One of the most realistic WWII strategy game I have ever played, and it completely pulled me into the battles. The missions ranged from small-scale “special unit” objectives to massive, full scale wars, and the game gave you the freedom to approach both in different ways. What really stood out was the ability to micromanage individual soldiers. Every unit has a unique name, an inventory, and limited ammo, which forces you to think more tactically. Running out of bullets mid fight isn’t uncommon, and scavenging enemy weapons or supplies after a battle becomes an essential part of survival. The campaign itself is tough but rewarding. You can’t just stick to one strategy the game constantly pushes you to adapt, rethink, and experiment with new tactics. Even now, over a decade later, it still holds up surprisingly well. Sure, some aspects like the voice acting and presentation feel dated, but the depth of the gameplay makes that easy to overlook. Another highlight is the map editor and mod support. The editor lets you create your own scenarios, while the modding community has kept the game alive with new content and balance tweaks for years. That longevity is a big reason why this game still has such a dedicated following. Overall, it may not be the smoothest or most modern experience today, but if you’re looking for a WWII strategy game that combines realism, challenge, and creativity, this one is absolutely worth revisiting.

You don’t play Men of War you micromanage it like a sweaty stage dad at a middle school play. Every bullet matters, every grenade is a moral decision, and every soldier has the survival instinct of a drunk pigeon unless you babysit them.

A digital battlefield where chaos reigns, yes—but also a strange sense of peace settles in the moments between gunfire. I remember the missions not like levels, but like old stories. The town square we defended until everything ran out. That tank we hijacked with two soldiers and pure desperation. The time my friend and I laughed so hard we forgot we were losing. The game is janky, sure. Rough and stubborn. But once you lean into its rhythm, it gives you something very few games ever offer: weight. Not just tactical depth, but emotional memory. We weren’t just commanding units—we were surviving with them. Carrying ammo between foxholes. Dragging the wounded out of mortar fire. Watching entire squads fall silent in an instant, and somehow continuing. And even in its smallest moments, Men of War showes respect for the history behind it all. The silence after victory. The ruins left behind. The human cost that strategy games usually gloss over. It’s not clean. It’s not polished. But I’ve never forgotten the feeling this game gave me. I don’t think I ever will. If you have someone to play it with, and a bit of patience, Men of War becomes more than a game. It becomes a memory.

Fantastic game, a must for any WW2 lovers, do yourself a favor, get the game and download the Dynamic Campaign Generator. It turns this game into an epic campaign spanning the Sino-Russian war to Korea. Play as Germans, Italians, Russians, US, Brits, Poland, and Japan. The DCG also helps with the fact that the base game doesn't have AI skirmish maps, this mod will allow to play games against the computer.

Gotta be one of my favourite RTS games of all time. The missions are challenging and the horrible voice acting is so memorable. If you like this game then you should definitely play Red Tide as well.
