Master of Command is the (sortof) Empire Total War spiritual successor everyone has been waiting for wrapped in a roguelite campaign and injected with copious amounts of unit customization. Resulting in historical RTS crack that will give you that "one more turn" feeling despite being completely realtime. I will now go into a slightly more in depth analysis of the various game mechanics, making frequent comparisons to Empire Total War. As although MoC and TW are technically different genres... the comparison is inevitable and makes for a good standard to compare against. BATTLE LAYER GAMEPLAY: Anyone who's played a total war game will instantly be familiar with what to expect here. However several considerable improvements have been made here. Firstly the AI is a cut above Total War. I wouldnt say it's human-like or even the best in the genre, but I would describe it as competent and capable. With the right difficulty modifiers it has even managed to defeat me a few times. The diversity of units and equipment brings alot a variety and interest to the table. Terrain matters alot more here aswell. Proper use of it can decide a battle. Finally your troops formation actually really matters in MoC. Flanking fire is devastating. Wide, thin lines maximize firepower but are slow and cumbersome to maneuver and lower your men's morale. Deeper formations can move more quickly and improve your unit's morale but can't dish out much fire damage and are susceptible to fire themselves. Due to this you'll often find yourself marching into position in columns to take advantageous ground rapidly before deploying into firing lines or forming attack columns for effective charges... you know like how they actually did IRL. CAMPAIGN LAYER GAMEPLAY: Here's where the big changes start to occur. In MoC the campaign is split into 3 acts. At the beginning of each act you pick a region to campaign in and your army is then dropped into a procedurally generated regional map. You will then take your army exploring this region. Completing objectives, resolving various random events/encounters, and fighting small patrols until you have to facedown a massive enemy "boss" army that will result in a campaign end if you lose. Note that I said army and not armies. Unlike TW games you control a single army of up to 20 units divided into 5 divisions each with a unique officer. However you start the campaign with just a few recruit units that you will upgrade and expand into a mighty host. As noted you can upgrade units into more elite varieties through a Mount and Blade style unit trees. You can also however equip each unit with items and weapons that will alter their stats. We're talking everything from weapons, to chaplins, to special food rations, to canteens and boots here. Some of these items will even have presentation changes in battles. You equip a cavalry regiment with special horses and the horse models will be switched to that breed of horse ingame. If you attach musicians to an infantry unit and you'll start hearing them play fifes or bagpipes as they march around inbattle. This brings me to MoC's biggest draw for me - unit customization. Buttons, coat facings, pants, stupid little hat decorations, unit names, flags. YOU CAN CUSTOMIZE IT ALL!!! It will all appear inbattle. It really makes you get attached to your units and get to know them in a way you never really can in a Total War title. PRESENTATION & APPEARANCE: I would describe this as being perfectly serviceable and not much more. The game has pretty simple although pleasant graphics and nice hand-drawn artwork for events. Clearly the devs were more focused on gameplay here. However the presentation is elevated by alot of the previously mentioned customization and solid sound design and music. IN SUMMATION: Master of Command is a very well executed game in a genre that desperately needs more attention. For a 3 man team it has completely blown my expectations away. At 30 Yeehaw doubloons I find it very hard to justify passing this game up if you like RTS games. Furthermore the devs have announced they game has been very successful for them so far and that they will be adding new content and continuing to improve what is already here. So it is only going to get better from here on out. 4.5/5

Love this game. It is reasonably difficult, yet very satisfying to succeed in. Who did not fail their first campaign is lying. Love the way your army grows and matures through the campaign, you can customize your units appearance, their flags etc. The campaign map is something completely different from what we are used to with Total War series and I believe it is good thing. Campaigns really feel like you are commanding an army through limited war campaign. Your consequences matter a lot. You sacrifice your unit in stupid charge? Unit shatters and is lost. No second chances. You want your units to survive? Take care of them, make sure to support each other. There is so much I would love to say, please buy it. We need more games like this one. disclosure: I have 54hrs in this game now, as I was volunteer playtester. My access to the game was revoked on release date, so I ended up buying it just like everyone else :-)

An amazing game with an amazing dev team. Ive been following Griff and master of command since mid 2024. If their was ever a dev to listen to critisism and change things based off what players want its him. The game is amazingly fun and enjoyable with good replay value also

This is genuinely one of the finest examples of modern real-time strategy in the blackpowder age. I highly and sincerely recommend it. Thank you Griffin, for both this excellent game, and for allowing me to assist with this project. Thank you.
