Monaco isn't just one of the best co-op games ever made. This little bastard kicks the door down, steals your wallet, blows up your expectations, and then politely asks if you'd like to play another round. YES. OBVIOUSLY. This is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hallmark of excellence. Original? Absolutely. Beautifully designed? You bet your ass. Good-looking? Hell yes. Well-written? Surprisingly as ♥♥♥♥. Challenging? Enough to make your friends question your ancestry. Playable? Like digital crack. Immersive? So much that you'll forget you're sitting on your ass staring at a screen. This is everything a great game should ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ be. And co-op? OH BOY. Grab some friends and prepare for the most beautifully coordinated ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ imaginable. One guy sneaks in. Another guy screws up. Someone triggers an alarm. Everybody starts running. The entire plan collapses into glorious chaos. And somehow you're all laughing your asses off while desperately trying to escape with your stolen loot. That's Monaco. It's one of the most unique and addictive games of 2013, and the cheeky bastard KNOWS IT. It walks into the room like: "Yeah, I'm ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome. What of it?" And you know what? IT'S RIGHT. There are plenty of games that are fun. There are plenty that are polished. There are plenty that are clever. But every once in a while, some magnificent little bastard comes along and puts all that ♥♥♥♥ together perfectly. Monaco is that bastard. Strong contender for Game of the Year? ♥♥♥♥ contender. This thing deserves to kick the door into the awards ceremony, steal the trophy, and escape through the ventilation shaft while the entire security team is wondering what the hell just happened. Monaco is a class act, a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ masterpiece of co-op chaos, and one of those rare games where you finish a session thinking: "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, that was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ brilliant. When are we playing again?"

Monaco is a funky little obscure indie game that experienced a cult of love in its heyday, even if its sequel crushed that cult in a moment. It's still worth getting, though, given its interesting, aesthetic (and more than anything, fun) take on the top-down 2D stealth heist genre.

I should have played this game sooner, I just never felt the right mood to start this game. And honestly, I liked it. The game is widely considered one of the best cooperative games, although I am mainly a solo player, I still enjoyed the co-op mode. There are 8 characters, each offering different skills and encouraging creative planning and distinct team roles. The game has a good jaunty and piano-heavy soundtrack by Austin Wintory; it is dynamic, shifting from a subtle piano riff during stealth to a frantic instrumental swell when you are spotted. If I had to give 1 complaint about this game, it would be its top-down perspective which can sometimes make it hard to tell if you are properly hidden or standing in plain sight. In high-pressure moments or frantic multiplayer sessions, this visual style often leads to accidental alarms and a breakdown into "trial-and-error" gameplay.
