One of my favorite games! Pretty simple story, fairly easy to solve puzzles, and a nice soundtrack.

My Big Sister, developed by Stranga and published by GrabTheGames, is a pixel-art horror adventure that blends psychological mystery with an emotional core, offering a story-driven experience that’s equal parts unsettling and heartfelt. At first glance, it might look like a simple indie horror game with retro aesthetics, but what lies beneath its pixelated surface is a dark and surprisingly moving narrative about sibling bonds, personal trauma, and the blurred line between the real and the supernatural. It’s a compact experience, but one that sticks with players who enjoy story-centric adventures with a melancholic tone and emotional complexity. The story centers on Luzia, a quick-witted and sarcastic 12-year-old girl, and her older sister Sombria. After a seemingly normal day, the sisters are abducted and find themselves trapped in a strange world filled with ghosts, curses, and mysterious strangers. As Luzia attempts to protect and reunite with her increasingly distant sister, the game’s layers of mystery begin to unfold. The game touches on sensitive and mature themes—loss, mental illness, isolation, and the desperation to hold on to loved ones. Despite its horror label, My Big Sister is not about jump scares or gore (though some disturbing imagery is present), but rather about an emotional undercurrent that explores what it means to be a sibling and the weight that young people often carry in the face of overwhelming situations. Gameplay in My Big Sister is deliberately simple and accessible. It follows a top-down perspective with point-and-click elements, leaning heavily on exploration, dialogue, and item-based puzzles. Players navigate different environments—creepy bathhouses, hospitals, dreamlike urban settings—collecting key items, unlocking doors, and speaking with eerie characters to piece together clues. There is no combat, and there are no skill-based mechanics. Instead, the focus is on atmosphere and discovery. The puzzles themselves are straightforward, often involving backtracking and using the right item in the right place, which can occasionally become repetitive. However, their simplicity allows the narrative and world-building to take center stage without mechanical distractions. Visually, the game adopts a minimalistic pixel-art style, but it effectively conveys emotion and atmosphere through careful use of lighting, shadow, and environmental design. The characters are simply drawn but expressive, and the environments often feel grimy, haunted, and claustrophobic. The visual tone shifts as the story deepens, mirroring Luzia’s psychological descent and the growing tension between her and Sombria. The soundtrack complements this well, with haunting melodies and ambient sounds that subtly build mood without being overbearing. It’s clear that, despite limited resources, a strong artistic vision guides every scene and location. What gives My Big Sister its emotional strength is its protagonist. Luzia isn’t the typical horror game lead. She’s not a blank slate, nor is she hyper-dramatic. Her personality—blunt, clever, at times insensitive—feels refreshingly human, especially for a child character. Her relationship with Sombria is complicated and touching, built on both love and frustration, which makes the story’s tragic elements more impactful. Through Luzia’s eyes, players experience confusion, helplessness, and quiet determination. The writing, while occasionally rough around the edges or awkward in phrasing, captures the rawness of these emotions effectively. The game asks players to consider how far someone will go to save the people they love, and whether the consequences of those choices are always worth it. Despite its strengths, the game is not without flaws. Some of the later chapters can feel padded with backtracking, and certain puzzles may feel more like filler than genuine brainteasers. The pacing occasionally falters, with emotionally significant moments sometimes happening too abruptly or without enough narrative buildup. Dialogue at times struggles with flow, and while the ending is thematically consistent, its ambiguity may leave some players feeling unsatisfied or confused. Nevertheless, these issues don’t outweigh the impact of the overall experience, especially for players who connect with the characters and the emotionally charged themes. There is also a remastered version of the game released in 2022, which improves many of the original’s shortcomings. The updated visuals, enhanced soundtrack, refined writing, and clearer connections to Stranga’s broader game universe (such as Ashina: The Red Witch) offer a more polished and immersive experience. For newcomers, the remaster is the recommended version, as it retains the emotional weight of the original while smoothing out its rougher edges. My Big Sister is a quietly powerful game that punches well above its weight. It's not flashy, and it doesn't rely on traditional horror tropes or elaborate mechanics. Instead, it offers an intimate, emotionally grounded story about a young girl navigating a world filled with monsters—both literal and metaphorical—to protect someone she loves. While its simplicity and indie nature may not appeal to everyone, those who enjoy character-driven stories, psychological themes, and melancholic horror will likely find something meaningful within its short but memorable runtime. It's the kind of game that lingers in your mind—not because of its scares, but because of its heart. Rating: 9/10

🍜 A good horror that constantly plays with the presentation of characters in the story. You won't know until the end who is right, what is wrong and when you'll find yourself in reality. Despite the general linearity, several small choices really demonstrate a different outcome, especially in the finale. Nice atmosphere, visual and alright general narrative. There aren't many puzzles, and it's good that they don't make you roll your eyes. The only drawback is the imperfection of the tech. part & bugs, which aren't uncommon in the projects of this dev (and for some reason, this isn't fixed over the years). However, this is a small price for a good story.

At first, the game seemed like a strange experience with unusual dialogues, but as I played it, I realized that it was actually a fairly simple game that was interesting in its own way, based on its plot. It wasn't a "wow" experience due to the glitches and story issues, but it was okay and fun to play.

I went in blind and was not expecting it to turn to a fantasy horror-style. I'm actually really glad they did cos I might have had serious nightmares if they'd stuck to the kidnapping or trafficking route or something.
