July 2025
I was expecting a mixture of Mario Galaxy and Gravity Rush, and I got that. I wasn't expecting Portal-like puzzle rooms, or how the game turns into a more freeform Hi-Fi Rush whenever you enter combat because of how central the beat is to enemy attack and movement patterns. And yet it doesn't feel like any of those games specifically because of how unique the combination feels. I guess the best way to describe it is that I went in with a certain expectation, then had to repeatedly change that expectation as the different components of the game revealed themselves. This lead to some frustration earlier on, but after a while I realized that I needed to let go of those expectations and meet the game on its own terms. At that point it started to click in place for me what Metro Gravity is trying to do. The game can roughly be divided into four different gameplay loops: 1. Mario Galaxy/Gravity Rush-style platforming. 2. Portal-esque puzzles where you have to apply your avaiable tools within a limited 3D space. 3. Rhythmic battles with enemies like Hi-Fi Rush (the bosses especially are big spectacles with a lot of countering and dodging that has to happen on the beat of the music). If I have one criticism, it's that it is often a bit unclear what you're supposed to do next, but thanks to the map you can usually figure out where to go. Other than that this game is a very unique blend and I strongly recommend checking it out if you're a fan of crazy platforming or big puzzle rooms, with the side note that you also need to enjoy or at the least be able to tolerate rhythmic combat because you will be doing a lot of that.

While obviously a bit rough around the edges, this game is a monumental achievement for a solo dev project. It boggles the mind to think that everything in this game, save for the title screen illustration, was made by a single person. And it's pretty lengthy too! Really hope with time those edges are eventually smoothed out, and I will watch this dev's future endeavors with great interest.

This and Pesuedoregalia made me feel like a little kid playing games again. You've made a wonderful and unique game and I hope you're proud of it. Good job developer.

This is the developer's first (commercial?) project, and you can tell from some rough things here and there, but it is nonetheless an incredibly fun and unique title that is an impressive achievement for a solo project, let alone for a foray into game development. This game has two very different elements to it, which are largely separate. They coexist together without friction, but they also scarcely interact so I want to talk about them separately Gravity-Bending Metroidvania There are a handful of games that play with gravity in one way or another. In select few you can walk on any surface, making the walls and ceiling your new floor. Very, very few take this concept as far as Metro Gravity, where not only can you gravitate to any surface — be it ceiling, tree, or upside-down beach umbrella — the maps are also designed with a complete lack of downwards direction. A floor of one room transitions into wall of another, all oriented in a large and interconnected space. By default the map will only show you the current biome, which helps in you not getting too lost since each biome is relatively small on its own. However, as far as metroidvania maps go, it is on the simpler side. It is hellishly difficulty to make a good 3D map where down can be any direction, so the same things that help you not get lost make the map a bit more streamlined than one might want. There is still routing you can do to go your own way, but the new movement tools you get tend to feel a lot more like keys for particular doors than tools that suddenly open up the map through a bouquet of little shortcuts all over the map. They are generally very useful though. With Rhythm Combat (and bosses) Throughout the world there are enemies scattered about, both small and large. There is a good variety, but aside of ones that you need to defeat to unlock a gate they're inconsequential, with little to no reward for killing them. It's a shame cause the combat could be a lot more expanded and involved. The tools used for metroidvania traversal could be integrated into combat, such as disarming foes with the needle, smashing into them for damage/armor break with the heavy disc, or revealing weakpoints on an otherwise undamageable enemy. A lot of potential to integrate tools from the other half of the game into this one that isn't quite realized. What is very well realized though, is the boss fights. Trying to dish out as many attacks as you can, while parrying the incoming attacks, while avoiding unparryable attacks with dashes and jumps; all to the rhythm? Absolute peak. They're dances of death, but it's up to you who's the grim reaper. They're also the main source of replayability, since the more attacks you want to squeeze in the more score you'll get, but the harder it'll be to execute. And Some Rough Edges Finally, as I mentioned, this is a first-time solo project so it's not without some rougher parts. To start, there are some game design inconsistencies. Sometimes the rhythm combat timing circles appear on the enemy, sometimes on you. Walls of a specific color in the factory are movable by a mechanism, aside of a particular similarly-colored block that you have to move manually. Glass is usually just decoration, aside of the one time when it breaks. None of it is particularly bad, but it does stack up to paint the image of the developer not being seasoned in their craft. Which is perfectly okay, and I'm sure will disappear with future projects/patches. There are some things people might enjoy less. While the music is generally good (though at times feels a bit quiet or completely disappears) the animations are... present. Some of the bigger moving things (e.g. bosses) are a bit jarring or too simple for their size and importance. There are some very cool set pieces and ideas across the bosses, but they can be undermined when the boss turns around by doing a 180 degree model rotation. Generally while the low-poly style is well executed (and warranted!), the animation and boss VFX are the weakest parts of the game In the end, I had a lot of fun with the game. 10h to 100%, a little more if you want all achievements. But most importantly, a unique title if you're looking for something slightly different

Metro Gravity is a game that asks the hard questions. What if they made Gravity Rush 3 and it was good? What if there was a game that understood the ethereal beauty of polygonal graphics and their ability to represent and evoke without being restricted to what they "were"? What if someone made Psuedoregalia but with even bigger thighs? I've only played this for a sliver of time and if all this game had was the half hour I just played followed by the credits I'd say it was going to easily make my top 10 for the year. What an absolute delight.
