Still holds up really well. The story is iconic and Snake and the cast are all memorable. Some of the Master Collection version's technical issues are annoying but the game itself is a classic for a reason.

What are the chances that someone in 2026, playing a game from 1998 for the very first time - a game almost as old as they are - would end up loving it? Especially someone who never owned a PlayStation and didn’t even have the opportunity to play the game until the PC port in 2023. And yet, that’s exactly what happened, I enjoyed this game as if it were completely new. Did I struggle with the terrible PC controls, did the fixed camera angles feel awkward? For the first fifteen minutes - yes. But the game grabbed me quickly. Very quickly. I stopped thinking about how bad the controls felt. I stopped noticing how old the game was. It simply pulled me in. Of course, the “stealth action” aspect mostly exists at the beginning and then appears only a few more times throughout the game. The rest of the experience is essentially moving between boss fights, fighting those bosses, and watching cutscenes. And all of it is genuinely interesting. In some way, this structure may actually help the game age better than if it had simply been “run forward and kill dozens of faceless soldiers.” The focus on set pieces, characters, and cinematic pacing gives it a kind of durability. As for the meta-moments - there really aren’t that many. Most of them revolve around Psycho Mantis. Yes, that sequence was clever and memorable. But outside of that, the game behaves responsibly when it comes to breaking the fourth wall. It doesn’t overdo it. And that balance works very well. Almost immediately after I finished the game, PC ports of MGS4 and Peace Walker were announced. It genuinely felt like they were waiting for me to finally start going through the entire series from the beginning.

To get the Big Boss rank in MGS1 you must complete the game on Extreme difficulty in under 3 hours, with 0 continues, 25 or fewer kills, 4 or fewer alerts, 1 or 0 rations used, and no special items Bandana Stealth. The radar must be turned off, which is a requirement for the rank. You can get Big Boss rank easily by playing the game in Japanese There's only one difficulty setting and it's equal to the easy mode of the US version. Makes it much easier to get Big Boss rank.
