July 2025
Peak game design and peak enemy mechanics. Similar progression to Deep Rock Galactic and a similar mission structure to DRG and Helldivers; this game is already pretty peak and is shaping up to have a promising early access. Things I love: - The music is full of bangers, especially for a certain boss arena/fight - The 4 environments feel varied and unique - The uniqueness of collecting resources - each one has a different gimmick that is engaging - The upgrade system may be one of the best upgrade systems in this kind of genre to date - The atmosphere, art style and game design just ooze passion and love for the genre of horde shooters - The secrets in this game are amazing and I wish to see more of them - no spoilers! Things I don't like as much: - The RNG stat lines from upgrades have no meaningful 'path to progression'; right now you can scrap and attempt to re-craft the same upgrades but it's pure RNG if you get a meaningful difference or a desired element (maybe have a 'Valence Fusion'-like system from Warframe where if you get dupes you can slowly upgrade your desired perk, or use scrap to do so) - Leg attacks often feel poorly telegraphed - No mute audio on focus loss (please please please add this) - The grind for XP past level 6 seems kinda excessive (at least for weapons) - there are some weapons that didn't click until I got proper upgrades and slogged through until level 6 with them. [Jul 19 EDIT: this has been updated slightly, XP past level ~5 or so is a bit easier to acquire. Good change.] My biggest criticisms right now for Early Access are the following: - Poor matchmaking experience (frequently fails to join or frequently shows full lobbies as not full, lack of dedicated weekly matchmaking, filters could be better (consider adding a 'refresh' button would help, or auto-refresh every 15-30 seconds) [Jul 15 EDIT: the weekly missions are actually available via matchmaking/'join crew' option, I just didn't see any lobbies at the time] [Jul 19 EDIT: slight improvement to join crew added: will now keep difficulty filter active, making it easier for the user to re-search for lobbies slightly. Still hope for further improvements here] - Odd networking delay/desync issues occasionally (i.e. enemy hit detection, enemy warping, carrying 'heavy' objects feels vastly different as a host vs. a client) - Enemy spawns basically boil down to them 'teleporting' to you if you run far off, making long range support builds feel underwhelming at times (and combined with the networking point above, some leg attacks can be poorly telegraphed). This also happens to allies: enemy batches will quickly accelerate to long distance allies. Some of my criticisms might feel heavy handed, but I promise you this game is worth your time if you enjoy Deep Rock Galactic, Helldivers or most other horde shooters. Beneath the trippy looking visuals and odd name this is a game that is just a blast to play. For this dev team's first game, I think they knocked it out the park.

This game feels like playing Deep Rock + Roboquest + a pinch of Risk of Rain 2, but you're tripping on mushrooms while doing it.

Risk of Rain + Deep Rock Galactic with Borderlands movement done in the best way possible. This game is amazing! The music, art, and gameplay are fantastic and not enough praise could be thrown this games way. 10/10
