I'm not a nostalgic person. Against all expectations (and my own gripes) I hoped Delta might be good enough so that I wouldn't replay the original anymore since I was keen on the modernizations in the 3DS version... I was wrong. The Master Collection port is mostly up to snuff these days but I highly recommend the very easy to install community fixes... Again, even with the patches (yay) you really must get the community fixes on the nexus. Snake Eater is a must play even if you don't touch the other entries. It has a solid almost timeless story and fun reactive gameplay. What you can do in the in terms of mechanics and movement (bar crouching) is genuinely great. While the button layout is over encumbered and later entries managed the same with less friction or buttons, the game is otherwise quite modern in many other ways. What shows it's age is the level sizes, the menu-ing, and again the button layout ("oh no square to shoot") it's less restrictive compared to other console games of it's era which is one the only reasons you'll even hear a lot of the complaints related to this today. Relative to prior Metal Gear games (even if this one is front loaded and still could be a bit better) it's got a better gameplay and cutscene ratio and has the fewest "ooh that kinda suck I don't know if I want to play it again because of that part" moments. Unlike RE4 where you get two great games with different pros and cons, MGS3 isn't so lucky. Delta (it's remake) has better bindings and control options but the movement feels kind of bad and beyond adding a crouch walk I can't say it does enough to recommend it over this version, especially since the character models and animations look pretty janky and it really hurts the story and it's style. The original goes for realism but has jarring surreal moments where as the remake (rendering aside) attempts for realism but falls QUITE short and kind of fails to do either style justice. Playing this you might go "wow" from time to time despite it being from 2004 where as in Delta you're more likely to wonder why they didn't fix or upgrade parts of it or worse yet think it's not so great since again, we're no longer in 2004. In other words: Snake Eater looks (and functions) pretty good for it's age, Delta already looks kind of scuffed. If that sounds harsh I should mention Delta is kind of like that Oblivion remaster/remake where it's actually the original games HDC/Master Collection port (not rebuilt like say Destroy all Humans) running underneath UE5 and unfortunately it's capped at 60 like the HDC/Master Collection) because it's the literally the PS2 game logic... and unfortunately it doesn't run well either. I wish I had an easier way to recommend the Snake Eater but warts and all this is the world we live in.😅
Mgs 3 is a masterpiece, this game is perfect in every way, even though it's the first chronologically, it looks great, the gameplay and graphics are improved compared to previous games (I'm not saying the graphics of MGS 2 and MGS 1 are bad, but the graphics here in MGS 3 are more polished). The story is the kind that leaves you thinking about your life after seeing the ending; this game is highly recommended. You can really tell when a project has been made with a lot of effort and time. This game, in my opinion, is practically perfect in every way, and for me, it's my number one MGS game. It could easily be among the best games in history. Maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but the game is a marvel. 10/10
