This is a competent, modern version of a true-to-the-bone classic. There is some sparkle and some nice quality of life in place, but the meat of the game is mechanically recognizably the same as the legend itself. Do you like Civilization? Do you think that researching The Wheel is kinda boring and would rather be putting your research toward something like Summon Demon or Kill Things With Fire? Let's go, then!

The bottom line: I've been playing the OG MoM for 30 years. For many of them I had hoped for a remake and in 2022 that became a reality. This game does what I wanted the developer to do, add some quality of life and balance improvements to the game and slap a new coat of paint on it. Just do to Master of Magic what has been done for decades to Madden, FIFA, or w/e sportsball game you're familiar with. That 'is' what they did I just happen to think they did a $20 job, not a $50 job. I do recommend it (and its predecessor) but not at full price. It feels silly to complain about the graphics and presentation of this game in contrast to what came before it 28 years earlier... but I don't like how the buildings look in the combat screen and I find odd that my familiar is animated during a summoning sequence but my Wizard is represented by a floating framed painting and the creature being summoned comes into view almost like a developing Polaroid photograph upon a scroll background instead of rising from the summoning circle. These are minor complaints, admittedly, but they do kind of crunch the vibe in an underwhelming way. The presentation of the "Enchant an Item" spell also leaves something to be desired in contrast to the OG, but they do convey more, and more accurate information than previously (the game didn't use to tell you that platemail, chainmail and shields had inherent and beneficial characteristics beyond what you enchanted them with). There's things I like too, the Over World looks gorgeous. The town map is pleasant. You can track more than your opponents' "Army Strength, Magic Power & Research", to get a sense at how you're stacking up. Paladins commanded by a Warlord and under a Crusade spell are still very strong, the music was well done, including the updated classic themes. The art direction is ok, it reminds me a bit of Pathfinder 1e, especially the Halfling Slinger unit. You don't have to go into settings to decide between tactical battles and strategically resolved outcomes you can decide at the start of each fight to conduct the battle yourself or let the AI do it in the background and you can decide if you want to give them access to your mana to improve your chances by casting spells on your behalf. And like before once in the battle you can turn it over to the AI and retake control for yourself at any time. For 'sure things' or close to, the AI is just fine, but a human player can make more of a difference in a more even match up or an unfavourable mismatch. The way the battle screen loads is a nice touch, you magic mirror swirls and then the camera moves through the frame to expand the screen for the battle map. At any rate. When it's all said and done, you get the classic Fantasy 4X Strategy Game that managed to successfully blend the best of Civilisation with the best of Magic: The Gathering, now with contemporary flourishes. Given the presentation and graphics, they're asking for more than the game's worth outside of a sale event.

I've been pretty disappointed with video game remakes in the past. Not this time, in fact I'd say it's the best remake. Why? 1. It keeps the original mechanics of the game. 2. It has lots new mechanics that are OPTIONAL. But I've tried four different optional updates, including the 2 DLCs, and I gotta say, I loved them and felt they blended in seamlessly. 3. Allows workshop content. 4. Not buggy.

I'm so glad this remake was at least done properly. Planar Conquest (and whatever it was called before they changed the name) had a cool concept, but still didn't do the mechanics or aesthetics justice. This version's not stupendous either. It's slower that I think a game like this ought to be, and can be glitchy at times (a simple reset fixes it). But the fact that it's moddable makes a huge difference. A lot of other people who love the game as much or more than I do have put a lot of time into making some absolutely great mods that you should definitely check out. Plus there have been enough free updates and some DLC that can make it feel like a whole new game. And yeah, the AI isn't good. But I think that makes the game more approachable to people who haven't played the original, because it makes easy mode basically winnable for children of all ages. And as I write this, there's a 60% off sale -- you really should pick it up at that price, even if you're on the fence about it. Oh and 1 last thing, if you ever played Age of Empires or Caster of Magic (I think there maybe another one I'm forgetting), don't go into this game thinking it's a remake of those, because it is not. It is its own amazing game.

Good remake. Unfortunately the developers abandoned it completely. There are many obvious bugs and issues that seem simple to fix. Still, quite fun and looks good.
