It is a nice diggin (err melting) game. but it has two fatal flaws: 1. you got only two tools (well 3 but the third one doesn't really count), and as soon as you unlocked the second one, tesla, the first one is never used again as all future walls can only be melted by the tesla. This is very early in the game, and the tesla is way worse than the first tool, at least until you upgraded it very much - but it's upgrades cost a multitude of the first gun upgrades. 2. you do not really get substantial better items to sell further in. A bit better, yes, but not enough for the tesla upgrade costs. One run before you have to return will give you around $700 even after quite a few tesla upgrades while an upgrade costs 15k or more. Those two things combined mean that as soon as you get the new gun, where you first think "yay I'm sure this is way faster", everything grinds to a crawl and you're slower than you were in the beginning. For that issue and some confusing level design later on (the level design would be fine, the ways to the selling/refueling stations are a bit too hard but I like how you can get shortcuts, but without a map it's hard to keep track) the game falls way below where it could be. I still enjoyed it, but get it on a sale.
Eh I played it, there's not much to it I'd neutral if there was that option. Story is non-existant, freezes & stutters on saving, known bug where your gun stops working if you freeze to death requiring you to reboot the game. Get it on deep discount and bring a good audiobook to listen to while you play.
This is one of those games that would deserve a "Meh" rating if Steam had it. It's a decent game that provides about 6 hours of content for $7. Not terribly priced, though I would recommend getting it on sale if you want it. Meltopia takes the simple digging concept from games like "A Game About Digging a Hole" but instead of digging down, you're digging outward, and instead of dirt, it's snow and ice. You have a freakin' flamethrower and a couple other tools that you can upgrade using money obtained from salvaging items from the melted snow and treasure chests. The whole map is pretty neatly connected with shortcuts that can be opened and a minecart that you can use for Fast Travel. It's all done decently well and is an enjoyable experience, though it's not without its flaws. It's got some bugs here and there, though most can be fixed with a simple save and reload. The save and autosave time is atrocious , the whole game freezes completely for about 5-10 seconds every time. You can tell that this was a translation job in some of the text (I think the devs are Russian?), like sometimes your flamethrower's fuel is referred to as "Fuel" and sometimes as "Energy". Random parkour bits are thrown in throughout and like 80% of them can be skipped or cheesed with the infinite-use grappling hook that you practically start the game with . And all of the cutscenes have this weird vibe to them? It's hard to explain, but they feel like... like those fake mobile game ads? If you watch the trailer on the store page you might get it. All in all, it's a "meh" game that can be a decent way to burn a few hours. According to the in-game text on their recently added "Endless Mode", we can probably also expect Co-op at some point? If it works well and they patch some of the remaining bugs, that could be a good reason to bump my review up to a proper "recommend".
