. There's actually quite a bit of collectibles for you to find, and when I say find, I mean it. There are little fairies playing music, and when you see that, you know there's a secret nearby. So make sure to shoot the walls, or feel comfortable falling in an area you'd usually die at to see if there's a secret awaiting you. I think the game could have done a better job at explaining what these collectibles are, but I'm guessing that the game just wants you to figure that out by experimenting and using observation. With that said, you will be confused, questioning why collecting any of these are important, but I'll break it down here: The purple tickets open new costumes to buy. The blue ticket is opens up new wands to buy. (the wand shop is in the house with the S music note. The blue orbs within a heart are pieces of heart that increase your health once you get enough of them, kinda like Zelda. The little big nosed fuzzy bois are given to the the BIG big nosed fuzzy king in town. He gives you things like purple tickets, blue tickets and heart pieces for giving him enough of the fuzzy bois. The donut and hamburger give you back a bit of life that you lost. The currency in this game is those blue orbs, moons and star, and they're usually placed in charming happy faces all around. Quite charming. Then there's the fun little Celeste like levels where you run away from yourself. Those levels (which you probably won't find until the end of the game. That's how it worked for me). have you collecting books, but first you get a skeleton key to open up an obvious place in town. And lastly the SPECIAL blue orb with a moon around it..honestly I still don't know what these do. Still gotta collect more I guess, but I'm only 78% done in the game, and that counts beating the final boss. This game is pretty darn big. There's apparently 102% completion as of this review. Now that the collectibles are out of the way, let's talk bosses. It's a mixed bag. You're gonna probably hate waiting around for some of these bosses, especially the first time you go against them. There's a LOT of just waiting for the weak spot to appear with some of these bosses, and sometimes you have to wait a VERY LONG TIME before that weak spot shows up. Some of the other bosses are fine, as you can always find an opportunity to land a hit, and I like those better. These bosses are not complicated either. They have a very cut and dry pattern to them, very stiff. I wouldn't say that the bosses are the highlight of the game, but after beating all of them, and then doing it again, I'd say the experience becomes more enjoyable once you understand what you're getting. With that said, one of the reasons that this game is SO good is because of the: Mini Games! OMG, there are so many fun mini games in this game. It's so GREAT! There's the The Bird Run, The Penguin Snowboarding The Mech Suit The Mini Tank Volleyball Dino run The Schmup fight OH MAN, it's just so GOOD :D As a whole, Mago is was a great experience and I'm glad I decided to play it.
