Monster Jam Steel Titans 2 looks good, runs well enough, and has lots of trucks, events, and secrets to unlock, scattered across 5 huge worlds that will require lots of exploration. You will need to learn how to perform simple stunts and sharper turns. To do all that, you will need some time to adjust to the weird control scheme, which allows you to turn the front and back wheels independently. There are 5 unique teams, each with their own themed trucks. The trucks overall look nice and have a very realistic damage model. You can unlock trucks by hunting for hidden collectibles in the free roam mode and by winning events in the career mode. The exploration aspect reminds me of the good old days of hunting for hidden keys in the Rush series. The game implements an interesting progression system by introducing Experience Points. The more you use a given vehicle, the more its stats will increase. Also, each team has its own skill, like extra boost and such, which can also be upgraded by completing extra challenges. The thing is, you'll barely notice any difference. I've completed the game 100% and never noticed any increase in speed or any change in stats whatsoever. It's a nice system that gives you a sense of progression at first, but when you figure out that nothing actually seems to change, it's a letdown for sure. Of all the available events, the circuit and checkpoint events are by far the most fun. The circuit tracks are actually really good and force you to navigate through rough areas, while the checkpoint ones encourage you to look for shortcuts since there's no restriction on how you'll reach the next checkpoint. The stadium events, like 1x1, stunts, and destruction, are short and fun, but there are so many of them that they start to feel like a chore in the later half of career mode. After you finish the game, you have 10 circuit races and 10 checkpoint races unlocked in the Quick Race menu. Even though they won't reward you with anything new at this point, it's still fun to just play them as an arcade mode. Maybe the game could have shipped with an arcade mode like this unlocked from the start. Performance is overall good. I've experienced a few slowdowns here and there, so optimization could be better, but overall the game looks great and runs smoothly. One letdown is that you don't have too many video options to tweak the game to your setup, with only VSync and resolution options available.
