I feel a little bad for Koa because it's good game, but the current landscape leads to it feeling underwhelming. If this had came out in 2010 this would be a certified 3D platformer classic. Most of Koa's qualities are good, but none are exceptional. The movement is fluid and engaging but it lacks any advanced techniques or real schmoovement, which is something a game with a focus on speed should consider a priority in my opinion. The levels and settings are fun, but never reach more than one standard deviation from the most normal Mario fare. My biggest criticism of Koa would be that it has a disappointing level of non-levels. A stunning portion of the alternate levels are freebies but they receive no distinction on the menu and you still get equal rewards for completing them, which left me feeling cheated. Unsurprisingly for an island-themed game there are a lot of water levels, which also feel like getting cheated of an opportunity to engage in the platforming engine. Overall I would recommend Koa only to enthusiasts of the 3D platforming genre. If you've burned through all the Mario games, bounced through Pseudoregalia, zoomed through Yellow Taxi and gotten through as much of Hat in Time's DLC as you can then this is a good "another" 3D platformer you will certainly have fun with. If you're not looking to lick the plate of this genre clean though there are more compelling experiences you can enjoy. We live in a glorious 3D platformer renaissance, and only because there are so many excellent games does this good one now feel a little subpar.

Koa is a very competent platformer, a notch above the licensed-movie pablum sold to kids, but definitely not reaching the heights of Nintendo fare. Think of this as a cozy platformer. There’s enough challenge and variety here for this to be engaging for adults, but it’s definitely not difficult for anyone who is used to platformers. Getting the best time on the levels was fun and balances the low difficulty for me. Movement feels great, which also lets me forgive the low difficulty. It’s colorful and vibrant, and the levels are designed well with plenty of variety in gameplay. If you want a palette cleanser between games, this is perfect for an evening or two.

Got this in a bundle from one of their other games I wanted to buy, but this was a fun 7hr to 100% platforming/collectathon game for sure. Runs great on Proton and didn't face any technical issues at all. The negative reviews about simplicity, meh, a few levels took several retries to get gold time-wise, it's never boring though.

I really enjoyed this game, was surprisingly challenging! Getting 100% was fun and easy with practice :)! The only thing I regret is buying the rest of the dev's games because Ive had issues with some of them and the devs were just hostile and rude when I asked for help with it and basically told me that they don't work on the game anymore so if you have issues thats tough luck basically lol which I found pretty gross. Ive read another review on one of their games that they had similar replies from the devs so be careful when buying their games!! I wont be buying any newer ones in the future from them. Thumbs up cause the game is fun. Thumbs down cause the devs are rude.

If I had to limit what I think of this game to one sentence, I would say that it has really, really good level design. Just beating a level is going to be pretty easy most of the time. But beating a level fast is where the fun comes in. Movement is simple: skip, run, jump, roll, and long jump. The secret to going fast is to chain rolls and long jumps together. And the levels felt perfectly designed for going fast. Almost always, platforms were spaced so that I could choose to either use normal jumps or long jumps to progress, and not be forced to do one or the other. If I was brave, I could long jump over pits or onto the scenery for shortcuts. Every moving platform and trap felt perfectly timed so that, if you go fast, you never have to stop and wait. And chaining long jumps to accomplish this felt really fun. Sometimes I would just zip around town, not even challenging a level, just because I was having fun spamming long jumps all over the place. The overall mood is very cheerful in a sort of "wholesome cartoon" kind of way. This mood and Koa's constant happy shouts during gameplay are infectious, and will probably do a great job cheering you up. There are collectibles that will unlock new shirts, backpacks, ship upgrades, and town repairs, so that's an incentive to explore levels and take on additional challenges. Also, I was impressed to see that changing shirts not only affects the 3D character model, but also her 2D artwork. I don't play many 3D platformers, but this became one of my favorites.
