The word "perfect," as a scoring term, is not something I like to throw around. Mostly because I don't think anyone actually knows what perfect means. Yet, it is the word that comes to mind after I finished Metal Garden . To be clear, when I say that Metal Garden is perfect, what I mean is that everything the game sets out to do, even if it's limited and potentially not to the degree of quality or depth intended by the creator, is executed to such a high standard that no improvement is needed. That annoys me because I got to the end and all I wanted was more. This is a short, cheap game: one where you explore a linear world, with optional opportunities for exploration almost entirely fueled by a curiosity of your own making. The tangible rewards for doing so are ammo and items that may or may not even be relevant to you depending on the difficulty. The true reward is that by holding off on the way forward, you may gain a slightly deeper insight into how this world works, what exactly it is, and what happened to it. The most apparent and ever-present thing is when you look up and see the massive concrete ceiling hiding behind clouds. It is always there to remind you that you are, in fact, inside a building so massive it defies your ability to understand it: a place where levels don't just mean height but entirely new civilizations and worlds. There is so much to uncover in what little there is to show you, and you'll be making guesses as to what things were and why. And even then, there is only enough to make you more curious. One may look at the graphics and gameplay and wonder if there would be room for improvement. This goes back to my statement about perfection. I would not change the graphics in the slightest. If ever more was made in this game's world, I would only want more biomes in this style, and that's all. It has a muddy, gritty look caked in a light haze of fog. It looks ancient. It looks run-down. It looks like nature has taken its toll. Forgive the tangent, but I'm reminded of Halo and how the remake of Combat Evolved showed off Unreal Engine tech, giving all the Forerunner structures a shiny, pristine look antithetical to the ancient feel they once had. This world, the ruins, the ancient ruins, the ancient ruins inside other ancient ruins, feels like I'm back exploring a Halo again. A time when finding myself in a subtly mysterious world made me yearn to learn more about it. The gameplay is just what it needs to be. There doesn't need to be XP, upgrades, or skill unlocks. You get three guns, a double jump, and a grenade. There are three enemy types: guys that shoot at you, guys that slash at you, and guys that snipe at you. And guess what, that's all the game needs. Combat isn't drawn out. In fact, it could be argued it's underutilized. It doesn't outstay its welcome during the short playthrough. What it does do uniquely is health. Rather than the bar telling you when you're about to die, it tells you when you're about to gain an injury that affects gameplay. Death only comes when you gain four injuries. If there was ever a bigger version of this game, I'd only want lateral expansion, like more guns and enemy variety. There are a lot of games I play where I'm done with them well before I hit the credits, and I just sort of run to the end, begging for the final cutscene. Games I started, thinking were fantastic, only for them steadily to outstay their welcome, dragging on and on. Metal Garden has done the opposite and understayed its welcome, not in a "that was it -_-" disappointed way. I'm staring at my monitor going, "There has to be more. Why isn't there more?" And I can't even complain because I still think everything it did, it did perfectly. So yeah, I do recommend it.

Great, however there's an it's/its typo on the final terminal, so it's basically unplayable /j

A brief fps game focused on atmosphere. Metal Garden has one of the more compelling settings I've seen from a game in recent years. I'm reminded of old Halo titles and even somewhat of Kenshi. The world this game takes place in is ancient and strange, reaching far beyond your character's grasp. This isn't to say that atmosphere is all Metal Garden has to offer though. The gameplay features floaty physics which actually mesh nicely with your character's jump pack. Although the arsenal of weapons at your disposal is small, the shooting is fun too. If you're okay with spending money on small but cerebral experiences, I think this game is a must try.

A few years ago, I fell in love with the BLAME! manga and its depiction of a world so vast it was incomprehensible on a human scale. Out-of-control robot builders had constructed structures engulfing the entire solar system, trapping humanity within. The distances between layers were so insurmountable that no one could ever hope to find an exit. It was a bleak sci-fi story, yet there was so much beauty in it—concrete landscapes stretching hundreds of kilometers, impossible staircases that led nowhere. It captured the same sense of desolation and decay as the Souls games. Metal Garden is a short proof of concept built on that philosophy, and I absolutely love it. The vibes are immaculate. The art direction, the sound effects—they all immerse you in a melancholic mood, as if you're walking through the remains of a long-dead civilization. It feels like searching for a needle in a haystack, cursed to wander endlessly inside a structure that has no concern for your existence, growing into a scale beyond comprehension. The civilizations and fauna you encounter are fleeting companions in your eternal walk toward an exit you may never find. Their mysteries and purposes will remain only partially understood. To the developer: I would gladly buy a full game based on this concept—you’ll have me there on day one. Thank you for working on this project, and for pricing it so fairly. Long live the megastructure!
