Visually the game doesn't look bad, especially for it's day. It runs on Unreal Engine 3 and there are enough lens flares to impress Hideo Kojima. Unbalanced enemies are antithetical to it being run 'n' gun shooter inspired by classic FPS games, turning it more into a shoot 'n' retreat. It only resembles a run 'n' gun shooter when there are select perks equipped, which are unlocked gradually by building up points throughout the game; only three perks can be equipped. Restricted to only two interchangeable weapons also dampers it being a retro-inspired shooter. Humor pulls heavily from innuendos and not much else. Boss fights take place in large arenas with minimal cover. Bosses either border on being unfair, comically easy or completely broken, with the latter playing into the hands of the other two. Has possibly one of the worst on-rails segments in an FPS game due to the aforementioned unbalanced enemies. There's the sanctioned mech suit segment. Your mech reticle does not align with your spent munitions and is useless. The MC looks like a rejected Unreal Tournament character. Bloody screen, so real! Alien Rage tries placating to two different types of FPS fans: those that cherish the classic run 'n' gun formula of old and those that favor a more tactical solution in overcoming the odds. The perk system weighs heavily with the style of game you choose to play, but due to the unbalanced enemies on the medium difficulty, "hard", you're corralled into a more modern style of play, requiring retreats and bottlenecks to kill enemies at. This goes without mentioning the growing number of glitches and bugs encountered near the end of the game, which clearly lacked the polish of the first half. If you're an old school FPS fan, on you're initial playthrough you'll likely have a better time on "challenge" mode. "Hard" mode can only be appreciated more when you unlocked perks, with select perks making it feel more in tune with classic shooters. But is it a good game? I would answer yes. When the stars align, it is a good and fun shooter, but the prerequisites to obtain your definition of "fun" and may come at the cost of frustration and patience.
If you enjoy classic, no-nonsense FPS games, Alien Rage – Unlimited is worth checking out. Alien Rage – Unlimited is a straightforward old-school shooter that knows exactly what it wants to be: lots of guns, lots of aliens, and lots of explosions. The shooting is reasonably satisfying, and the game has some nice weapon variety. There's no complicated progression system or huge open world—just run through levels, shoot aliens, collect weapons, and keep moving. The combat can be genuinely enjoyable, especially when you're experimenting with the different weapons. It's not a masterpiece, but it delivers some uncomplicated shooting fun. I wouldn't call it terrible, but there's little here that I'd strongly recommend. Enjoy :)
