First of all, this is not a cafe management sim, while it has small amounts of gameplay, it's mostly a visual novel. I really like the art, but the main selling point is the fully voice acted main cast, especially if you look at the actresses behind them. The story is allright, nothing too special, and the gameplay became cumbersome in the end, so I was a bit torn about it overall. This really didn't motivate me to collect things or try for different endings. Still, with a bit of bias, I can recommended it, probably on sale.

Despite its charming pixel art presentation and supremely talented Japanese VAs, Maid Café on Electric Street doesn't have nearly enough staying power to stick its landing. It's regrettable because the game tried to do well at both ADV and sim game mechanics but ended up excelling at neither. The game's premise is enjoyable at first, but soon enough I've noticed that the restaurant management mechanics doesn't have a lot of depth to make it interesting. There's an objective to earn certain amount of revenue within a time period, but this is pretty much on-rail and I don't think we can actually fail at this task. The free time we have in the evening after work is finished is also largely uneventful, apart from the mandatory plot progression events (and for earning extra cash on the side). Not to mention the collectibles featuring seminal works across all Japanese media, --both real and imitation--does not feel as rewarding as it supposed to be. Unfortunately, the only saving grace of the game is the charming pixel art and heroines that comes alive because of their VA talents. It's quite amazing that PLAYISM can pull these kinds of talent for a relatively small indie game. The multitude of visual references to various Japanese media over the years (including prominent indie games) doesn't go unappreciated, but ultimately the game feels incomplete at best.

A wonderful game to settle down with of an evening - a richly woven world with a high level of detail and charm, with memorable characters. Unlike other maid based games, it actually makes you care about what is going on and the story progresses naturally without much brain power required, but still has depth. A lot of maid games follow a familiar format, you inherit a cafe or some other establishment and its your job to rescue it from financial ruin, but this game makes that whole familiar theme feel fresh with engaging gameplay elements and story with humour and emotion. Don't buy this if you want a graphics card tester, you are in for a retro 16 bit treat with this one, which takes me right back to being a kid and playing the Game Boy. The game has challenge, but just the right amount of hand holding not to be intrusive but also not to make mission failures catastrophic - the overall difficulty level is perfect for a casual game. This is one of the few games I will ever buy that I will probably see through to the end, and when funds allow I'll definitely buy the soundtrack! The English translation from Japanese is perfect and the inclusion of Japanese voice over is a nice addition. This game has a niche audience and in my opinion excels where you'd expect other niche games (especially the french maid genre) to fall down, with shallow gameplay and story, but it is worth every penny. Even though I spent £30 on Custom Maid 3D2 a while back - I'd rather play this!

"Maid Cafe on Electric Street is a story-focused adventure game where you enjoy daily life at Fuwa Fuwa Cafe" This is an accurate representation for what this game actually is. It feels like it should be more a management sim or Coffee Talk like, but it really doesn't lean into those genres fully. Management is more or less automatic, and Coffee Talk aspect is kinda harsh if you don't already know the recipe book to get. As it is, it feels like it wants to be a simulation game, but it is shackled into being a glorified Visual Novel. The characters are charming and the aesthetic is very well executed. The voice work is great addition even though they could've just used a generic 8-bit sfx. If there were to be a sequel, or similar project by this team, focus on one core aspect of gameplay. Either lean into the tavern/inn management sim aspects more (e.g. actually having to pay for stuff while managing rent/debt) or into the bartender sim aspects by giving a great diversity of ingredients for the player to involve themselves. A comfort game which does what it says but not quite what's on the tin. It doesn't really push any new concepts as a game but for it's price it doesn't need to. I recommend Maid Cafe on Electric Street if you want a game which is cozy, but otherwise games within the same price bracket would offer greater experiences.
