Medieval: Total War™ - Collection,For nostalgia6/10 Medieval: Total War is one of those strategic game, where the aim is to conquer the world. It has the dated charm of the 00's and lacks the impressive graphics of later Total War games, but it is my contention that this game is a great one in its own right. One might think that the only reason to get the game is for nostalgia's sake. And there is no denying that a significant percentage of the purchases will probably come from old players. The advantage of this copy compared to the old one that you might still own is that it is now compatible with modern operating systems (I personally tested Windows 7 and 10). Moreover, the price tag is quite reasonable. The game is 13 years old and the graphics are no longer up to today's standards. They still have a certain charm to them and it does not prevent having fun at all. In addition, the game offers 4 different campaigns - 3 European ones, set at different starting dates and a viking campaign set in the British Isles, which allows considerable replayability. However, the game is much more than just a means to satiate your nostalgia, which is why I spent hundreds of hours playing it in the first place, more than ten years ago. The game is different from all Total War games that would follow (only bearing resemblance to its predecessor Shogun), mainly regarding the campaign map. It uses a Risk-like campaign map, which means that movement is much more restrained. This allows for totally different campaign dynamics and really gives a fresh feel to the campaign, at least for Total War veterans who are not used to this campaign-style. One of the main advantages of this system is that it is much simpler and the AI can therefore cope with it significantly better than with the totally open campaign of later iterations. This makes the campaign both fun and challenging, as defeat becomes a very real possibility.

This game has been part of my life for about 20 years. It still outmatches many modern day strategy games. Some things have not aged well, it is true, some units are based on legends rather than history. Some automatic results make no sense. The AI sometimes makes strategic or tactical blunders. But I find the issues above to be minor ones. The aspects of grand strategy and tactics that you can explore are a lot of fun. The music is one of the best in any game I have ever played. I will probably play this game until the day I die!

Along with the first Shogun - the only enjoyable game in the series. Some of the mechanics maybe didn't age that well, but battles here, ironically, are more interesting and feel better than in all other games in the series People say, medieval 2 is best.. Don't know, controlling formations, especially cavalry feels weird and clunky there, and I think that global map interactions are better here, than there. Here you just move troops from province to province. Simple enough, good enough. In other games you move real distance for armies regardless of province
