Meteor World Actor: Badge & Dagger takes the familiar framework of a detective visual novel and gives it a distinctive supernatural twist, mixing criminal investigations, political tension, unusual powers, workplace comedy, and personal mysteries. Developed by Heliodor and published by Shiravune, the game continues the story of detective Ruka Hiryu and the troubled Seventh Republic. Rather than relying on action-heavy mechanics, it places nearly all of its weight on dialogue, characterization, atmosphere, and gradually unfolding mysteries. This makes it best suited to players who enjoy spending hours reading through a carefully constructed narrative and learning about an eccentric cast. The Seventh Republic remains an intriguing backdrop for the story. It is a place permanently deprived of sunlight following the devastation of war, creating an appropriately gloomy environment for a supernatural police drama. Crime and corruption are common, while individuals with extraordinary abilities complicate matters further. Ruka works for the National Police Agency's 13th Division, a unit that hardly carries the prestige associated with elite investigators. Its members are regarded as outsiders, and that reputation fits Ruka particularly well. He is lazy, cynical, sarcastic, and often behaves as though police work is an inconvenience rather than a calling. There is considerably more to Ruka than his attitude initially suggests. His ability to manipulate ice makes him exceptionally dangerous, although controlling that power is another matter entirely. More importantly, his past continues to influence his behavior. The unresolved Cult Massacre and the disappearance of his mentor remain important pieces of his personal story, giving the narrative a larger mystery beyond whatever immediate cases confront the 13th Division. The emergence of suspicious activity involving the Shining Union adds another layer to the conspiracy, gradually connecting present events with questions that Ruka has been carrying for years. The supporting characters are a major reason the story stays entertaining despite its heavy emphasis on reading. The cast includes police officers, supernatural beings, forensic personnel, hackers, fighters, elves, and several personalities who seem completely unsuited to conventional detective work. Their abilities can be impressive, but the game frequently focuses just as much on their personal shortcomings, awkward relationships, financial problems, arguments, and strange habits. Even a tiny pixie hiding inside Ruka's coat becomes part of the bizarre everyday routine. These details prevent the characters from feeling like simple collections of supernatural powers. One of the game's strongest qualities is its ability to move between serious crime fiction and comedy. Conversations about murder, conspiracies, trauma, and dangerous organizations can be followed by ridiculous exchanges between coworkers without completely destroying the atmosphere. Ruka's sarcastic personality is particularly useful in this regard. His interactions give the story plenty of humor while also revealing how he avoids confronting certain aspects of himself. Romantic and suggestive elements appear throughout the experience as well, but the broader character relationships and central mysteries remain the more interesting parts of the narrative. Players should understand that this is primarily a visual novel rather than a traditional detective adventure. There is no elaborate crime-scene exploration system, extensive combat, or deep collection of investigative mechanics. Reading dialogue and following the narrative account for most of the experience. Consequently, enjoyment depends heavily on whether the characters and mysteries capture your attention. The pacing can occasionally feel slow because substantial stretches are dedicated to conversations and character development. Those looking for frequent gameplay challenges may find the experience restrictive, while dedicated visual novel fans are much more likely to appreciate its deliberate approach. Presentation helps compensate for the limited mechanical complexity. Character illustrations are expressive and distinctive enough to make the large cast memorable, while the darker environments complement the permanently shadowed setting. The soundtrack contributes significantly to the noir atmosphere, particularly when the story leans into its detective elements. Japanese voice acting further gives conversations personality and helps lengthy dialogue sequences remain engaging. The combination of anime aesthetics, jazz-influenced atmosphere, supernatural fantasy, and hard-boiled detective themes gives the game an identity that separates it from more conventional crime stories. Badge & Dagger is also better approached as a continuation than as an independent introduction to the setting. Returning characters, previous incidents, existing relationships, and unresolved mysteries carry greater emotional weight when the player already understands the earlier story. A newcomer can still appreciate the personalities and basic premise, but certain conversations and revelations will inevitably lose some significance without that background. Players invested in Ruka's previous adventures will naturally get considerably more from the continuation of his personal investigation. Steam Deck compatibility is officially categorized as Playable rather than fully Verified. Performance with the default graphics configuration is considered suitable, and the game can run successfully on SteamOS. However, handheld players should expect compromises. Some functionality is not fully accessible through the default controller configuration, touchscreen interaction or a community controller layout may occasionally be useful, and text entry can require manually opening the virtual keyboard. Some interface text may also appear small, while certain prompts can display keyboard, mouse, or non-Steam Deck controller icons. It is therefore functional on the Deck, but the experience is less seamless than a fully optimized handheld release. Overall, Meteor World Actor: Badge & Dagger succeeds through personality rather than mechanical ambition. Its supernatural noir setting is memorable, Ruka is an entertainingly unconventional detective, and the supporting cast provides enough humor and conflict to keep long conversations interesting. A sequel/interquel to Meteor World Actor, which feels more like an expansion or what I believe to be a "fandisk". It provides some extra adventures/cases to enjoy and the possibility of doing routes for Fuyumi and Ryoko, which have also been enhanced as characters with the addition of new sprites. It's basically more Meteor World Actor, and considering how MWA works, this content could have been in the original game with basically no issues (specially Fuyumi's route). The fact that this isn't in the main game is probably due to MWA being Heliodor's first commercial title, and the associated budget constraints. I'm really glad for the extra content on Fuyumi, since I think she's pretty cool, I like that character archetype. I do not really care for Ryoko sadly, and the other characters do not get a lot of time in the spotlight. That said, I'm still working through Ryoko's route, which is featured as a "chapter 2". Meteor World Actor is sadly not available in Steam, though you can get it in F95 or somewhere like that. Buying this would make no sense for someone who hasn't read the original novel, as it actually does a lot pretty much all the heavy lifting required for you to contextualize what's going on. Also, the events DO happen after what happened in the original game, even though they potentially could have been shuffled inside the original game's timeline. Bit of a rant here. If you liked Meteor World Actor, then this is more of that. I particularly liked it, though I did feel like the romances are a bit shoehorned across the two games. I might be biased towards the archetype of the rugged detective which they tried to portray here, but in this case, he does end up settling down after nabbing a woman, and that goes against that. MWA's epilogue however basically implies that not a single one of the romantic relationships actually happened, and they actually belong in a "different timeline" which feels like a cop out. I can't blame the company for adding this kind of content though, since it's actually a selling point I guess. Anyway, TLDR: It's more Meteor World Actor. You need to have read Meteor World Actor, it's not on Steam. I'll update after finishing Ryoko's route if I feel like it, but otherwise, you might catch me reading the next installment on the series via an edited MTL translation that's out there and that I'll certainly apply to my rightfully and legally acquired copy that I bought on Japan (my uncle works at Heliodor)
