Men of War: Assault Squad is a meticulously crafted real-time tactics game that plunges players into the intense and gritty battles of World War II with an impressive level of detail and strategic depth. Developed by Digitalmindsoft and published by 1C Company, this title is both a standalone expansion and a significant evolution of the Men of War series. It appeals strongly to fans of tactical warfare simulations, offering a complex blend of squad-based combat, realistic ballistics, and diverse mission objectives that emphasize thoughtful planning over mindless action. The gameplay of Assault Squad centers on controlling squads of soldiers, vehicles, and support units across varied battlefields representing different theaters of World War II. What sets this game apart from many RTS titles is its focus on tactical realism. Every soldier has an individual health pool and can be given specific commands such as taking cover, throwing grenades, or manning vehicles. The ability to directly control any unit on the battlefield brings a level of immersion and precision rarely seen in the genre. This granular control extends to operating tanks, artillery, and even calling in airstrikes, making the battlefield a dynamic and challenging environment where strategic foresight is rewarded. The missions in Men of War: Assault Squad vary widely, ranging from large-scale assaults to stealthy reconnaissance and defensive stands. This variety keeps gameplay fresh and requires players to adapt their strategies accordingly. The game emphasizes the importance of terrain, cover, and line of sight, and players must manage resources such as ammunition and reinforcements carefully. Realistic damage modeling means that terrain destruction and vehicle damage significantly impact tactics, forcing players to constantly assess and react to evolving conditions. This depth ensures that victories feel earned and defeats provide meaningful lessons. One of the standout features of Assault Squad is its multiplayer mode, which offers intense, tactical battles between human players. The multiplayer experience is robust, featuring different game modes such as conquest and domination, where teamwork and coordination become vital. The community, while niche, is dedicated and often highly skilled, providing a challenging and rewarding environment for competitive play. The game's detailed mechanics and wide range of units allow for a broad spectrum of strategies, ensuring that matches are varied and engaging. Visually, Men of War: Assault Squad balances realism with clarity. The battlefield environments are richly detailed, from war-torn villages to dense forests and urban ruins. Unit models are authentic and well-animated, contributing to the immersion. Though the graphics may not compete with modern AAA titles, the focus on tactical visibility—such as clear unit outlines and effective use of the camera—ensures that players can always maintain situational awareness. Sound design is equally effective, with realistic weapon noises, vehicle engines, and ambient battlefield sounds that enhance the tension and atmosphere. While the game excels in depth and realism, it is not without its challenges. The learning curve can be steep for newcomers due to the complex controls and vast array of tactical options. The AI, though generally competent, sometimes struggles with pathfinding and decision-making, which can lead to frustrating moments. Additionally, the single-player campaign may feel somewhat dated in presentation, and some missions may drag due to slower pacing. However, for those willing to invest the time, these issues are outweighed by the rewarding tactical gameplay. In conclusion, Men of War: Assault Squad is a rich and demanding real-time tactics game that delivers an authentic World War II experience with a high degree of tactical complexity and realism. Its focus on squad-level control, varied mission design, and detailed multiplayer battles creates a deep and engaging experience that will appeal to strategy enthusiasts who enjoy thoughtful, methodical combat. Though it may not be the most accessible game for casual players, those who embrace its challenges will find a satisfying and memorable tactical war simulation. Rating: 8/10

Each battle feels like a tiny WW2 documentary that you’re actively screwing up, the kind of chaos where a single sniper behind a bush can change the outcome of an entire frontline. The level of control you get is absurd, the terrain destruction isn’t just visual, it impacts cover and flanking but cooperative missions is where the game really shines.
