To be honest the original was better. The incompetence of the heroes in this game is staggering, They tried to make improvements with the party system but it falls short given the sheer ineptitude of the NPCs. Heroes will walk past a group of weak enemies actively tearing down their guild. The AI in the first game would specifically defend their home when it was attacked. Overall its not terrible just disappointing to see a step backwards in such an important area.

First things first: I've paid for the game. With that out of the way, time for a review. I like this game a lot, though it is very difficult. It took me time to realise that the main skills required is crisis management and being level headed - only after these two there's economy management and strategy. Understanding this is important for two reasons: Without this realisation, the default approach will make you fail a lot and get frustrated. Secondly, this game is not for people who can't mange a crisis or easily get upset. The game is fun, graphics are old, but they've aged much better than a lot of other 3d games of its time. There's quite some humour as well, so the game will make you smile too :) There are some hiccups when it comes to interface, but nothing making your life harder. There's this "bug" where game creators assumed 60 fps is going to be the absolute maximum framerate for the lifetime of the game and some tick events are based on fps and not time flow, so you have to manually set a max framerate for this game to 60, otherwise your buildings take longer to build and the game gets harder (don't go below 60, it doesn't make the game easier ;) ) I didn't finish the game yet, but I'm looking forward to it and then there are 3 DLCs that I will gladly play. That said, I recommend this game with the single caveat I've mentioned at the beginning of this review.

I am not one for writing reviews, even more so for a game that came out in 2009. But after picking this up on sale and diving in, already sceptical from other reviews I had read that this would be a buggy, unbeatable game. I have the following to say:- During my time with this game thus far I have yet to encounter a bug that has caused the game to be unbeatable (currently about 3/4th the way through the campaign). What I have found though is that this game is extremely unforgiving in the early game. You should expect to be restarting several times to refine your early game strategy to even survive the first 3-5 minutes of any mission. Personally, have enjoyed the challenge of this game along with the unique blend of a base building RTS with hero management akin to an auto-battler. The brutal early game has caught me out so many times but with each restart I needed to adjust my strategy to survive, it only made the feeling of finally achieving a critical mass and stabilising even more rewarding. Once you have stabilised from the early game you start snowballing hard into the late game. I would say that almost all the difficulty of this game is that initial early game phase, it is very hard to lose once you have hit that critical mass of heroes and upgrades. From my experience the main factors I have usually needed to figure out to be able to survive the early game and progress into the mid / late game, have been the following: [*]What buildings to get down with your limited starting gold [*] (The equally important) Where to place them to avoid their destruction before they are built. [*]What heroes and upgrades to focus down to survive your first few waves of monsters (Likely dictated by your choice of building). To address some of the points that I had read in other reviews prior to playing this game: Buildings - They build agonisingly slow, “it’s not a bug it’s a feature” it really hammers home the lack of breathing room the game gives you at the start of missions on any difficulty rating above novice (which is basically every mission outside the 2 tutorials). You do not have the luxury of taking your time in the early game here, it is do or die. Monsters - They spawn / attack you almost instantly but you do have time to get a hero building and a tower or two down in most if not all missions, in the few I have struggled to do so, I have ended up using the mage tower due to its ability to self-build (making it the fastest building to build in the game) and self-repair (making it able tank 4-5 early game monsters if need be). There are indestructible monster spawning buildings that appear in your base from certain triggers, they can quite easily doom a run if you are not careful: [*]Graveyards - only spawns when a hero dies (always best to avoid this early on) [*]Sewers and whatever those pipe things are - seem to be triggered off the number of building you have so avoid spamming out 5 towers early on if you are not ready for them. Honestly, it really does suck to see all those who have given up on this game due to its unforgiving borderline unfair early game. It is such a unique game, even with its rough edges. For those with this just gathering dust in your steam library; I hope my above ramblings may convince you to give this game a second chance that I believe it deserves. Finally, for those who are still on the fence, for the price I bought it (2.99 on sale at time of review) I would recommend giving this a go if you are the least bit interested in it, even more so if you like the idea of having to problem solve the early game strategy though repetition.

Great game that channels the same energy and comedic storytelling from the first one. It was completely unbeatable after the first few tutorial missions when I first played, but I researched and read that alot of players had the same problem, and, apparently, the game's difficulty is tied to players' FPS. Why? Not a clue. But as soon as I capped my FPS to 50, I was able to beat almost everything (I've still got the last like 3 levels to go). Easy fix, even if strange and annoying that you even have to do it. But, I'd still recommend. As long as you cap your FPS.

Writing this purely because of all the noobs stating "unplayable because of difficulty" - no it is not. Is it hard? Yes. Do different maps require different strats? Yes. Some require you to turtle/level up and then go for dens, other make you go for dens right away. I beat this game multiple times and still come back every so often to beat it again because it is quite unique. If you enjoy a challenge where strategy and thought is important because YOU are not the one beating things you have to encourage your heroes to do so - then play this. It's old but I still remember it fondly and would, in a heart beat, play a sequel.
