Did I care so much for a tiny voiceless robot? Yes, I did. Did this tiny robot make me cry without the game using a single word past the halfway point? ...Yes, it did. MotionRec is an incredible piece of art. Nothing was left to chance as everything was deliberately and carefully crafted: from the gorgeous monochrome pixel art to the level design while passing through the delightful soundtrack and brilliant environmental story telling. The gameplay is so simple yet executed so well. Maintain the record button, walk, jump, and play that move again. A simple mechanic with a wealth of uses. On your path will stand fans shooting powerful winds, portals instantly teleporting you to another end, winches that will pull you back, and buttons that must be pressed before yours. Every single element have a purpose and each provide a different challenge each time. In solving those puzzles, you will have several "Eureka!" moments for how creative and beautiful the solutions to each puzzles are. And speaking of the puzzles, nothing is introduced to the player except the two buttons that make the entire game: record, and replay. What you make of those is up to you. There is a lot of trial and error in MotionRec, and your tiny robot will die (then immediately respawn) multiple times until you learn what works and what doesn't. This makes all the beauty of this game. As you make your way through this world, a story draws itself with the pixels of its art. With the impeccable pixel art comes a delightful mystery to unravel. I will not spoil anything in this review, but I urge you to experience this game. There are multiple zones to explore each divided in multiple chapters, and each zone have its own mood. Who knew two colours would be enough to provide such depth to the world? The soundtrack only complements this depth with such beauty. The ambiance shifts as the melodies change and so will your understanding of the world they interpret. From joyful to careful, with a side of despair, the beeps and bits of this chiptune are the perfect companion to the revelation of MotionRec's mysteries. Its main tune will live in my head for a little while now, making me smile about the experience I had playing this game. Despite how short as a game and how simple MotionRec is in its concept, it isn't any less lovely. It is a breath of fresh air, much like what Öoo is, in an era during which purely environmental story telling takes a step back in favour of long winded dialogues explaining everything in excruciating detail. I would much rather piece every detail together in an experience where every of its parts contribute to painting a broader picture, and MotionRec excelled at this. Now, could we get this game ported to GameBoy Advance or Pico-8? I feel like its colour palette and visual style would work wonders on such platforms!

An incredibly charming puzzle platformer that manages to perfectly hit that difficulty sweet spot of not being too easy (to where you lose interest) and not too difficult (to where you end up spending hours stuck in one area). Great music, great 1-bit (technically 2-bit) pixel art, and clever game design! One of my favorite releases this year.

Who would've thought we'd get not one, but TWO genius Japanese-made lo-fi indie platformers centered around a single mechanic in the same year? (The other being Öoo) Well, we just did, and I'm so happy we did. Edit after finishing the game: Yep, it's a small masterpiece. Mandatory playing if you like puzzle games!

MotionRec is an absolutely brilliant puzzle platformer. Dare I say a game of the year contender for the puzzle community cognoscenti. The core concept is that you record your movements and then recall them at will wherever and whenever you would like. The puzzles are quite approachable if you just want to reach the end. And for players who want some extra challenge there are plenty of cleverly hidden collectables along the way. You'll likely miss some hidden puzzles when first playing through a lot of these levels. Even the more straightforward puzzles still impress with consistent inventiveness. The art and music is a beautiful vibe all the way to the end. The sound design, especially use of silence and environmental ambiance, is masterful. For a game so minimalistic in its presentation, I surprisingly often found myself pausing just to soak in the atmosphere. There's a lot of soul here for a game about a robot solving puzzles. MotionRec is a tightly designed lo-fi crunchtacular puzzle platformer masterpiece in the same league as Öoo, Moonleap, Elechead, I Wanna Lockpick, and Magicube (these last two are outliers because of very high difficulty). Massive respect to the developer. I can't wait to see what they work on next.

just beat it in under 7 hours delightful little puzzle platformer, even if it's simplistic, the art style has a lot of soul put into it and i love the amount of work that was put into making the world feel alive, with small details scattered all over the environment. the game is paced very well with simpler palate cleanser puzzles interspersed between more difficult areas, along with a very gentle introduction to new mechanics, and the sound design works really well too despite having no words, i think it did a pretty good job at crafting a little narrative to enjoy alongside the puzzles and i enjoyed the ending the puzzles themselves weren't particularly difficult, nor trivially easy (there was one puzzle i couldn't figure out before going to bed, but i figured it out the day after, that was the hardest one) maybe my only complaints is that the ability to rebind keys would be nice (shift to record, ctrl to playback meant i sometimes got my keys mixed up) and in some of the transitional areas i would sometimes not realize that a certain sprite is an entrance to the next area, though these are minor nitpicks
