Mandemon is a supernatural mystery visual novel developed and published by 致意 that blends psychological suspense with folklore-inspired horror. Set against the backdrop of modern Japan, the story draws players into a disturbing series of unexplained events connected to a mysterious entity known as Mandemon. What begins as an unsettling urban legend gradually develops into an emotionally charged investigation where hidden truths, fractured relationships, and terrifying revelations emerge with every decision. Instead of relying on conventional horror through constant jump scares or action sequences, the game builds fear through uncertainty, allowing its narrative to create an atmosphere that lingers long after each chapter ends. The game's strongest quality is its storytelling. Every conversation and scene is carefully paced to reveal new pieces of the mystery without giving away too much too soon. Players are encouraged to observe details, question each character's intentions, and consider how every choice might influence future events. The branching narrative is more than a collection of alternate endings; each route provides unique insights that expand the larger story. By exploring multiple outcomes, players gradually uncover hidden motivations and discover how seemingly unrelated events are woven together into a satisfying overarching mystery. This structure gives replayability genuine value rather than making it feel like a repetitive exercise. Mandemon also benefits from a cast that feels layered and believable. The characters are more than simple participants in a supernatural incident, as each has personal fears, emotional conflicts, and secrets that influence the unfolding narrative. Their interactions often blur the line between trust and suspicion, making it difficult to determine who is genuinely trying to help and who may be concealing dangerous truths. This uncertainty keeps the tension high throughout the story and gives emotional weight to many of the game's key moments. Rather than presenting clear-cut heroes and villains, the narrative embraces moral complexity, allowing players to draw their own conclusions as events unfold. One of the game's most practical features is its branching route management system. The included flowchart makes revisiting important decisions straightforward, allowing players to return to specific moments without replaying the entire story from the beginning. Since much of the complete narrative is revealed across multiple endings, this feature significantly improves the overall experience by reducing unnecessary repetition. Completionists and visual novel fans will appreciate how the system encourages exploration while respecting the player's time. Visually, Mandemon presents an appealing anime-inspired art style enhanced by expressive Live2D character animation. Character portraits display subtle movements and facial expressions that make conversations feel more engaging, while detailed backgrounds establish a constant sense of unease. Whether depicting quiet streets, dimly lit buildings, or isolated interiors, the environments reinforce the game's themes of mystery and psychological tension. The horror is communicated more through atmosphere than graphic imagery, allowing the visual presentation to maintain suspense without excessive reliance on gore. The audio design complements the visuals exceptionally well. Soft ambient sounds, restrained musical compositions, and carefully timed moments of silence work together to heighten anticipation during critical scenes. Instead of overwhelming players with dramatic music, the soundtrack emphasizes emotional storytelling and creeping dread. This measured approach helps every revelation and emotional confrontation feel more impactful, creating a cohesive audiovisual experience that strengthens the game's immersive qualities. As expected from a visual novel, gameplay primarily revolves around reading, making choices, and exploring different narrative paths. Those looking for action-oriented mechanics or extensive puzzle-solving may find the experience relatively simple, but players who enjoy story-focused adventures will likely appreciate its emphasis on writing and character development. The multiple endings, meaningful decisions, and accessible route navigation ensure there is enough variety to keep dedicated readers engaged through several playthroughs. The game's deliberate pacing may not appeal to everyone. Some sections spend considerable time establishing characters and building suspense before major revelations occur, which can feel slow for players expecting immediate excitement. Likewise, understanding the full scope of the mystery requires completing multiple routes, meaning the first ending may leave several questions unanswered. However, these design choices ultimately support the game's layered storytelling and encourage deeper engagement with its narrative. Overall, Mandemon delivers a compelling supernatural visual novel that succeeds through its intricate mystery, emotionally driven characters, and immersive atmosphere. Its thoughtful branching structure, polished presentation, and strong focus on psychological suspense create an experience that rewards curiosity and careful attention. While its slower pacing and text-heavy gameplay naturally cater to fans of the genre, those willing to invest in its multiple story routes will discover a memorable and satisfying mystery that steadily reveals its secrets from beginning to end. Mandemon is an excellent narrative-driven visual novel that combines supernatural intrigue, emotional storytelling, and effective replay value into a polished package. Its engaging mystery, attractive presentation, and well-designed branching narrative make it a rewarding experience for players who appreciate atmospheric storytelling and carefully constructed psychological suspense. This game made me question my ego by getting obsessed with Hayase Honestly, this plot bored me as hell bro, but I must say that it has an interesting twist which made it more interesting. The characters are easily forgettable not you Hayase and Kakitsubata <3 and something that I didn't like was the (at least from my perspective) the forced "romantic" situations between Satomi and Ruriko, besides that, it's a nice game, sadly it has fame of supposedly AI use but I think this is one very sad case where the devs used a specific drawing style (for characters) before AI used it for generating that style we all know nowadays. Not to mention that this game was made in 2023 and generating anime AI pictures got massive in 2025. Will I replay it again? probably not, to me it's a nice game with no replayability due to stuff I mentioned before.
